I traded a sailboat mast and sails for it a few years ago so I don't have any money in it. I have the NC title for it so you wouldn't have any issues getting it titled & registered. I live less than 4 miles west of the Winterville, NC Harbor Freight.

@ 4:34, Actually it's the other way around... The more width you have contacting the seat, the better the valve can transfer heat, which will keep it cooler... However, the wider the contact area, the less flow/efficiency you will have... The 3 angle is all about making the port more efficient around the valve and seat... Pretty much anything you do to an engine, or anything else, will have a "compromise"... ( like choosing gear ratios, for example... smaller "drive" gear & larger "driven" will give you more acceleration, but will be sacrificing top speed) I believe that is one of the main reasons that we all have so much fun building our own stuff... Just friendly "constructive criticism" from my own experience... You guys have done a lot of awesome stuff, and are also very entertaining to watch!! I've been enjoying your vids for years now... Keep up the GREAT work, and thanks again for sharing!

Iron Ridge Outdoors people build 212s because of the size most of the time mabe like on minibikes they dont have unlimited space and for this gokart it was built for a 212 I assume.
@ironridgeoutdoors
@ironridgeoutdoors 6 жыл бұрын
For the same effort/money you could have thrown on a cr80 engine, a yamaha cart engine and a variety of snowmobile engines. All of which will fit where a 212 would with minor fab that these guys have done many times in the past. Don't get me wrong a built 212 is cool, but I'd never even consider it at $1k. So many better options. Different strokes for different folks I guess.

Great videos guys! There's a couple things I'd like to point out: What is said at 4:31 and 5:52 contradict each other. The truth is that you need sufficient width of the contact surface between the valve and the valve seat to allow heat to transfer from the valve to the cylinder head (which cools the valve). Too little and you'll burn an exhaust valve. Also, at 4:17, you're correct in saying that it could bump up the compression just the tiniest bit without that dimple in the valve, but it also adds weight to the valve. I think the additional valve weight would negate any gains from the compression increase. Again, great videos guys. I just wanted to comment because I'm sure you have a lot of fans (including me) that rely on your information. Cheers!

If you bought this exact engine, check your compression. And read this that I discovered. I bought the same exact engine for a big 2 person go kart, It ran fine for 10 hours, then lost power. After checking the compression on it, I was sad to see it only had 52 lbs. I took off the head, piston, checked the valves, piston, rings, gasket, and all seemed ok. I took the vales out because one seemed a little harder to push through and sanded with 600 paper. After putting it all back together I reached the compression and still had only 52 lbs instead of the 120 (8.5) it is suppose to have. NOW THE SHOCKER!!! I also bought a brand mew 3200/40000 watts generator, predator with the same exact engine. I had only started it when I got it and used it for about 20 minutes. I took the spark plug off and checked the compression. I was shocked to see it had the same 53 lbs as the other one. So Im wondering, it Harbor freight selling this engines with only 52 compression and know it or that is going on. With this little compression the engine is only maeing about 3 HP or less. Id like to have people with this engine check their compression and see if they also have a weak 1/2 compression as I do. If so, then we are getting the shaft and been ripped of. But worse the engine is not performing the way it is advertised and is breaking the law. Both harbor freight and Predator for making them this way.

If you end up hitting a Dyno remember to try Adjusting the length of your intake runner. To make it simple air bounces back and forth in the intake. By adjusting the length you change the timing of that pressure wave hitting a open valve. In turn adjusting the power band. Same by changing volume/diameter of it. Same applys to the exhaust for causing a vacuum to help scavenge exhaust out of the cylinder!

@MrTheHillfolk
@MrTheHillfolk 6 жыл бұрын
Do R/C! Not sure where he got that idea from too. That's the only time the valve can cool is when closed ,and more contact means more heat extraction. I've had issues in vws,they want about a .120 wide contact area. Get them much under .090 and watch em have much less reduced life.

Ok, for reaming the valve guides, the best way to center the reamer in the guide and keep the bore in line is to put the smooth shaft through the guide and pull it through with the drill. This will eliminate any wobble at the start of the reaming. Just so you know for the next head😊

Use oil when you ream. It’s hard to do by hand and you might have better results with a decent drill press. If you ream without oil (especially with a power drill) you’ll run the risk of bell-mouthing and/or going oversize. I use tapping oil or a moly oil for reaming. Transmission fluid also works well for tapping and reaming. In a drill press your reamer is much more rigid and you can bring the part to the reamer. You may also want to look into a honing kit if you want much smoother finishes on inner diameter. A reamer can do an excellent job if the reamer and the part are held firmly by Chuck and vice/fixture. But if you ream undersize then home that last few tenths (one “tenth” is .0001 inches.) you’ll get a very smooth finish with dead-nuts accuracy.

+OK, you were supposed to heat up the head prior to guide install (I use a propane hot plate with a flat piece of aluminum on it full of holes, fire it up, set head on for 15 mins and go with the frozen guides!) - You'd think Ike would know to use assembly lube on anything ever? (since he's a mechanic)- Also, perhaps some lube or never seize on the head bolts threads - You're supposed to oil the pins that the valve guide cutters go on- You can epoxy a crankcase vent into that giant hole you drilled- When attempting to "balance" that crank, you should have weighed it on a digital scale (you can get a weight watchers one for food thats super accurate from Walmart for like $12 or $15) Then after weighing it, take off the metal you needed to clearance the cam, then weigh whats missing, then take exactly that much off the counterweights......... I usually cringe and squint and yell at the screen NO!!! when I watch ya'alls engineering, but this video I almost had veins popping out of my forehead! LOL

Innovate makes a hand held O2 meter, comes with O2 sensor, you weld the sensor bung to the exhaust pipe, screw in the sensor, attach to 12 battery and read a/f ratio while you ride....

Man, I thought the video was really informative. And cool. The one thing I can say as I've watched hundreds of mini bike builds, mods etc...u guys had a good shop and all the tools.

All this work and money spent and a stock 250cc japanese dirtbike engine makes twice the horsepower, is reliable and cost half as much.

I ran a machine shop that worked on about any kind on engine, including go-karts. Any time you need to remove metal from the cranks rod journal, you don't need to remove any from the counterweight. A counterweight heavy engine is not a problem. Removing weight from a counterweight could lead to a counterweight light crank, which is a bad thing.

They make a tool to fly cut the piston so u can get more piston to valve clearance so you can mill the head for more compression.

If you chuck the reamer in you can use the shank as a guide. Just run it in reverse.

We used to do this with flathead briggs & stratton engines and run them on fuel. So much compression that you needed to fit the flywheel with a nut and have an external starter. Also needed an external tank because the stock ones kept breaking... and the engines just kept blowing up. Too much power - the blocks just couldn't handle it.

Hey Guys. interesting engine mod stuff, keep it up. However I would like to see some material concerning Briggs & Stratton Engines. Back in my day the Briggs was the engine on the Mini Bikes and Carts. So, of course, we hopped them up. A Briggs 5 horse can be hopped up a strong 12 HP. Back in '63 that summer I mowed Grandma's yard, then an Aunts and my other Grandma. So, in running the mowers and doing the maintenance on them I got hooked on the B&S engines. I have learned thru trial and error some stuff to bring out a tad more power out of these engines. Mowers, Mini Bikes, and Go Carts. I would be interested in seeing and hearing your thoughts.

Before you remove valve guides heat to head up to 250° that way you won’t remove any aluminum with a guide.

You should whack that governor gear off the crank to reduce rotating mass it's just pressed on and taps off easily.

The problems I have had with building these engines up was when I had purchased a billet aluminum rod with a performance cam 1 month later the rod almost went through my nuts I had built a custom bobber using existing moped parts such as the front end and wheels with a Frisco sporty tank. The engine was a suped up predator 420 after it was moded it was a 670cc which produced 27 HP the billet rods don't last that long they tend to fail at the base of the rod I even had one fail where the piston pin went through.
