I am also a Suzuki fan, but just as (and as I commented back then as well) with your last Swift mild hybrid review (I think it was, at least) I am unconvinced the hybrid system does all that much above single digit mph speeds except satisfy legislators. 2.3kw added power really is "literally nothing". On the flip side, 7kg added weight is even less, so all in all I would rather have it, than go without. But as mild hybrids go, it really is as "mild" as drinking a stiff glass of demineralized, room temperature water. Enthusiastic marketing aside, it really seems like a very nice and sensible car that probably wont put its name to shame.

Mild hybrids are just the car industry trying to keep petrol cars with advantages without a heavy battery, it's a good con as they know governments just care as long as it says hybrid on the back

I agree it’s a mild-mild-mild hybrid but at the end of the day what matters is the economy and this beats almost everything else with fancier Hybrid systems. The new MG3 - great example, but electric motor, bigger battery, heavier in every respect, no better economy.

I almost bought one in about 1994. It was the Swift GTi. Great little car, drove like an Austin mini without the reliability issues. Don't know why I didn't buy it as it would have been a great choice for me at that stage. Dependable, fun, economical to run. I considered a Swift again in 2017 but ended up with a Vitara - I wanted the extra space and the 1.2 4-cylinder engine fitted to the Allgrip swifts wasn't very nice. @@michaelarchangel1163 it is purely fuel driven. A mild hybrid like this is pretty simple with an ISG and small battery pack. No turbo and a manual gearbox. I have noticed that the recent Swifts use 0 W 16 very thin engine oil. Some people say that such thin oil will cause excessive engine wear. A friend of mine has a Hyundai Sonata Hybrid, when a cell of lithium battery or complete battery went bad it causes all kinds of issues. The Hyundai uses the same type belt driven starter/alternator. The lithium battery issue, when the battery goes bad, can't drive the car with the gas engine only, it strands you and will have to be towed to a garage. Suzuki quit the US market, they had very minimal sales. No dealer network. I read one article in US news that even banks wouldn't loan money to buy new ones when Suzuki announced they wouldn't stay in the US.

At least this time we get proper rear door handles. But a couple of big issues that put me off. One, beep beep beep. I completely agree with Matt. I won’t be buying a 24 year car unless there is a way to switch off the ‘safety’ systems with one button. There is a manufacturer that does this, which I’ve have forgotten. (MG, Renault, Dacia?) I don't think it's "all-new", I think it's the mid-cycle refresh using the same basic bodyshell as the old model. Just with new door skins (they also moved the rear handle down from the window to the body) as well as new front and rear treatments, in typical Japanese facelift style -- the tactic Japanese brands developed to give the impression of new product every 5 years, even though it's really still a 10 year product cycle. 🙂 I think a close inspection of the A-pillar and roofline between old and "all new" models confirms this, if I'm not mistaken. There is certainly a fleet of new (less powerful?) lower emissions engines. Folks in Australia are sad about the loss of the high emitting Swift Sport variant, as well as complaining about the other engines now making less power in preparation for Euro 7 compliance.

Drove one yesterday - really great to drive. The only thing I can’t quite warm to is that bonnet line. It makes the front look structurally weak - like the front end would drop off in a crash. It’s a very odd styling choice I have to say. In some colours, the panel gap screams at you. The other elephant in the room is the price. £19-21-5k … for the same money you can have a Polo, Fabia, Corsa etc. or the entire range of Citycars and a load of Dacia models. You’d have to really want the Swift to pay that price. On the unique plus side - you can have it with AWD which in parts of the UK is certainly an advantage.
