Hello from Patagonia! I just heard from OnX Backcountry that they’re offering 70% off for an early Black Friday deal. So if you want a great deal on a year long membership (that’s like $9 for a premium membership!) use code “eric70bf”. Sorry it doesn’t apply to gift cards but if you just want to treat yo self, it’s a great time to do it! 👉 xmaps.com/backcountry/r/erichanson

It's that time of year to think of gifts to give our loved ones.....awww who are we kidding.....gifts to give ourselves. Great list of gifts Eric. I have the Petrel pot, Arcade belt, and the Backcountry Exposure food bag already. It is the perfect size to fit all your food for a two night backpacking trip. I just ordered the Govee thermometer to go in my stocking this year.

Tip with the sand/snow stakes, if you're planning to use them look up tutorials on their proper usage; using them the same way you'd use regular stakes (which is the way a lot of people use them and indeed the way they're often pictured in use on packaging/listings) does help a bit vs regular stakes but you can get even better hold with proper technique...

I can vouch for the grip6 socks. Love them hiking, but I wear steel toed boots to work every day and love their boot socks. Hold up much better than cheap cotton socks, and don't stink in the hot summers

For down booties I like the goose feet gear system where you can get super light 7d down socks with booties designed to go over them. Then you can sleep with the socks but walk around camp with the overbooties and not get ur sleeping socks dirty

NU 33 was my choice as as a low vision person. No fun not being able to distinguish the trail connection opening between trees when leaving your secluded campsite. Those extra lumins made a big difference. Weight difference was worth it.

I love my flip fuel valve! I use ice water and hot water to make the pressure difference. I did have one Lindl valve on a canister start to leak after refilling it many times, so watch out for that. And of course please weigh the canister you’re filling so you don’t overfill it! (Boom!)

The CRKT Biwa is my knife for backpacking, to make marshmallow sticks, food prep, and to filet trout. I like a fixed blade because its easier to hold, clean and more capable. Xd-2f stove and Petril pot FTW, best stove pot combo of 2024! Petri's performance is worth having to use the wind master or xd-2f they are best stoves performance wise anyway.

@alantewebdesign I think if you want a knife bring it! Many capable knives in the 1-2oz weight. I find it extremely helpful in many ways to carry a knife backpacking especially a very small fixed blade because its easy washable after I filet a fish or prep food and only weighs a couple ounces.

Nitecore refreshed the design for the previous look and feel with the NU-20 Classic, but honestly been thinking of giving the Nitecore HA-11 a try combined with an eneloop AA rechargeable or similar battery from other brands. Benefits of rechargeable but benefits from being able to replace fast with other AA's.

Happy Holidays Eric! Nice tips on the winter camping gear. The intergraded pot with windscreen is pretty cool ,and something Iv considered over the last weeks. I was unaware of the snow stakes though. I’ll be backpacking in the Canadian Rockies in January, so it’s definitely something I’ll look into purchasing. Seems pretty key for that environment. I forgot about the booties! Good recommendations!

I think your one step away from wearing turquoise jewelry. Sort of the Nathaniel Rateliff album cover look with a Clint Eastwood Pancho. I don't know... I just can see it in your eyes. I been doing the outdoor thing for a long time. I would be happy to receive any of these items. Nice list. Thanks for the share. 👴 Head lamp is awesome; I like the 25. 💚💚💚 Oh... I realize no one talks about it in the Backpkg/camping community. But a nice EDC Fanny pack would be a great gift. I use mine for much more than EDC, great front pouch.

While the flextail zero is small it doesn’t have the power to inflate most mattresses properly. However, their slightly larger models can and one has a built in light. They’re also amazingly useful to stoke camp fires. Grip6’s belts are amazing as well. I have a few and while their carbon fiber model is pricey, it’s worth it if you travel through airports a lot.

Oh before i forget again, the best sun hoodie for men on a tight budget that probably rivals an Oregon Research version (with better colors than OR LOL) is the Bassdash Men's UPF 50+ 1/4 Zip Fishing Hoodie. For coffee when i want a real brew instead of instant i can vouch the Soto Helix (or clones from CHY-NA) compare to french presses or an aero-press. If you get the clone from china make sure to get the similar sized one as they come in several sizes.

@@eric_hanson I gave up, bought the pad-pal. Much happier with this option. For overnight trips have you tried using your camera’s tripod with the Campingmoon refillable 15g canister or 35g canister to cook at camp chair height yet? This Old Fat Fart has fully loved that multi-use of items that I bring anyways on the shorter trips.

my understanding is that the fuel cannisters should be one time use only, have you heard anything different on impacts on refilling cannisters that are not designed to be filled up multiple times?

Fuel canisters are made for one-time use only. Tanks like scuba tanks are designed for multiple refills, but even those require recertification every x number of years.

The camping moon stove cannot be used with the fire maple petrel pot *unless you get the Soto triflex attachment to replace the 4 prong support it comes with. I’ve been using the camping moon +soto triflex + fire maple petrel here in Patagonia in extremely windy conditions and it’s been incredibly efficient!
