Primarily produced by Public Enemy's production team' The Bomb Squad, the album was an unexpectedly large critical and commercial success, and remains one of the defining hip hop albums of the 1990s.

He adopted a somber tone on purpose here to match the mood of the song. He couldn't rap it in his usual snarky timbre and cadence. When you're a rapper or singer, your voice is your instrument. Cube's vocal presence and execution are very underrated in hip hop. He's one of the best.
