Coming from a guy with a couple Turbo cars. Hopefully this Taco with have bigger intercooler products, downpipes, Cold Air Intakes, Blow Off Valves, and Oil catch cans. Very important especially if people are going to run 35-37s and slap on tons a weight. That Turbo needs to breathe better & cool down better. I hope some company is reading this to help out this new 4th gen and make some serious dough in the process.

My Jeep JL Rubicon has the i4 turbo and its fantastic on 37s. If there are issues, Toyota will make the changes for Tacoma owners. Toyota uses the i4 turbo in their Euro Land Cruiser (Australia) and its matching V8 performance (towing, etc) in stock configurations.

I wouldn’t be surprised if the Aussie 2.4T is different to this American version. I say that because the U.S Highlander also has the new 2.4T, but apparently the Tacoma 2.4T engine only shares like half of the parts amongst those two. The Taco uses a different block and turbo, basically Toyota built it to handle way more abuse. Time will tell….

This is what I thought would happen the first time I heard 4-cylinder and a turbo. This engine is going to be toast, IF your an overlander. The turbo will go first though. If you keep it stock and drive it like a car, it will be fine. We all in this community have spent 6 years maxing out our 1ft, 2nd, and 3rd gen Tacos. And as I look at this guy's rig this thing is probably 1000 pounds lighter than my 2018 3rd gen on 37s with an off-road camper on the back and all the bells and whistles that go along with off-roading an overlanding. When it came to buying a 24. I wanted to wait to see how this engine holds up against the worst we overlanders can through at these trucks. These over weighted rigs are about to face there first real test. and that is a summer wheeling in Utha, Arizona, New Mexico, California, And Texas. If this thing is overheating in the snow. what the hell is it going to do in 100 pulse temps of the West and South of America. I give it 2 years before we start really hearing about these truck's engine giving up where 1, 2, and 3 gens breezed through. We are asking for more from engine built to do less. You can through all the turbos you want on these things. All that does is shortens their lives. Remember It's not about year 1, or year 2. Its about year 5 and beyond. Because I'm Still running my old 2nd gen on 40's for rock crawling and its siting at over 200K.

It’s very common for transmissions to overheat while off-roading, the 3rd gen’s do it and probably other generation. You can’t tell unless you have a gauge connected to your OBD2. My buddies 3rd gen (37s, 5.29 gears, supercharger) gets hot, mine is easier to manage.

Really it just shows Toyota's ignorance. They know how people build up these trucks and they should have put the 3.4L from the Tundra in it. The engine has 40% more displacement and 2 extra cylinders and would be under far less stress. Definitely a nice build! What if you upgraded the radiator to a CSF and added a secondary cooler for the transmission? Also, with the added weight and larger tires, a regear might help a lot. You've added so much stress to the drivetrain with the nearly 400 lbs. of unsprung weight, greater diameter tires and a turbo. A regear would really help to manage those stresses much better. You'd probably realize better MPG as well.

Reduction is torque due to the increased tire size makes the engine work harder since it depends on the turbo. Im curious if a Re-Gear would allow the drive train to operate more efficiently. Everyone on the Facebooks got all offended when I said this motor was going to be overstressed with big ass tires and all the racks and bumpers and stuff tacked on. In order to make the power/torque that it makes, it needs to be in boost. This truck is as heavy as a current F150/Silverado and with 35's and all the other crap, the 2.4L is having to move a lot of mass and tons of aerodrag, so its going to be deep in boost all the time. We already saw this with people setting up their 2.3L Rangers for overlanding. They were getting F250 V8 gas mileage. And I am not hating on turbo gas motors, I owned a 2014 F150 3.5L Ecoboost for 9 years and loved it. But my 6400 lb empty F150 Ecoboost on 35's got better MPG than this. It had 45% more displacement and so even moving that mass and large tires it was far less stressed.

If you want an X runner build, then the 4th gen is for you. 😅 I bet forums will be like this next year. WATCH! "You have the wrong build for that truck," "Why are you doing that to a 4th gen?

What Toyota should of done is a dual 4 cylinder turbo... the extra motor could have been used to expend on all that heat and toque into zen fruition. Like I said before, no hate here just what's obvious. The 4 banger (cylinder) the turbo is gonna have expediently more pressure with less dissipation causing increase heat on engine wear.

Ford has been manufacturing Turbo 4 cylinders for quite some time now, and Toyota is actually one of the last to implement the Turbo 4 Cyl in their Mid-Size truck offering. So they are definitely not inovating. Played it "safe" for a while i'd say. The NISSAN Frontier, on the other hand, is one of the last pickups to sport a naturally aspirated engine. The VQ38 is solid, and mated to a buttery and bulletproof 9 spd Auto. Drivetrain-wise, I'd go with the Nissan Frontier. But hey, it's not all about that. Tough choice here between the Taco and the Frontier. Maybe throw a more efficient radiator, oil cooler for the AT, and bigger HEAT EXCHANGER for the Turbo and we have a winner.

Toyota's reliability was built off using old tech, detuned slow engines, and testing everything so thoroughly before release. Now that they are trying to compete with modern vehicles, they are having the same issues. This was seen through the tech updates and electrical issues in the last gen and now again with all of their new trucks. Tuning will probably help the overheating by keeping it in a lower gear. Might be a good idea to install an external cooler if there isn't already one for the trans fluid. Thank you for being a pioneer on a new platform!

PERHAPS you will enjoy some boost at some time, but not for long continuous use. the battery is drained and energy has to be diverted to charge it (or is left discharged). at that point, you have an ICE engine with heavy hybrid components along for the ride. or worse, charging steals energy when you need it. every conversion, and even storage of energy causes losses. i can't believe people think you get extra power by adding a hybrid system.
