Even though balloon competition is not a speed race there is still a large speed component to the competition. Typically the earlier the pilots take off in the morning the more consistent the winds will be to navigate the balloon where they intend to go. As the morning goes the winds can become more unpredictable making it harder to go where the pilot wants to go.
