So this ended up being so long that I broke it down into two parts, the first one is the set up and getting rolling with 12 and the 2024 RAM 3500 HD Cummins. We will walk through the set up, cameras, squat or sag, lights and initial driving. This is part 2, where we tow and my thoughts at the end.
Will the 2024 RAM with the Cummnins beat the Ford Super duty with the 7.3 godzilla or the 2024 Chevrolet Silverado HD 2500 with 6.6 L8T gasser with Allision Transmisssion?
Gas vs. Diesel. Let’s roll

The steering is lighter feeling to help the stiff suspension. Just bought a 24' Ram HO and i tested two different trucks before purchase. My dad has a 22' and he says you get used to the light steering and it become easier to drive

Yes, Dually will make the big differences. HO 6.7 4.1 is great but the mpg sucks. Get 3.74 gear over 4.1. For my HO 6.7 4.1 gets about 15 mpg driving empty with little payloads

The chevy is independent front suspension, the ford and ram both use solid front axle. I bet that plays a big part in how well the chevy handles (but off course offroad it will suffer if offroading is your thing). I'd put better tires on the ram and then use timbrens, that might help some. Low MPG is surprising.

the timbrens would help , and the firestone tires are soft that is why they dont have much stability

@AutoMotive Inquiries, I mostly tow in the same terrain you did this test run (AZ, NM, CO, UT) and I also tow at 60-65 mph. Having had a 3500 SO 6.7 /68RFE and now HO/Aisin. Locking out 6th at that speed gets the RPM's in a better range (1700-1800), improves fuel economy and helps avoid such a large swing in mph in the rolling hills. Though the Ram cruise control allows for larger swings than some others. Try it out next time, you will notice an improvement.

Crazy your gauge cluster is different than my ‘24 but the same as my ‘22. Suggestion, I added bump stops on my truck as I haul a skidsteer often. That made a huge improvement for the ride comfort!

Nice review. You mentioned two things that I have always said about trucks that hardly anyone else ever mentions. And that’s all engines have to rev near their peak horsepower to accelerate on a grade AND a short wheelbase is hurting you for towing. That’s part of the reason I think the Rams are last place for towing stability. And honestly they are only marginally better than a 1500 if they are a 2500 with coil springs. A question I would have is when you mention the mirrors not needing to be extended. I remember you saying this about the Chevy too. My question is what if you’re towing something that’s 8.5’ wide? Now maybe your campers are 8.5’ but I know most of the time they are 8’. My enclosed car trailer is 8.5’ wide and I feel with my Chevy extending the mirrors help. Last thing is the market is shifting to the gas engines for private use. I think it’s 100% due to reliability issues with modern diesels. I know me personally I would have ordered my 2022 with the Duramax if not for that. And like you say the new gassers are light years ahead of what they were not that long ago.

Excellent review! All your points are dead on…especially the wobbly ride and stability. Ram just can’t get that right for whatever reason. The frame or body on frame and or suspension is just wonky. Chevy/GMC and even Fords are superior over Ram when pulling. Yes the Cummins is great, but that is just 1 part of the towing package. You need stability. Great video.

I think you got it backwards. Go and visit locations like oil field and heavy pulling sites even people who does hot shot for a living. Majority of the trucks used are Fords and Rams. Chevy/Gmc's softy suspensions will not last long thus Ford and Ram used solid axles compare to GM products plus the electrical problems. GMC/Chevy are good if you don't put it to heavy work. Ford and Ram is made for heavy pulling. Just traded my 2017 Ford F350 diesel with 125,000 miles to my new 2023 Ram 3500 high output diesel and it pulls my 20k loaded 43 feet toy hauler 5th wheel without much sweat up in down the Nevada Desert. I live fulltime on the road and I have 6 plus years in the rv living lifetyle. I go chasing sunsets and sunrise in my rigs are put to the maximum test.

@@j.l.salayao8055 lol….Maybe Ford. But Rams are pure garbage…I have owned 3 …3500…I have grown up in the farming industry. Chevy/GMC do just fine pulling heavy. Replace ball joints about every 100k and keep going. Ram has the weakest frames in the industry….the absolute junk ass transmissions. Yea…I don’t have anything backwards. I speak from Experience

For me, my new 2023 ram 3500 dually diesel with 4:10 axle ratio came with the air ride has a smooth ride or better unladen than my previous 2017 Ford f350 srw diesel. Liking the air ride also for hitching my rv trailer makes it smooth operation as a full-time rv dweller that constantly move to different locations.

Your 3500 like mine has 3.73 gears in the rears. Gas engines dont last as long and no exhaust brake. Was it a fuel leak? My 2021 has the 370 horse power . Your tires are 11.22 wide . All trucks have there good points and bad points . I put bilstine shocks on and the handling is awesome . My ram is 3500 single rear wheel . In the ram trucks you have to put the rear tires at 80 psi and front tires at 65 psi to keep the ram in tune . I have checked different tire pressures on my 3500 ram and to keep it in tune rear tires 80 psi fronts 65psi anything less you will get the handling that you had at 70 psi .driving ram cummins for 35 years .

Hey on your GM truck did you ever have a issue with the electric parking brake. I disconnected my battery due to the truck sitting a long period of time came back a few weeks later reconnected it and started the truck now I have all these codes saying parking brake needs to be serviced and now truck is stuck in 2WD with a message saying service 4x4 system kinda irritated considering all this came from disconnecting the battery now I gotta drop the truck off at a dealer to have it sit for who knows how long until they hand the keys to some kid that’s gonna take it for a rip around the block before pulling it into the shop 🤦‍♂️

Your videos are very helpful. Thanks for doing this. I have a brand new RAM 2500 Diesel and I am pulling a 9000lb, 34Ft, Travel trailer, I feel the truck like floating in highways over 60mph. I won’t say is sway but i don’t feel the truck planted as i was expecting in a 2500. I am not happy at all with the handling, and driving over 60mph is not pleasant. Based on your videos I am considering to trade in to a gas Chevy or ford gas too. What is your advice?

I appreciate your feedback. Some may say it's the tires, if that is the case you could swap them out but it would be a few grand. I feel that it's proportioning, I think the truck is just not up to snuff. The chevy gasser, kong, was the most sure footed truck of the three. The ford was better than the dodge, bit the washy feeling you seem to be having is what I'm getting, on the 2500, mine is a 3500 and that didn't seem to matter. I have a video coming up tomorrow about the bed weakness and the leak I have on the transfer case at less than 1k miles. I also agree at 60 mph and above the truck makes my hair stand up with how unsure footed it is. The ford can suffer from the death wobble, and I didn't feel it was half as bad as the ram.....the gm truck in 2500 felt tight driving and when towing, it felt even better. I don't think that tires, or timbrens will help the ram. Me personally, I'll be trading the ram sooner than I thought. To me all the power is useless without control. Im glad to have had the ford and chevy recently and to try the ram, but I'd go gm truck, gas or diesel over the ford. That being said the ford f250 with timbrens was way better than the ram, just not as good as the chevy.

I have an update for you. I just trade my new RAM 2500 Diesel to a Chevy 2500 gas. Thanks to you I went all in and trade my RAM with 2000 miles. I could not stand with the way it tows, not planted at all, no confidence towing. I could not live with a $80k truck not able to full fill her purpose. Shame on RAM that made me waste time and money. After a couple hundred of miles, not towing yet, I can tell how much more planted is Chevy. So far so good! Keep you posted. By the way, I end up to recup almost $10k on the trade. I love cash and have a truck that does what is made to do. Thanks to you!

You think those Firestones made a difference in the floaty lack of road grip? I just bought a 24 Ram 2500 Cummins. The firestones on it are pretty aggressive AT tires and don’t feel stable on the highway. Also the acceleration on the standard output Cummins really disappointed me pulling. My 19 F350 Powerstroke Dually completely blew this thing out of the water. I mean like night and day.

Absolutely, the Firestone are not a very wide tire compared to what chevy and ford put on their trucks, and the rubber is soft. On the other hand the nexen tires I had on my 16 ram dually we very stable. The 24 ram I felt was not as stable as any of my previous 15 ram diesels, not sure whymat they changed. And as for grunt off the line, the 24 ram did feel the slowest I've ever had. It would stink to have to swap out the tires on a new truck (although the Firestones usually wear out in about 35k if one tows a lot) . Tibmrens also did help some but the truck is so floaty anyway.

Ok. Looking for updated opinion. I have a 6.7 Cummins ram on order, however I keep getting nagging feeling that I should go Chevy/gmc with L8T instead. Trailer I pull is 9700 GVWR and 1150 tongue weight. In past I always disliked towing experience in a gasser just because of gear hunting and I felt like the reving (RPM’s) was going to detonate the engine. Can the towing and everyday experience of the L8T with 10 speed tranny be acceptable? To be honest your posts have been the only one to say it is a good option to tow with, but with your background I have to believe you’re not just an armchair QB. Help! My wife just wants me to stop nagging her and just make a decision. 😂😂 Btw..in the Rockies so most of my experience will be mountain driving

I appreciate you watching and being here and checking out the videos. I understand the dilemma. I feel that my 2016 was way more planted. Only 1100 miles in, the output shaft on my RAM is leaking. The bed tie downs which has always been a knock on RAM were bowing the other day just strapping down a snow blower. After towing with it, and being a 3500, I'm really at a loss as the control is sloppy. Niether the Ford or Chevy were like that at all, prior to the Timbrens. After the Timbrens, it got even better. RAM is a great looking truck, most think it's better looking than the Chevy for sure. The inside fit in finish is excellent, and I like almost everything about it. That being said, If I hadn't got the 18k off, no way in light years, would I be happy with it at 89k. I feel that it's not good enough for the money. The Cummins is superb in my opinion, and has the best exhaust brake ever. The 68RFE has never let me down, and out of 2 Aisins, I've had one fail. I typically have Cummins engines in all my Commercial trucks I've driven so that will never be RAMS achilles. And I went way out on a limb last year buying my first personal Gas HD Ford 7.3 since my RAM V-10s and my V10 I had in my Class A. Then to add more to the channel, I put it all on the line buying the 6.6 L8T. No sponsers, no help, and going deep in debt. My intent was to put the gas debate to rest, one to prove can they do it or not. The Ford Blew up and I lost my but on selling that back to Ford. The Chevy, not the most powerful, not the biggest, and new with the 10 spd allison. I will say that the Allison in essense is the exact transmission that the diesel gets, sure they make a few small changes to make it work with the Gas, but it is the best transmission on the market. I've never had a single Allsion go out and I've had a half dozen and Allison makes them for tanks, and smaller Commercial motor Vehicles. With going in like this, I had to work these engines hard and quick. I racked up as many miles as I could and trying to be genuine to my watchers, not these guys that get trucks from dealers to run up a hill for a minute. The Chevy gasser was exceptional in every way. Yes it works at the higher range of RPMS when it needs it and it will have it's limitations over 18k, but up to 18k, I take this engine every day over any other gas and over diesel. One because it's easy to idle, no def, no regens, less on maintenance and frankly, it's funner to drive when not towing. Fuel economy, yes, will not be as good as a cummins, but diesel is a dollar more than gas, so it would take about 100k miles just in fuel to make that arguement. Kong, crushed everything I towed. The transmission did exceptional in control and at the end of the day, the Chevy has more control period. If I was buying a truck today, gas or diesel, I'd do a chevy or GMC period. I'm already shopping my 24 RAM as a trade, because 18 mpg is not going to be it's saving grace. Besides some of the things above, the Chevy crew and Ford crew cabs are the best in size and are light years ahead of the RAM. The new GM interiors are excellent. GM beds are the biggest no matter if you go short or long. The bed tie downs are exceptional and don't bow. And the bed steps, and bumper steps are priceless. I have been in the auto industry for a long long time. I've always been a RAM guy, because of pride, and that's what I liked. But I have alwasy been objective and see that the Ford and Chevy are better I've driven 4 million miles just in semi tractors. In personal vehicles, lord only knows. If I was ordering or buying a truck for towing, it wouldn't be a RAM unless it was a dually and I don't want any more duallys. If I just needed a pickup to tow a small boat, haul some lumber, all three do that. As for towing, it's GM gas or diesel. Hope that helps. Definately post back, would love to see what you get and what you think.

@@automotiveinquiries9673 I finally had an opportunity to get behind the wheel of a gasser with the L8T and 10 speed Allison. My experience with the sales staff was interesting at best. Most of them (chevy and gmc dealerships) were pushing the duramax 6.6...but after much prodding I found that NONE of the sales staff had any experience with the 2024 HD trucks with a L8T and 10 speed Allison combo. They only had knowledge of the older 6 speed tranny. Still find it odd that a sales person doesn't know enough about the product they are hawking. Oh well, follow the money right? I was able to test drive a GMC 2500 HD PRO. Pretty basic and certainly nothing fancy. Keeping in mind, all the areas you spoke of, I would agree whole heartedly that: 1. Transmission is buttery smooth 2. the 6.6 L8T was much quicker than anticipated and RPM's were shockingly low on the highway (non towing of course) 3. The Cab interior was pretty quiet. They must put a lot of insulation/sound dampening material in there as even at high speeds, there was very little wind noise and conversations didn't require me raising my voice for passenger to hear me. Even though my test drive didn't allow for towing, I have to imagine that the L8T would have plenty of oomph to tow what I have. Since the cab is so quiet, it also nullifies my anxiety with hearing the engine RPM's being much higher (than a diesel) while towing up 17 to Flagstaff or up in the rockies. Thanks your input and sharing your experiences. Keep up the reviews and also the "How To's" I am a firm believer in learning from other peoples wins/losses. Hope your channel keeps gaining momentum.

RAMs programming for applying power in cruise control is frustrating and numb. They must be worried about fuel efficiency and emissions. GM and FORD are much more aggressive in their cruise control programming. The speed only drops 1 or 2 mph and its kicking down to the next gear when in tow haul mode.
