But our life expectancy went from 1 and 3 to, we've all been alive for weeks on 1 life. I've become so bold to take out groups alone and when my team is on we don't die. I'd like to add, that I study my targets now. I write down names of confirmed members, spots they frequent, and how they operate. Thanks to using what I've learned from you as a foundation for pvp we've become rather successful. Thank you bud

Great stuff. Particularly to DayZ's looting mechanic, I would add that you should allow yourself a substantial amount of time overwatching your takedown before you loot them, unless you are absolutely certain all parties were taken down. I once sat in overwatch of a kill for 1h45min because I had a sense they had a friend nearby (when I moved away enough from the town, dead zeds were not despawning) and sure enough, after a long, long wait his friend attempted to loot the body and got promptly killed. That also goes the other way around: if you see a geared dead player that looks unlooted, there's a high chance it is being overwatched, especially if you heard the sounds of the gunfight less than 30 min ago.

I played casual mil-sim for a long while and even though it's by no means anything similar to actual military training, they still give you a cursory knowledge of stuff like sky-lining. Now when I play other games I mentioned it and most people have no idea what I'm talking about, but they all seem to have an "ah-ha" moment when you explain it (if they even care). And the "One Below" feels like a great way of forcing you to keep your ego in-check by preventing you from trying to push boundaries that will often lead to mistakes or death. This is especially necessary the younger you are I imagine as young men are far more likely to attempt to push boundaries than an older experienced dude is.

Outstanding video, Alex! Suggestion for a theme would be for players to familiarize themselves with the variety of gunsights available, such as the PSO-1 and ACOG. The distance measuring reticles actually work, and if you know how to use them will seriously up the distance at which you can confidently engage targets. Other things more specific to game mechanics could also be interesting, such as weapon loadouts (one gun for up close, range, silent work, etc.), considering how easy ammo is to get by and weapon maintenance. For an instance, most guns are damaged or badly damaged when you find them. People tend to repair sniper rifles first seeing as they are the rarest, most valuable finds, only to neglect their secondary (sidearm or close to medium range AR) and have it jam on them in a fire fight. I know I would rather have a gun jam when engaging an enemy who doesnt know Im there or when duking it out at distance, than up close and while engaging multiple hostiles... Long story short: if you dont have the proper tools for the right job, properly configured for what you are trying to do and lack the ammo you need to do it with, your not gonna win any fights at all! Anyways, just suggestions - but keep those vids coming, Alex! Theyre well worth a watch for old and new players alike!

@UrbanDefenseSystems8 ай бұрын
Do they work in all weapons and calibers though? I don't know how it works in DayZ, but in real life, reticles and their BDCs (bullet drop compensators) are calibrated for a certain rifle, and a certain ammo. I'd imagine it's kinda similar in DayZ, where the TA01NSN scope is calibrated for an M4, but not for an AKM.
@Barrythebarnabas6 ай бұрын
@UrbanDefenseSystems YES. I know this late but I recently got into Dayz and almost immediately I noticed an issue. I had a crossbow with an M4A1 ACOG, I wasn’t paying attention to the zeroing distance and lost half my bolts cuz they kept flying over the targets heads. Some sights literally cannot even be equipped to weapons, like real life guns without rails limits the potential attachments you can just slap on there

Back when I got way too into DayZ (I would play literally 8 hours a day after work), I noticed how my perception on spaces changed. I found the basic training on an AK interesting. Zero to 440m and aim for the dick. Great if you're terrible at judging distance and to land shots reliably. I still prefer to just zero in accurately and go for the chest but it's kinda cool how quickly you can achieve results with it. Just aim for the dick and throw a burst. You'll hit something.
@Gottaculat8 ай бұрын
It's interesting how much of this is about land navigation more than marksmanship or tactics. Land navigation is a huge aspect, because if you don't have the basics of land navigation, how do you expect to execute tactics? We learned land (and sea) navigation in the Boy Scouts when I was a kid, and I grew up before internet or even personal computers were common. Cell phones and car phones technically existed, but only the mega-wealthy had them. When going on road trips, my dad assigned me to be his navigator. We would acquire physical paper maps as current as possible of the US highway system, and any towns/cities we'd pass through (a road trip could easily be over 1,000 miles). We used land navigation methods like you mentioned, such as, "When we see this exit, the next exit is the one we want," or, "If we see this town, we went too far and need to correct course." You made a note of which notable towns, national/state parks, rivers, etc. were on the correct path. Once on our trip, if we were taking more than one car (we didn't have a minivan until 1995), it was also my job to man one of our radios so we could communicate with the other vehicle when rest stops were needed, or as a reminder our exit was approaching. We also did similar stuff with sailing and canoeing trips. It was weird when I started playing DayZ about 7-8 years ago, many of my friends just followed me because being able to navigate was totally foreign to them, but they saw I knew what I was doing. Meanwhile, I'd be like, "Where the fuck are we?" because I don't read/speak Russian, and all the signs are in Cyrillic. However, I'd remember the first 3 letters, like, "If you see 3, Pi-sign, and e, we're near Electric Town," (Elektro - which has a powerplant), or, "If you see 4EP and tall hillside apartments, we're near Cherno," and, "If you see RP backwards N, we're on the East side of the NWAF." Another thing I learned growing up were some of the marksman related stuff you mentioned, as my dad - while not assigned to a marksmanship unit, did win a 300 man shooting competition in basic training for Vietnam, and his job overseas during the war was to turn artillery coordinates into firing solutions that would then be relayed to the appropriate artillery batteries. He told me his particular unit was good enough that they could send a 200 pound 105mm Howitzer shell to within 10 yards of the given coordinate, from as far as 21 miles away (usually they shot only a dozen or less miles, though), and usually they could have the shells on target within 30 seconds of receiving the coordinate - assuming the computers were operational. There was a huge checklist of things/variables, but it was just a matter of making sure your data was correct. He told me shooting a rifle is basically similar to artillery, but easier as the distance is shorter. The bracketing method you mentioned was one such thing he taught me, and yes, we used football fields as a unit of measure, lol! He said they did the same thing in artillery school when doing the role of determining the coordinates to give. If you knew your location, which way is North, and in what direction and approximate distance the target was from your position, you could figure out the target coordinate. He intentionally did poorly at this part of artillery school, because he knew the radio guy's life expectancy in the field was about 2-3 days, and he intended to survive the war, so he let the other guys show off. A bunch of them did get those positions in the field, and my dad heard confirmation that at least half of them died in the field. The one guy was so good, he could, on the first shot, drop a 105mm dummy shell on the hood ornament of any given derelict vehicle they were targeting on the range, and my dad told him he was nuts, lol. Nuts, because they stuck him out in the field when deployed, and the guy was one of the ones that never came home. Anyway, great video, and hopefully you enjoyed my ramblings about growing up learning land navigation and shooting from my dad, who's still alive and in good health, turning 79, soon. Until next time: Good hunting!

This is a really interesting video. I don't know how to say this but I feel like DayZ gives a generally good example of being in a battle/war in terms of freedom and tactics on how to approach a fire fight. The large map, freedom to choose how, when, and type of engagement you prefer, assuming you have time. Obviously this is nothing like reality so I don't mean to compare the two things. But I do find the perspective of someone like yourself is very interesting to hear. Solo tactics vs. duo or team tactics, geography, cover options, gun/ammo availability are all things to consider. You can run and gun but you can also get very tactical and think out unique ways to approach battles in DayZ and I love it

Guys, if you can learn to communicate efficiently with your teammates, you will have, in my opinion, one of the absolute biggest and most potentially domination-enabling advantages in any team-based shooter, hands down. I really believe that. Almost nobody outside milsim games communicates with any kind of efficiency or efficaciousness. I absolutely love the tips about efficiency of communication. Conveying information without speed and efficiency is probably my biggest pet peeve in shooters. There's nothing more frustrating than hearing a teammate say "Oh shit, there's a dude!" First of all, what dude? Is it a hostile dude? Is it an unconscious dude? A dead dude? A zombie dude? Is this dude your friend? I need so much more info about this dude... And secondly, WHERE is this dude? What's this dude doing? Does this dude see us? [...] I want to know about a contact's awareness, hostility level, movement and direction, location, etc., but most people really, actually don't know how to give that kind of detail, or else under stress they completely forget to/how to do it.

One thing I noticed you doing which i think wasn't a talked about point. Was your zig zagging. Keeping them guessing with that and stop and go (which stopping is always bad but not when it's less than half a second). I learned that moving in a straight line is just as bad as standing still years ago in a game " Delta force: black hawk down" I also think the greatest thing about using zigzags and Stop & go is the use of latency, lag, and server ping. I'm pretty sure you factor those in as well.

A sniper could be anywhere, yet they run on open fields, no cover, make tons of noise, always running. So after 2 hours running around searching useless stuff SuperStreamer gets up a ladder, dead. Because he did not think: Someone COULD be here. Double peak for him means: YOU go first and draw the fire. And so on. The worst gamers I have seen since PacMan...

I learned that I had a fair few of these traits to begin with, with the exceptions being positioning callouts. Turns out yelling over there, or by that thingy isn't the best method of calling for your team. But also that my team does not have the patience to stalk or wager risk vs reward. We roll 4 deep so they just kinda hope numbers will win it, and roughly 30% of the time it works 100% of the time. I also learned that there is a name for my janky zeroing method that I've been mocked a fair time or two over. Overall I came out of this video feeling kinda proud of myself, and will bookmark this video as I feel slow go or no go is going to take a while to get cemented in my head

If only there was an item in this game that could let you measure the distance to your target without football field mathematics.

Closest ive ever gotten to being prepared for these steps is finding a mosin and forgetting to put bullets in it and getting killed by someone with a broom

One of the things army teaches you is how to teach. Over hundreds of years they have developed the ability to impart useful information and training to blokes who were often not very interested and not very bright. You have to be able to teach a lazy version of Forrest Gump. This is a surprisingly useful skill in civilian life, too. Many people don't know how to explain things and get their point across simply and succinctly.
