@@BruceNitroxpro Hi Bruce. Interesting question. Let me say this. Paul is a master at what he does. The guy is a genius. His thought process and teachings are far superior than any I have ever seen. Even though I think we both have unique thought processes on how we do things and achieve the goals needed to repair a unit, I am far from his league of expertise. Why I do not even try to or imitate his style.I have much respect for him and three other creators as they are responsible for my success. Since I am self taught in electronics I use a laid back simple approach to what ever I am working on. So to really answer your question I think we both do the repair in the same manner just the delivery is different. Paul is highly educated, I am just an old farm boy. Thanks

I'm in the process of watching every single FT-101 video you have. Priceless knowledge and I agree on the labour factor as well by learning how to do it yourself. For years i used nothing more than the inbuilt calibrator in my TS-520S or FT-101E, the power meter and a dummy load. Maybe a second receiver if I needed it and a cheap volt meter. In the process of getting better gear now. Thanks for all of these 101 videos :)

Great FT-101E radio repair. These radios just keep working and working if a little TLC is used. The plug in boards make repairs easy and lots of parts around from unrepairable units. Tubes are still available but costly. These are my favourite transceiver and I have 3 of them. Thanks Buddy for working on this old classic radio and I am sure there are many hams out there that still use them.

You are remembering correctly my friend. That is just what it does. The switch in this radio is fairly easy to disassemble. But you can only do a few times before the little fingers break off. Part of radio maintenance is keep them clean so you do not have to go into that far. Yes folks do not understand that restoring a radio can out weigh the value quickly. Most of the time I do not do "rants" but felt like it needed to be said. Thanks as always Frank. 73

@@624radicalham Agreed. Second most rig ever used on 11 meters was the 101. The fist was the Swan 1011. Not to be confused with the Siltronix 1011C. That was just a cb. Many 101's were sold and used by the 11 meter operators during the 70's mostly because ssb folks cared about how they sounded on air. Then came the 80's.....

If there's a single transciver that belongs om the list of greatest HF's ever the 101 series, might be number 1. If not definitely in the top 3. Besides the long warmup period before it stops drifting (which most transcivers of this period suffer) I can't think of anything else that the rig suffers from. When all is dialed in correctly they're not only superb sounding SSB performers but it's AM audio is awsom! I'm assuming an online search can substantiate how many were produced and sold (millions?) There are so many still on the airwaves and sell in almost any condition. There's an eBay seller who specifically refurbishes and sells them. Parts are easily found as there's many parts 101's for sale. Then there's those who specifically buy them in order to part them out. These 101's might be on the air for another 100 years. No matter how small and highly advanced HF's become there will always be those who don't mind having to spend 5 minutes tunning them up in order to get them on air. Truly a peice of HF history that's still highly sought after. And those buying them aren't doing so in order to put them in a cabinet so that they (the 101) can be admired behind a peice of glass. If you're not one who needs DSP ect ect technology the 101 is imo a spectacular amateur radio. Yeasu hit the nail on the head when they got it right. I've read there were bugs in the earliest ones off the line. But those bugs were quickly worked out. And as they say: the rest is history. Great clip. Great repair. On possibly the greatest HF ever to come out of Japan (or anywhere for that matter.) Keep up the excellent work. And sharing. Thank you, 73's PS. The 101's receive is also on point. I will always stop in order to listen to a qso when one or even better both stations are using one of the 101 transcivers.

Great video! This has helped me understand more about the FT-101. I recently was gifted a FT-101E from a fellow ham and I plan to restore it. It was last used in 97 and was working then. I will watch your 101 playlist to see what I can pickup. But I thought I would ask you, do you know of a reliable source to get a power cord for an FT-101E? I see some on Ebay but have had people warn me on the QRZ forums not to buy them from Ebay. Also, do you suggest I look for anything specific before I try to power it on? Someone told me to use a variac and raise the voltage in stages over and hour or so to condition the electrolytics since it hasn't been powered on in over 20 years. This is my first rig with tubes in it, so I know to be careful, and it creeps me out, but they're such beautiful radios an should be on the air. Any tips or advice is welcome. :-)

When you neutralize a tube, do you mean the capacitor shorts out the transmit tube so it doesn't oscillate when you're in receive mode?
@vhfgamer
@vhfgamer 5 жыл бұрын
Capacitors block DC voltages and pass AC voltages. So if you wanted an amplifier circuit to not have stray AC voltages bouncing around then you typically have a capacitor to ground. I don't know tubes, but if this was a transistor amplifier then the capacitor I speak of would be attached from emitter to ground. Also you would have such filter capacitors between two stages of amplification so the DC voltages don't back feed and blow up your transistor. Correct me if I'm wrong Buddy! I'm young and still learning.
@russellhltn1396
@russellhltn1396 5 жыл бұрын
All tubes have some stray capacitance between elements. That can couple the input to the output in a way that can cause the tube to oscillate. Neutralization is about canceling the effects of that stray capacitance.

I was curious to see if you have done much work on Galaxy radios. I just bought a dx99v and have noticed intermittently the frequency will drop to around 24MHz and turning knobs will make it change back to the correct freq. I have seen mention of some kind of bias setting or neutralization or something on high power amplifiers with the Tx tubes out, but it seems like maybe they substituted something for the tubes temporarily. I would guess maybe a high voltage power resistor and capacitor(s) to simulate the Tx tubes to allow adjustments without risking the big tubes but this is just a guess. Do you have any hints on what this process might be? Sorry for such an unclear question but the people who do it seem to keep it as some kind of secret.

@@TheRadioShop *_Does that mean the wire cut makes or stops it from working on 11 meters? I had a FI-101E in 1975. I have a FT-450D now. I loved that old girl. Sorry I sold it!_*

You know what would be amazing? If someone made a video of using the cold neutralization method using just a second receiver, and actually DID it while they were making the video the same way you just did it with a scope!! Not EVERYBODY owns a scope. And...the cold process DOES work with an external receiver. It just seems like everyone is scared to make a video of it. Funny how it seems that all the most handy things you may need, though they may be unconventional, can't be found on KZbin. Hmmmm....interesting.

At work I handle a lot of parts for inspection. Most of these are soaked with hydraulic fluid. Even with gloves the sharp castings cut through them. Plus I handle lots of cardboard. Also very dry skin. No when I am home and not in the electronics shop I am in the garage. Just this past week pulled a tranny from a Ford Explorer and tore down a engine from a 1947 Minneapolis Molene tractor. Gojo makes a lot of money from me. I have been seeing a dermatologist but lets face it, I work for a living lol. .

*_I'll bet it has something to do with 11 meter operation. Early FT-101Es had that 11 meter slot as this one does._*

I wonder if you would consider checking my 101 ... Like you have done to this one ... and making such payment arrangements to your satisfaction, and communication arrangements over the phone ... Mine is in similar good condition ... It does work, and transmits ... What ever needs working on, I would like it fixed ... Your consideration would greatly be appreciated ... rgkulig@gmail.com ...To arrange over the phone communication ... Thanks ... Perhaps you could make another video working on mine ...

I owned an FT-101EX and an FT-101D and I was not impressed with either.I see them as very overrated and overpriced.You could not give me any of them.High maintenance radios as well.

We can say that about any radio on the market. In fact it has been said. The biggest problems with the 101 series is a lot of these were screwdrivered to death by free banders.
