WHAT IS HIGH GRADE STONE?
Anything you can run a 1/2" flake on with a pressure flaker.
HEAT TREATING:
Heat treat a few FLAKES of everything you got except HIGH GRADE Raw Stone, Obsidian, Dacite, Basalt, Hornstone, Sonora, Fort Payne, or Rhyolite. Start with flakes and spalls less than 1" thick for 200°F for 24 hours to dry it out. Then raise the temp to 275°F and hold for 4 hours. Let cool down for 12 hours. Chip and compare. If no difference, put back I at 200°F for 1/2 hour, then raise to 275 for 1/2 hour, then raise to 325 for 4 hours.
Let cool down for 12 hours. Chip and compare. If no difference, put back in at 200°F for 1/2 hour, then raise to 275 for 1/2 hour, then raise to 325 for 1/2 hour, the raise to 375 for 4 hours.
Repeat with temp going up 50°F until you reach 600°F or nice chippable stone. Whichever comes first. If no good result, or things blow up, let us know.

I really enjoyed this video! It's been 31 years since I've flint knapped. I've used Novaculite once and wasn't really crazy about it but I'm not sure if it was heat treated and back in those days I really didn't know about heat treating. Indiana horn stone was fun to work with but my favorite was dacite. Thanks for sharing! Really brings back some good memories and kinda makes me want to start again.

You raise a very good point, it’s taken you 15 years or so to be comfortable making spectacular points/knives/scrapers. What if you had started at the age of 8 or 10 as the Palaeolithic humanoids probably did. Although they would only produce what was necessary not aesthetic.

Lots of Kirk points too. 800F for three days does the trick. I've knapped a few pounds of that stuff and it can be tough as raw chert even after heat treated. You got a good piece even if an odd shape. Novaculite (any color) makes the best gunflints I have ever used, bar none.

It's very dull and grainy in the raw state. And it doesn't knap well when raw. But yes, sometimes you can tell by the glossy look.

Gotta a boo boo on you fumb Jack. Man i cut my pinky to the bone on some of that Blue you sent me. I got the turtle back off the spall perfectly but i didnt have a glove on and you know the rest. 😂 couldn't play guitar for a month. For me thats a hard thing not to do. Ive played just about everyday since 1994. I was 12 and my aunt cut down her pretty nails 💅 and showed me my 1st few chords and i never gave it up.

@KnapperJackCrafty I mean, is the act of flint knapping harder or easier to do with material the same hardness as the material you are wanting to knap?
@magicturtles9582
@magicturtles9582 12 күн бұрын
@KnapperJackCrafty do you need to use that hand tool, or can you use the same type of knapping material(or stone that is a bit more shock absorbent but still knappable) or is it bet to use a solid stone like granite, or can I use say obsidian to knap obsidian, or is that really difficult to achieve the desired result
@KnapperJackCrafty
@KnapperJackCrafty 11 күн бұрын
@magicturtles9582 It's difficult to knap with a stone or glass "hammer". It can be done, but you must experiment to find a "good" stone hammer. The best material is copper, but other metals can be used: antler, bone, horn, shell, and very hard wood.
@KnapperJackCrafty
@KnapperJackCrafty 11 күн бұрын
@magicturtles9582 You can knap with a tool that is either a softer or harder material than the stone you are knapping. In general, the tool you are using must not be able to chip or break as easily as the stone you are knapping.

Have you considered using a dental pick to "flick" out flakes that haven't left the building? I cringe a bit every time you use your fingernails to dislodge a flake off the piece.
