I have had several rotaries starting in 1974 with the RX2; i overhauled that one because of faulty o-rings, and did research with Jay Storer (Peterson publications) into bridge porting; supercharging; anti-reversionary extraction exhaust headers, locked hardened stationary gears, injection and internal relieving techniques for running up 14,000 rpms. Ran a bug eye sprite in gymkhanas with a rotary.... never had to shift! Small the size and weight they make great aircraft and power plants.

Hehehe, this video is nice. At 1:49 you can see the guys reaction change from " Hey look it's a AE86, lets race him" into a "WTF OMG!!!" in a instant.
@adiomang15 жыл бұрын
the rotary engine burns oil by design, unlike piston engines that burn oil as they wear out. the oil lubricates the apex seals and eccentric shaft. The rotary engine is just as reliable as a piston engine though. When a person says a rotary engine is not reliable they dont know what they're talking about, they modded their car improperly or didn't take care of their engine. It's a high maintenance engine but it's worth the time and effort.

@muythaibxr14 жыл бұрын
The rotary engine doesn't have heads or head seals. It has apex seals and side seals. If the engine is taken care of those seals will last just fine. Also, the smoke is not from the oil, they don't burn that much; the smoke is from running really rich on boost, which is often done on turbo engines to keep combustion temperatures down.
@shazmybot15 жыл бұрын
Rotary engines have a very smooth torque curve, meaning its power band extends through the entire RPM range. This makes the power to weight ratio exponentially better than a 4AGE. In terms of weight, a 2-rotor engine falls around the same weights as most I4 motors, while the 3-rotor 20b weights slightly more for obvious reasons.

Actually the righteous airbrushed volcano painting doesn't really add any horsepower; but most people think it adds like 100 to 200 horsepower.... The erupting volcano implies unlimited power under the hood, so most people point and stay out of my way...Except chicks, they are totally drawn to it. The mountain mural on the side is cool too, but it was made for a van. Chicks like to sit in my Vette and play with my C.B. radio. They never seen one before.

P.S. LordJessieD, I'd be willing to bet you're right on the LHD conversion being neccesitated by or helping with the 3 rotor installation.

I'm in Australia. Here it is usually quite hard to revert from injection to carb and be legal due to the loss in emissions control. With the way fuel price's are here most would be considered nuts (no offense) to do away with the injection, & N20 is illegal on the street here. Yes it can be hard to tune, mainly due to the necessary timing & fueling changes, but with injection it is far easier to do acurately AND reliably. I would strongly suggest investing in an a/market ecu, injectors & pump.

You are correct about the size. The 13b (2 rotor) is approx 1.3 Liters, and the 20b (3 rotor) is approx 2.0 Liters. But, the size of the compression chamber is not the only factor in HP.

Have you seen the 1j and 2j swaps done into an fc the results are noooice. Still love my rotor but if I were to get pistons again I would have this conversion but more from a torque, reliabilty, and strength point of view. My current engine cost me 5500 in the end. If Id known it was going to go that high (fucked rotor housings from previous owner) I would have gone the conversion. Love the 1 & 2js but love my rotor too.

Lol guys they do drive on the right hand side, it's not the angle. The white sprinter has the steering on the left side as that is the only way to fit a 20B into an ae86, the steering column apparently gets in the way.

True. I've heard of people reverse-importing older Japanese cars from the US back into Japan for years. Although it's usually rare collector's cars that are now harder to find in Japan such as early Datsuns, Celicas, and early rotary cars like the RX-3 and R100...

But it looks like he is a big a USracing fan cuz he is wearing an NHRA shirt, and I've read a mag with closer specs on the car and he has American stuff on it like a Fram oil filter, Sunpro gauges and Simpson racing accessories , but still its on badass ride it's the Japanese version of a Pinto with a blown 347stroker!!haha that would be a cool match.

my mistake on the wording as you are entirely right that it has no valve cover. intake and exhaust are simply ports cut in the rotor housing. never the less the Trade marked 3rotor logo is a mazda's as well as the video saying specifically what the engine is 3 times in the video as a "20b"
@SACKU16 жыл бұрын
yes and a higher compression. Rotor weight and apex seals is different too..... but that is getting picky :)

Actually stock, the 20B engine puts out 300 hp and 300 ft/lbs of torque. Upgraded these engines can go on quite a bit higher. With that large single snail in place that engine is definitely putting out more than stock, though I can't say for sure just how much. (I assume it's quite a lot since the video shows some crazy acceleration).

Actually, left hand drive cars are quite common in Japan. Most European and continental cars in Japan are LHD. It's weird that they don't bring in the RHD version of the cars eventhough it's in Asia.

@Evownz15 жыл бұрын
EnzosRus, why are you flipping out about this? The guy could have gotten the whole car LHD or just got the parts to make it that way. Who cares? I swear it's not worth freaking out about. I've rebuilt several 86s and can say with certainty that the swap is not hard, especially if you have the fabrication expertise to put a 20B into that chassis. I don't know where you live, but it must be on the coast or something. Here in the midwest, my friends have 6 AE86s between 3 people. They're out there.

Nice choice's but personally I would keep fuel injection system & save to upgrade it later, i.e. fuel pump, injectors, management & dyno tune. You'll get far more out of a set of cams & injection vs same & the holley, then there's the whole economy issue as well but as I have said it all depends on the purpose of the car. And is it legal. The holley thing you would never legal here. I'm guessing it is a street car. I'm making 300@whp. So fun. you'll want more Nice job on the weight reduction.
@RMBmike14 жыл бұрын
Love the potential of the rotary engine, and this car is INSANE fast but the swap woulda made more sense if the rotary didn't have so many reliability/longevity issues. An interesting swap would have been a Hayabusa or ZX/ZZR-14 engine with a turbo slapped on it. Haha. Badass car regardless!
@MrORLY16 жыл бұрын
I've got nothing against rotary engines but, without a turbo the torque is pretty weak and alot of the time you need to have the car bouncing of the rev limiter to get the power, very innovative design though.

If forced induction ruins the balance then it just means you have no control of your right foot. The engine does what you tell it to.
