I had one of these years ago. It was in that fantastic Kawasaki burnt orange color. It was a really fun little bike, I must say. The only con was RR crossings and torn-up pavement. That skinny 21" front wheel with that geometry was harsh. But you just learn to ride it differently in those situations. After watching this video, I really wish Kawasaki would bring back the Mean Streak. I had one of those as well. I have had over 40 motorcycles, and the Mean Streak is probably the number one bike I wish I still had today.

I have the intake and the injectors a good cleaning, new set of tires and all new fluids. 16k miles and the motor hums quietly. It could use better gearing especially on the highway. I plan to get the ECU flashed this winter and do a few other cosmetic modifications. For $3k with a new $950.00 mustang seat and new set of cobra pipes added by the previous owner it was a great value.

I own a 2007 Vulcan 900 and it is unchanged from the ones they sell today, except mine has more chrome. I've owned mine since 2009 and it's been mostly trouble free. The instrument cluster fades out if you leave it outside. I had to swap out mine for that reason. Also, it could use a 6th gear or a lower 5th gear ratio for freeway cruising.

This is a really old design. Manufactures are moving away from V-twins because they are expensive to build and impose limitations on design. Parallel twins are cheaper and a lot easier to work with. The traditional Harley look isn’t selling well these days. It mainly appeals to the baby boomer generation. I am always surprised to see that 900 is still being sold. It hasn’t been changed in any meaningful way since 2006, so I doubt that any changes will be made before it is dropped altogether. But it evidently still sells well enough, so who knows?

@clydeosterhout1221Ай бұрын
I’ve ridden both, and I own a Classic LT. The similarities and differences are about what you’d expect. Same engine, same power, same suspension, same seat height, same weight (the KT is a bit heavier due to the accessories). The handling is slightly different due to the tall and skinny front tire on the custom. The seat on the LT is better, but it still benefits from an upgrade when touring. The big windshield on the LT catches the wind but it’s easy to get used to. The LT has spoked wheels which doesn’t really make sense on a touring bike, but the downside is look “Classic”. Neither bike is fast, but they are fast enough. Power is plenty enough for two up touring with the bags and rear rack loaded up. It will run 80+ mph all day. Both bikes are fast enough, and will accelerate faster than most cars, but don’t try drag racing other bikes. The engine puts out 50 hp, which is plenty for its designed function but it’s no drag racer. It’s a nice average bike. Kind of a motorcycle Toyota Corolla. Reliable but not exceptional.

The Kawasaki Vulcan 900, the Suzuki C50, and the Honda Shadow Aero/Phantom 750 are all gorgeous, fun, and absolutely bulletproof cruisers, and for a fraction of the cost of a Harley or Indian. Yes, they may be a little down on power vs. some of the Harleys, and yes, the Harleys are usually dripping with newer tech, but who cares? They're all plenty quick for cruising, and honestly, who wants all that other crap on a cruiser? I think Harley has priced itself out of the market, and now the Japanese brands (and Royal Enfield with the Super Meteor650, Classic 650, and Shotgun 650) are going to eat their lunch by selling well-made, actually affordable alternatives.

@ it’s have regular maintenance (I’ve owned it since 2012) and I just put on another new set of tires. It rides great around town and on short “road trips” but I’m always searching for a 6th gear and I believe the engine is working too hard at today’s common highway speeds. Now that I live at a higher altitude, the engine’s weaknesses (only having moderate power and low torque) are amplified.

Unfortunately all these metric cruisers suffer the same issues: They never get updates and they depreciate like falling rocks from new. So, buying used makes sense. The Vulcan 900, Shadow 750 (got a rear disc and ABS last year) and Boulevard C50 all still have 5 speed transmissions. They also only make 45-55hp while being over 500lbs. But yeah they’re super reliable, are cheap to maintain, and can do huge miles without an engine rebuild.

I had a 2011 900 custom for my 1st bike. Bought it back in 2014. Great bike, but sold it after less than 1 yr due to the 5 speed transmission and it not being that great for long trips on TX highways. It could do the speed, but at 85 on the highway it was buzzy like a chainsaw. I'll say I think it had at least 70 hp after exhaust and tune which it had before I bought it. It was powerful enough for two up riding no problem. I sold it and got a 2011 vulcan voyager 1700 that I've happily kept since 2015.
@rehsa-zc6zqАй бұрын
The vulcan 900s and 1700s series all need to be updated. I wish the 1700s would become 1800s and come standard with LED lights and an updated infotainment system. The 900 needs a 6th gear, new dash, and maybe a factory touring half fairing. Similar to the lowrider ST or the Indian equivalent.

When Harley stopped making the sportster the remaining Japanese cruiser bikes fell upward.

That bike would probably go 100k miles with basic maintenance. Harleys breaks down on the way home from the dealership.

It’ll go far more than 100,000 miles if well maintained.

Why a 900 and no dual rotors and calipers on it? Dont understand a 900 should have 2. But definitely the headlight being the "custom" the headlight should have been better an LED setup. Led turn signals. Led break light. More custom stuff
@RayBowdenRidesАй бұрын
Those add on would look great!!
@clydeosterhout1221Ай бұрын
I thought the same thing, but it doesn’t really need one. The rear brake works well. Even with my LT loaded up for touring the brakes are “good enough”.
@LedosGarageАй бұрын
@clydeosterhout1221 i understand but you've got 650 bikes with dual brakes up front this isn't a 250 its a 903cc it should have dual rotors and calipers up front in my opinion. It also looks cool lol

I would get this before an iron 883
@edwardkeeter7622 ай бұрын
The Vulcan 900 and the Iron 883 are apples and oranges. Yes, they're similar in terms of pricing displacement, and they're both "entry level" classic cruisers, but the 900 is a bigger, heavier, more laid-back kind of cruiser while the 883 is more of a hooligan cruiser. The 883 has tons more character...I'd argue too much character for longer rides. The 900 is a great GADA (Go Anywhere, Do Anything) bike. The 883 is a really fun 2nd bike, but not a primary ride.

Funny statement, been building and selling motorcycles since 1981. Never needed after market parts. You Soy Boy types are so helpless. But at least you ride.

Get real..For looks, sound and feel doesn't make a pimple on a Harley's rear...Mechanically very good bikes but still looks and sounds Japanese..No resale..Let's face it they tried to copy Harley cruisers..Sorry...Even though Harley went woke...If you want a reliable cruiser with the pop pop sound of Japanese buy one of these and you can't go wrong..

Harley is not capable of engineering a motorcycle of this caliber. Since they went woke their is no hope for them.
