Pretty crazy seeing a WW2 German anti-aircraft cannon mounted on a French helicopter so long after. Even crazier is I do believe the Mg151 started out life on fighter planes and ended up on halftracks as well! Pretty versatile and long lived weapon I'd say

Ya it was even used on a french tank as a commander kinda mg which is pretty cool, mg 151 was a pretty innovative cannon back in the day

Damn! That's seems a bit much but what the hell it had a great rate of fire but awfully big for that role I'd think.

A friend linked me to this video and it made me smile. It is a South African Air force training video. I know because I was the most junior Lt Pilot on the squadron and was ordered into my finest cameo role as squadron radio operator (sarcasm :) ) at 0:31 and 0:41. I think it was done about 1992 at 17/19 Squadron AFB Swartkops. Thanks for posting.

@Berend Emanuel Not sure about the footage on the rest of the video but I was comfortably sitting in Pretoria reading from a script :)

The application of the mg151 on the alouette III was tested and developed for Portuguese Air Force during the overseas war. In 1963 the sqdr canibais (canibal) and lobo mau (bad wolf) started to use it with great success.

A truly surreal blend of the archetypal, internally-produced coma-inducing corporate training film uniquely combined with utterly compelling subject matter! Wish the many monotone training film's I've been forced to sit through in my career dealt with mounting a f^cking 20mm cannon to a helicopter! Should've gone into the defence industry instead I guess... ;)

For real. If I'd had stuff as cool as a 20mm cannon I'd stayed awake during the torture of corporate films.

Them germans certainly could build them, if it aint broke dont fix it, imagine what 4 of them grouped in the nose of a 110 or 401 zestroyer could acheive...even before the 103 jaboshreck was introduced...also they used 15mm version of it early on but then stuck it on a lightweight drilling mount that could be towed or transported on horse carts easily, usually for extra forward airbase defence as the 15mm lacked the punch and was becoming obsolete they still was fitted to 190 wing roots to save weight, with the 20mm version in underwing condollars plugged into the bomb release mechanisms and a 20mm or 30 more on 109's through its prop bose with 2 mg 17's, side by side on top cowling with a little tracer ammo to get on target for ground roles and night fighting...
