One thing I did not understand for a long time was why seemingly beautiful and clean rivers and brooks were getting nearly free of fish. A few species did even get extinct in my region. Only lately it was recognized that the amount of insects did drop to a small percentage of the original numbers within the last twenty years or so. So there was not enough food for fish and birds alike. It happened to a very wide range of insect species, specially to the ones living in water habitats as larvaes.

Every one of them, whether bird, fish or mollusc, was immensely precious.

Species restriced to islands and a few brooks and rivers are extremely vulnerable and can rapidly decline in population numbers and do often face extinction. Molluscs are hardly noticed by most people and therefore their extinction is often not even recognised for many years. It even happens to fish populations. Few people fish and snorchel in small streams and rivers. And it seems that most people do not even give a damn about life under water. Luckily the contrary can also happen. The brook lamprey was regarded extinct in Switzerland. But this creature lives so hidden that it is hardly ever seen. I was part of a surveillance program studying fishes in small runs of water and we actually found and caught a living example. A small creature hiding in sand and mud is hardy ever visible. Most people might shake their heads seing how excited I got finding this small eel like critter.
