*London is full of scammers who would scam you in a heartbeat when you go looking for a place to stay. I mean, estate agents or other types of agencies who offer accommodation. These scammers may look legit because they have offices on posh streets, but they are scammers nonetheless. There is a company called **_AHK International,_** on 5 New Quebec Street, London W1H 7RG, which offers accommodation (this is not an estate agent, by the way) but has a history of defrauding people. The woman who USED to work there (don't know if she still does) is called **_Nelly Ivanova,_** but she never uses her real name, which is **_Aneliya Milcheva Ivanova,_** born 1965. She is a very ill-tempered woman and has, over many years, defrauded tenants by not returning their security deposits to them when they leave, or making false statements about their gas & electricity bills and deducting excessive amounts from their security deposits to cover these bills. When the former tenant demands to see the gas & electricity bills to verify that the amount she has deducted from their security deposit does indeed match the amount on those bills, she will YELL at them and ask them whether they are calling her a liar! Yelling and intimidating tenants is her modus operandi of covering her tracks, covering the fact that she is defrauding them. **_AHK International_** is owned by a Palestinian called Abdul Haleem Kherallah (hence the "AHK") and you can see what people think of his company at* london.cylex-uk.co.uk/company/ahk-international-13494723.html#google_vignette *Ivanova's details:* find-and-update.company-information.service.gov.uk/officers/h7BQGOo9YGqMfHXIm5YbHocO2VE/appointments

Love that you mentioned Southwark, it's the borough I live in and people often think it's rough and dangerous, it's definitely not. The South of the river is definitely better than the North. Also great last tip, if I need to look at my phone when I'm out I'll normally stand somewhere not look at it whilst I'm walking along.

I'm a londoner and you are spot on (there are cheaper meal deals for 3.70). One things I would add is being aware when walking a busy street. If you need to stop or walking slowly with people make sure people can easily walk around you. If you stop, stop at the side of the pavement. London is very busy and people keep moving. Any hold up holds up everyone

The City of London is one of my favourite walks. There are many things online with the route but don't miss the Roman underground things - Mithraem and Ampitheatre. My advice for walking around is... unless you're a family with small children, if you're in a busy place, please walk single file until you get to where you're going. If you want to get a picture of something, don't just stop short. And... two-headed monsters (that's couples who can't spend .08 seconds away from each other) it's okay to let go of each others' hands and walk single file for just awhile. You'll reconnect later.

As a resident of Tokyo, I was shocked at how short the pedestrian street crossing times are in London; and you need to look both ways before stepping off the median strip because the cross times are staggered. Just because it's green on the first one doesn't mean it's green on the second. That said, nothing compares to crossing the street in Hanoi! Why are UK trains so tiny? Japanese trains are spacious and the Japanese are so small compared to Brits. The Northern Line trains are absolutely claustrophobic with very narrow aisles, the width of a carry-on suitcase. Paris is my favorite city on the planet in part because of the architecture and the way the city is laid out. I didn't think I would like London so much but there's history around every corner even though the buildings are a mishmash of styles because of WWII destruction. I like to spend a minimum of a week and explore the different neighborhoods. St John's Wood and Maida Vale are very posh and interesting to walk about.

I've lived in London for over 30 years and these are great tips. The "adding a service charge to the bill in a restaurant" thing isn't really new, it was the norm with mid-market restaurant chains decades ago. I think what has happened is that the practice has spread to restaurants where tipping used to be left to the individual diner. Someone has already mentioned The Gatwick Express (only really useful if you are in a real hurry, not on a strict budget, and need to go to Victoria). The same also applies to The Heathrow Express from Heathrow to Paddington, it's much cheaper to use the Elizabeth Line from Heathrow to Paddington and cheaper still to use The Picadilly Line to get into Central London.

Look up "IFS Cloud Royal Docks" or "IFS Cloud Greenwich Peninsula" on Google Maps. They're actually part of the London public transport network so you can just 'tap in' like you do on the tube. It's been a while since I did it, but it was quite a good experience - we then got a taxi over to Greenwich Park and walked down and got the Thames Clipper boat back into Central London ✌️

Be careful about relying on cards if your cards are not issued by a UK or European bank. Some venues/services don't recognise the chip in cards from other parts of the world. While they are supposed to allow a swipe option, the venue staff may not know how to register options to enable that. This is true across Europe, even on some highways where you have to pay on exit. This is my experience from travelling over 90& of Europe with a mix of Australian and US cards.

Just a tip about phone snatching. I use an android phone so these tips are for android only. Make sure you have all the Google Services theft protection options enabled. You can then remotely lock and erase your phone from any smartphone or on the web. Use the guest partition whenever you are out in public, and only put the most necessary apps on the guest partition. Don't put your email app on the guest partition, so they won't be able to access your email account. Don't put any banking apps on your guest partition. Turn off OTP notifications on your phone, so they won't be able to get the codes. And if you can afford it, get a "burner" smartphone, a cheap one, that you won't mind losing if you are going to a sketchy area. Don't bring your top of the line phone into an area where it is likely to get stolen.

👍🏻Overall good advice. Tips in restaurants are generally shared by the staff, there are some exceptions however so you can always ask your server first. Luton is not a London airport and very substandard. You are right Paris gets more rain and Amsterdam a lot more. You said “no disrespect to Croydon” which I found very amusing. To be honest it’s a soulless, banal place, trashed in 60’s and 70’s from which it’s never recovered.

I agree with everything except removing the 12.5% unless the service has been awful. The majority of reputable places do give the staff these tips and in London they need them. Many staff either are part time/casual and others work double shifts. In one very busy restaurant lunch is served 12-3. Dinner 6-10 or 11?. Staff would start about 11am and not get home till midnight or later. Don't deny them their tips unless you can justify it.

It’s illegal for a business not to pass the service charge (tip) on to staff. As for tipping not being a ‘thing’, maybe not in a cafe if you’re just ordering at the counter, but in restaurants where there’s table service and no added service charge, tip unless the server is really bad.

The service charge should be illegal. Looking at, for example, a restaurant £50 per person. Possibly an average of £150 per table. One waiter per 4 tables, so £600 the service charge per hour approx £75. That's on top of the waiters' wages if the "tip" goes to them. I earn about £17ph nobody gives me extra potential 4x my hourly wages for just doing the job I'm already paid to do. Its ridiculous. The fact that if you order wine and therefore pay an extra 12.5% on that too the markup is outrageous.

Tipping in the UK depends upon whether or not the service charge is included. If it is then it is not customary to add tips. You can ask to have the service charge removed so you then tip the staff (around 10% is usual but not compulsory). I don’t think I have ever had the restaurant remove the service charge - OK, if the service was appalling then it might be acceptable, but otherwise it’s normal to pay it. One other thing; it used to be the case that if you waited on by the owners of the business, you didn’t need to tip - not sure what the latest advice is.

Overall, it's a good summary, but your tipping advice is a bit off... so as you say, table service is unusual here, so when we get it, it's customary to tip... and as you say, most places add a service charge (to save us our blushes as we're shy about such things)... only add a tip if there isn't a service charge, and only take the service charge off if the service was genuinely bad or you didn't receive table service (ie you ordered at the counter/bar and took the goods away with you), in short... if someone brought the goods to your table... and the service was good, pay... yes historically, the money went to the company... but it was a big media scandal and now the laws have changed, so that service charge now goes to the employee as intended! But you will be seen as rude if you ask to have the charge removed if you received table service and the service was at least as expected!

Jesus, this is like the same videos I’ve seen about New York, congratulating yourselves for living in a major city and offering veiled complaints about tourists by saying “this is a working city.” Everyone knows this. That’s why they are visiting. In fact, people visiting your city also work, so they know how things function. And pretty much everywhere you visit, people are working. Be thankful for those tourist dollars instead of condescending. 😂

The service charge no longer goes straight to the business. It is now illegal for the business to take any of it; it must be 100% distributed among the employees. Drivers must stop for pedestrians on traffic light controlled crossings and on marked zebra crossings. You can't even pronounce some of the place names in London. Some expert.

London is over crowded, over priced and dirty in many areas.crime is high. Not too pleasant. Fine for some history, or nightlife, otherwise its unpleasant.

"Tipping isn't really a thing", "they have automatically added the tip". Both things can't be true.

Here's a good one, skipping. I recommend skipping London.

"London is not a theme park" ... really? I thought it was a theme park with extra steps. Or maybe I am thinking about NYC.

Boring and mundane. Many statements are untrue or a bit shaky. So obvious that this is one person's view and inessential priorities given. Nobody would spend all day in Covent Garden.and Soho, unless they were stupid.

Guess my friends and I are stupid then 😂 But what I will say is that there is no way I would take my phone out to use to pay for anything. It’s staying in my bag where it is not likely to be snatched out of my hand,
