What a lovely sounding Detroit! No over exaggerated ear-rape straight pipe sound and revving it to the floor in every gear. Smooth and lovely operation.

Used to hear the Detroit 8v71 plenty of times while living in Arcadia California. Many of the GMC New Look Fishbowl buses that Southern California Rapid Transit District had were powered by it. My favorite ways to hear the engine is either in the truck straight piped or in the GMC New Look Fishbowl Bus or a Grumman 870.

@@Will-ct9ww shift pattern is exactly the same for us down here, just on the other side of you. so reverse is away from me and forward, instead of towards you and forward like you'd be used to. clutch brake and throttle are all in the same positions too, so our throttle is next to the door, instead of in the middle of the truck 😊

Most of the memories I have associated with the sound of the Detroit 8v71 are from when I was ten years old and later and while living in greater Los Angeles area. Used to hear the Detroit 8v71 in many of the GMC New Look Fishbowl buses that were in service with Southern California Rapid Transit District. There was also a truck stop not far from where we lived so I got enjoyment with 8v71 in trucks too but mostly buses. Time after time after time when I heard it I would be happy and smiling.

Imagine being 6 or 7 years old, riding in an Eagle Model 10 near the rear of the bus where the engine is located while the motorcoach operator is rowing through the gears, occasionally grinding as he’s up or downshifting. It was music to my ears. The sound of my childhood. The voice of a bygone era.

Nice video, love it Just melodies, diesel engine melodies. Not just an ordinary diesel engine, this is a truly legendary engine that build some parts of the world... I'm from Indonesia and I love two-stroke Detroit since 2018. Never met or see one here in Indonesia, but, I'm hoping could bought one or two with the 2-stroke Detroit Diesel in it. The music melody it gives is staggeringly beautiful. If you want something, you gonna have to risk something else, that is what you get when having a 2-stroke DD. You could get beautiful sound, a reliable engine, and good pulling power but on the downside, (sometime) you get oil leaks, poor fuel mileage (mostly), and some angry lads.

Donaldson truck mufflers were the go back in the day to get that sound. The 453's with only the blower & no turbo running a Donaldson 'suburban' muffler gave an even better sound again ,but you were down on torque. If you ran the 'highway' version of that muffler you got the sound your getting from that Kenny ,which is music to the ears & brings back memories. I've seen one of those 8V's with a set of headers custom made as you can run extractors on a 4 stroke diesel ,man ya need fuckin' earmuffs !!!

Hi from France, yeah i grew up in Australia with 'gemmies',the 671,the 6V71,8V71 then came out the '92 séries,but to be honest i'd have a hard time driving one now (no offense meant),the gear these days is just so quiet and confortable.That said,it's with great pleasure that i watched this video,changing gears here is a thing of the past,not too many blokes here would know how to use a Roadranger,most transport companies here no longer have manual gearbox's in their fleets.I'd love to know the fuel consumption of an 8V71 and the décibels. Great little video.

I grew up around trucks when I was a kid as my father had a single drive half sleeper Atkinson with a 6-71 10 speed overdrive, 4.11 Rockwell diff. A natural 8V71 can get between 4 and 6 mpg depending on the driver. I worked for a guy that had this engine in with a turbo on each side and go real good up hills too.

@@andrewking4885 thanks for that,the mob i work for drive me nuts with their fuel consumption figures,I'll just try to convert from MPG,to litres per 100 kms be interesting to see.
@villainjohnnoel80752 жыл бұрын
Well 8mpg= 29.41 l/100kms (exellent) 6mpg =39.21 l/100 kms (they'd kill me) 4mpg = 58.82 l/100kms (i'd get put back on training). Personally,with my little 460 Renault, single drive, pulling a petrol tanker (44 tonnes) half my mileage is empty,i'm at about 30l/100kms.
@andrewking48852 жыл бұрын
@@villainjohnnoel8075 I take your towing a tri-axle tanker at 44 tonnes as a guess. Actually 6mpg used to be the benchmark for economy. Scania seem to be the most fuel efficient of diesel engines and the price is climbing all the time @ about $2:40 per litre. There's in cab footage of a twin turbo V12 Detroit called "Seattle 🌟 Star Kenworth". That truck was getting 4.5- 5mpg with unreal power. Cheers from Australia.

I haven't had much to do with 2 stroke Detroits, what are the usual high and low rev ranges? Do you have to keep them on the boil or can you lug them down?
@jakeminogue2 жыл бұрын
This one is naturally aspirated, I think high idle on the govenor is about 2200rpm. it starts to pull from about 1750rpm up to about 2100rpm, its happy cruising at about 1900rpm at 93km/h. when you're loaded you really need to rev it out to atleast 2000rpm or it will fall on its face a bit when you grab the next gear. I can't speak for how the turbo or 92 series detroit go through!
@danielseelye6005 Жыл бұрын
They're called "Screamin' Jimmies" for a reason. The rule of thumb is before you get to driving, slam the door on your fingers to piss you off and/or drive it like it owes you money. They don't like being lugged down.
@hoost3056 Жыл бұрын
The naturally aspirated Detroits have to be spun and worked hard, the turbo models were a lot better. You can't lug them or idle them for too long, got to keep them busy. If you want an engine that was a little more easy going go with a big block Cummins or Cat.
