This is the problem with us, the electorate. We don’t know that a democracy can succeed only if there is a strong opposition. A little knowledge of History will show that without an opposition and without free speech democracies fall into electoral dictatorships. Hitler is the biggest example and nearer home Pakistan is another example. My biggest fear is that Modi is taking India the Pakistani way. How? One, by trying to make religion our only identity. We all know that Pakistan was born out of Islam. Jinnah, who was not so much a Believer in his daily life, used Islam as a tool for creating the state of Pakistan, forgetting that Islam in the subcontinent developed on a base which had multiple religions and cultures particularly Hinduism. Similarly, Modi and his followers want to make India a state of the Hindus only. This Pakistan-isation of the Republic of India/Bharatvarsha is one thing that I cannot support. Second, the state of Pakistan hated the Hindu minority who slowly left the country.Similarly in Modi-Yogi’s India Muslims are targeted on every count, even bulldozed now and then. I have met some random Muslims who do not feel safe in India anymore. But these were the Muslims who chose to stay on in India in 1947 because this has been their Motherland. I do not like India to emulate Pakistan- the names of the religions are different but the ways adopted by the ruling power in India is the same. Hindus and Muslims have lived together for centuries and there has been a constant give and take between the two cultures. Indian Govt. has to understand this and stop following the Pakistan model.
