Yayyyy the goals videos are starting!! Whether people are inspired/motivated by goals or not, I find the yearly introspection about motivation and where I'm currently at mentally for each language to be a really fun process, regardless of whether or not I actually achieve the goals. It's nice to have that yearly evidence of what I was working towards/focusing on, or areas where I'm not making progress lol

Yes! I totally agree, it's a nice benchmark and refocusing time even if life evolves in a way where the goals don't really make sense anymore

Good luck with all your goals! Reading so many books in foreign languages sounds like a proper challenge! But I like the idea of reading half of your books in your main language. I might think about doing something like that next year, but this year I also want to focus on reading bigger books and classics in English and my native language. Looking forward so seeing how you'll do!

Mandarin sounds like a good switch up from the other languages!

I'm thinking of my 2025 goals and just as Spanish is your focus language, French is mine. My main goal for French is just to output more (speaking and writing) like you. I already speak often due to work but I want to practice speaking in ways that I don't get to in work and also write more (journalling or even writing essays for fun). Taking a test would be great but I'm hesitant to set that as a goal mostly because I don't want to feel like I have to use "leveled" materials/textbooks lol Good luck with Mandarin if you do end up starting it!!

The language I most want to be proficient in is Russian so I definitely consider spending more time studying it a goal. I would also love to find time to study Mandarin and French!

If you haven't checked out Lazy Chinese you really should. Her beginner stuff is something you can watch without looking up pretty much anything! It would give you a good base.

Maybe just focus on Spanish books? A year has 52 weeks, so this would be just a single book in Spanish per week.

I'll share a goals video but I want Arabic and Italian at B1 (I've already talked about those goals)

I suppose you may want to consult on it with a Spanish tutor but before reaching the level B2 in Spanish, especially in the year in which you think of passing the exam in Spanish mixing it with learning Portugese at the same time increases the risk of intense language interference. Especially during writing and speaking. So better option is mixing Spanish with not closely related foreign language, preferably from a completely different linguistic family such as German. Myself, I love the sound of Portugese but on purpose do not try to learn it yet before I reach C2 in my Spanish and a decent C1 in my Italian. Otherwise, I'm pretty sure risk of intereference would increase. And once it starts it's hard to overcome. And I know it first hand from my early life since being Polish I was born abroad and my first Slavic language was Russian and it's closely related to Polish that I had to learn during primary school once my family got back to Poland and it really was hard to switch back and forth between so closely related languages. So to anyone working on closely related languages I would suggest- do not try it before you master one of them to at least a decent B2 level but best wait till one of them becomes C1 level.

thanks for the thoughtful comment. I am definitely primarily focused on Spanish, but I’ve also been learning solely Spanish for years now. I will not be intensively studying any other languages before the exam (and likely not even after)

Systems work for me. Goals don’t.
@joreneelanguages
@joreneelanguages Ай бұрын
@@daveg3409 I pretty much just view goals as a lagging indicator of a “system” - if my “system” for reading regularly is failing, I won’t be on target for the goal and can reassess my system, etc. But sometimes I find goals motivational and sometimes I don’t.

I think it's important to have both to have a sense of direction. Otherwise, people would be studying the same things rather than getting well-rounded knowledge. I check my gaps and then make goals to improve in the areas I'm weak in.

For Mandarin, I'd really recommend Migaku. Has tech to look up words quickly and courses to teach all the basics with built-in SRS.
