Trailhunter Tacoma looks great! Will be getting a 2026 4Runner Trailhunter. Waiting until the 2nd year. Have a 2014 4Runner Trail. It has an OME lift 33" Mickey Thompson Baja Boss A/T's and typical mods. We are not in a huge hurry. Still, not happy with all the delays...

Yeah having that screen is great for maps. I honestly thought it would be obnoxious for anything other than off-roading, but that screen size feels mandatory now that we have gotten used to it. You don't have to squint to read text or to try to find the next gas station.

When truck f.exed and tires were in full droop it did not droop as much as I would want especially with the sway bar disconnected. @TacoRancher
@TacoRancher Ай бұрын
@@Jay-me7gw I mean - I’m not sure I understand - no they don’t normalize for wheelbase if that’s what you’re asking. It’s just that a shorter wheelbase has an inherent advantage because the suspension does not need to flex as much to keep all four wheels on the ground-just from a physics perspective and mathematically. The Trailhunter outperforms the raptor, bison, etc. which are more apples to apples than a landcruiser or 4Runner with shorter wheelbases. A jeep wrangler and an FJ will outperform a Tacoma off-road just because of geometry.

any suspension mods done to the Trailhunter? how much gear in lbs? how is rear squat with the rtt? good to go with factory coils? thanks in advance
@IndependenceOverland
@IndependenceOverland 2 ай бұрын
No on mods as of the time of filming this. Not sure on weight. With my full sized spare, water, tent, rack I would guess I’m around 500lbs. Rear squats pretty bad, it was noticeable. Since this trip I threw some airlift coil airbags in to get me through the year. I had them laying around for my Fj cruiser and they fit, so 5psi of air pressure brought the height back up. Toyota definitely should have given the Trailhunter a stiffer spring.

17” +35mm offset. For a 35, specifically on the Trailhunter since it has the wider fender flares, it makes the tires sit perfectly under the fenders. I wanted my fenders to actually work and not throw rocks everywhere.

Instead of purchasing and fitting ARB’s old main emu suspension, why not get a custom wear spring pack built as I know there’s at least one US based spring manufacture that could do them for you to get the extra weight capacity without getting extra height. What’s up with your air compressor not working?? Curious since I’m taking delivery of one of these soon and want to anticipate any possible maintenance hiccups with that. Thx 🙏 Also great to see that 17s clear the brakes just fine!! Are those a +25 or +35 offset on there?
@IndependenceOverland
@IndependenceOverland 2 ай бұрын
Air compressor suddenly started inflated and deflating at the same time. Basically, a valve is stuck open. I’m about to take it in for the warranty work in about an hour. I’m sure they will just order a whole new unit which may take time. I went with a +35 to get the tire in as far as possible. It’s a perfect offset to make a 35 work with the fenders. I didn’t want any tire poking out, as these trucks are almost too wide now anyway, and I didn’t giant fenders on my truck that were no longer functional.

@@IndependenceOverland oof I hope that’s an easy fix on your end/doesn’t take too long! I know parts availability has been slim for the 2024s for some repairs. Do you think it’s maybe from dirt getting in there and it getting stuck open? Copy that on the +35. I don’t want any poke either for the same reasons. These things are (I think) about the same size as my uncle’s old f150 crew cab from the 90s which is wild.

We considered it. The new wheelbase on the 4th Gen talked me out of it, and I still went back and fourth on that decision. Now that I have owned the 5ft model, the extra length of a 6ft would have made navigating the Arkansas trails a nightmare. These new trucks have a pretty bad turning radius. Compared to my Fj is feels like a school bus. I am doing something to gain more space out of the 5foot bed soon though, so for me I was able to justify it. Sorry I’m not much help.
@deucebigs9860
@deucebigs9860 2 ай бұрын
Once you go long bed you can't go back. I've got a third gen and would only get a long bed fourth. You can sleep in the back easily and if you decide to build it up you still have more room than a short bed, and it's not like navigating one is that much worse than a short bed. It's never stopped me on trails. I'm also more for overlanding than rock crawling.
@Jareddonvito
@Jareddonvito Ай бұрын
@independenceOverland I just got mine on Sunday night, in black with a short bed. You were right, I drove the LB and it would be way harder on a trail, not to mention parking lots. I love the SB, and I'm getting a trailer if anything huge needs to be transported. The whole purpose of this truck for me is off-roading, so it's got to do that well first and the SB is the best option for that.

The load capacity sucks compared to what they advertised. What rear springs are you looking at/suspension modification? I was also looking at replacing the rock sliders. They look pretty minimal. They're 82". Cbi offers them with kickouts, the ability to stand on them to get to your racks and are 87" long offering more protection. Thoughts? I still roll my window down and look at my tire as I roll through out of habit. As you go up still like we did this weekend, and can see your 3” from the edge of a cliff though it’s quite handy. And also, we had to go attempt to help someone in the dark and had to drive through some sketchy stuff, and the cameras even helped at night with the light bar on.
