The 2024 Sacramento Cyclocross Series presented by Performance Bicycle headed to Johnson Springview Park in Rocklin for the final race of the season. Originally scheduled for Saturday December 14th, the race was postponed to Sunday due to Saturday's severe storm with up to 50mph winds. The storm left plenty of water and mud for racers to enjoy, all under Sunday's sunny skies and calm winds.
In the men's race, Michael Machado (Coureur Monterey Bay) already had the series championship secured going into the weekend, while the rest of the overall podium was up for grabs. Absent for the weekend was series podium contender Ryan Rinn (Radhaus Racing) who suffered a separated shoulder which needed surgery the week of the finale. But by the end of the day his points would hold him in 2nd overall.
Timmy Bauer (Above & Beyond Cancer) took to the front early, needing to beat Michael Dietrich in order to secure 3rd overall for the series. Dietrich got cross-rutted in an early mud-pit and went down, but stayed in contact with the leaders. By the end of the lap, Machado and Jeremy Ferguson (Enjoy Cycling) got around Bauer and started to stretch out the group. And by the end of lap two it was clear the race for the win was between those two.
While Ferguson and Machado see-sawed well off the front, Bauer would lose contact with Dietrich and Travis Wold (Huck Racing) by lap three as they battled for third place. Wold looked very comfortable in the muddy conditions and would stretch small gaps in the slippery spots that Dietrich would have to recapture. But lap after lap that began to take it's toll and the two would be separated by over 30 seconds by the end of the seven lap race.
Out front Machado would attack on lap five, getting a gap on going into lap six where Ferguson would have a catastrophic rear tire blowout that would end his race. This would leave Machado alone out front and able to cruise in with the win, but he kept up his pace for the remaining two laps finishing over three minutes ahead of second place finisher Travis Wold.
In the women's race, Julie Young (Julie Young Training) would take to the front early and looked comfortable putting down the power on this generally flat course. By the end of lap one she would be alone with a 15 second lead over the next challenger Caetie Ofiesh (Ornot) who was looking strong in her second race of the day. Lindsay Wetzel Polin (Team Feral Catz) rode in contact with Ofiesh just a few seconds back until lap three where Polin struggled and the gap extended to twenty seconds. The top three ladies would continue to ride separate but consistent laps remaining unchallenged all the way to the end of their six lap race.
