In this video, I give an update on the rear differential issue my Tundra has been having as well as the "fix" Toyota performed. Has the issue been remedied? Does it now have more problems? Should I trade in the truck? Tune in to find out, and feel free to chime in or ask questions in the comment section. As always, thanks for stopping by!

This may help or maybe not. We had the same issue with the harmonic hum between 60 and 70 MPH. We don't have a Toyota, it was on a Jeep Grand Cherokee. The dealer was clueless as to the "root cause" and just wanted to keep throwing (my) money at the problem. We declined and took the vehicle to a driveshaft specialist shop. They test drove it, documented the harmonic hum and said it was the "out of balance" drive shaft. It was removed, put on a computerized lathe type of balancer, located where weights are to be attached (just like your wheel rims), attached the weights, reinstalled the driveshaft, test drove it and guess what ... no more harmonic hum. Check your driveshaft for out of balance with a specialist. You can thank us later. Good Luck. Cheers.

I was in a very bad accident in November in which both my legs were broken. Spent 3 months in a wheelchair, finally walked in March. Back to work last week. I’m 35 and I have never ever bought a new vehicle but after that I figured it was time to get something nice and safe. I absolutely fell in love with the Tundra and picked up a 24 Limited Nightshade in Magnetic Gray in March. For weeks I watched YT videos and was super encouraged. I’m 1600 miles in with no issues, but as of about 2 weeks ago YT is now pushing all the videos of numerous issues people are having and it’s putting a slight pit in my stomach. If this thing gives me issues after everything it took to get to where I’m at, I’m gonna be pretty sad. That said, I appreciate you being honest and from what I can see very objective about the issues. I’m sorry it’s happening to you and I hope they make it right and you don’t have to worry about it ever again.

I would also echo an earlier comment that it is the driveshaft that needs to be taken to a shop that specializes in this fix. What you described, a hum at a specific speed exactly is the symptom of a driveshaft out of balance! I know exactly how frustrating this is for you and also how satisfying it is to get this resolved after spending all kinds of time to investigate, diagnose, and finally have a smooth quiet drivetrain! Good luck and forget about another rear differential replacement.

With the plug-and-play turbo kit hitting the market for the 5.7, there is almost zero reason to buy the newer tundras. Not to mention a real backrow

As an early adopter of the 3rd gen Tacoma, and now the 3rd gen tundra, its really clear that the first 3 to even 4 years of the new gens are almost a beta test. It always seems like people report these issues very early on and it takes a Toyota a long time to address them. Both my 2017 Taco, and 2023 Tundra seem to be good both platforms I've had little issues but a bunch of annoying things that seem to get fixed later. I think I'm done with buying the first 3 years and waiting for the mid cycles if sticking with Toyota. Your experiences seems to be consistent with others, not all of them are bad, but the trucks that are bad are REALLY bad. My 2023 Platinum interior and windows are pretty solid but you shouldn't have to fork out tons of extra money for a properly assembled interior.

Well, they found metal shavings in the diff oil the first time, and after their discussion with Toyota corporate, they replaced the diff. So, independent of the diffs potentially being characteristically noisy, they're also defective.

My 2021 4Runner had that hum, I changed the diff fluid out to redline oil and Archoil 9100 additive. It fixed my hum right up. I’m at 75k miles, no hum, no drone. My wife’s 2020 rear diff did NOT have the hum. Just my new 2021 4Runner.

I had a 2018 tacoma trd offroad 4x4. It was a turd. Electrical problems...reoccurring coil issue that would put truck in limp mode. Radio and navigation worked intermittently. Cruise saw on 80% of vehicles ahead. A buzzards shadow could set it off. Multiple fuel pumps...1 recalled pump, then more after that. The dealershit was extremely unhelpfull and arrogant. Nope. Never another toyota of any kind. Mazda has some association with totota. Don't think i will be buying from them either.

I would bet money that the drive shaft is out of balance. I have seen this on several different manufactures new vehicles over the years. Have them rebalance or replace the drive shaft. If that does not fix the issue, lemon law it or trade it and move on. Toyota seems to be having great difficulty producing a quality trouble free experience with the 3rd gen Tundra.

At about 3:03 you mentioned expected depreciation….. if Toyota did this right it wouldn’t be the case to the degree implied (not being confrontational btw, just explaining from my perspective). My $36,000 2018 4Runner TRD OR is nothing short of an investment with a silly amount of equity- I was offered $41,700 during an oil change @ Toyota with 77,000 miles on her. Toyota is simply dropping the ball and we must remain skeptical as the reliability reports and inflated prices are screaming to run from newer models. For the record I’ve owned 3 Toyota vehicles including Scion, Lexus, and my 4 Runner… I’m 42 years old for reference of ownership. Pretty easy to figure out why my “body count” of ownership is so low. I LOVE Toyota but man I don’t like them right now.

@@ZetaDogProductions thank you homie ❤️ keep us all updated. I/ we hate that you’re going through all of this bc Toyota as a brand is known for reliability and doing right by its customers. There are a ton of reviews that are padding these newer vehicles all while we’re beyond the 1st year production “glitches.” Kinda BS considering the price in my opinion. Again- I thank you sincerely for your transparency 🙌🏻

All Toyota trucks have noisy diffs. When you feather the pedal 50+ mph. Tacomas, 4runners, and tundra. Theres been no reports of them failing because of the noise. Supposedly, it’s a harmonics issue because of the vibration. I wish i knew that before buying my gen 3 tacoma. I have confidence the powertrain is reliable but its annoying af. I do believe the new turbos aren’t reliable at all. It makes me sick the fan boys that hype up those dogshit brand.

I have seen so many videos concerning the major problems with the 3rd gen tundra, that I thank the Good Lord above almost every day that I didn't wait and got a 2021 Tundra V8 while I was still able to in 2021. 62829 miles as of today and not a darn thing has happened other than grins from that TRD dual Exhaust.

Mind boggling that Toyota quality has collapsed. When they were all from Japan they were bulletproof. The more cars and trucks that moved stateside the greater the number of problems. Been to Japan. The commitment to excellence is ingrained in the business culture. They are now producing close to 1 million vehicles per year in the US but almost 3 million per year in Japan. Wonder which ones have issues?
