This song is about Passover. God told the Hebrews to mark their door frames with goats blood, so that when he sent Death into the town at night to kill all the first born sons of the Egyptians, Death would know which houses to "Passover".

they wrote and recorded this at age 21( you can hear how young James Hetfields voice sounds) and I saw them perform it live last friday in copenhagen with just as much speed and power at age 60 !

Cliff and the boys were watching the 10 commandments and the cloud of mist that came into the town to take all the firstborn sons was called creeping death by Cliff. That’s how it started. It’s about the Passover.

It's about the enslavement of the Jews in Egypt, the plagues of Egypt, and basically about God sending the plagues of Egypt, and about the whole story of how the Jews were freed in the Bible which the enslavement of the Jews went on for 400 years. James Hetfield is a genius for writing the song from the point of view of one one of the plagues.

It is essentially the Exodus story from the Bible put into heavy metal form. There was no Metallica played on the radio until the Black album.

As for the title - the band watched the movie “The 10 Commandments”, in which a poisonous fog rolls through one scene, and Cliff Burton (bass player) said at the time “whoa, it’s like creeping death!”

they were also in their early 20s....The song is told from the perspective of the "Destroyer", the Angel of Death sent by God during the Tenth Plague of Egypt. Moses, through his older brother Aaron, insisted he was sent by God and repeatedly demanded that Pharaoh should set the Hebrew slaves free from Egypt to the promised land of Canaan. For the previous 400 years, the Hebrew people had lived as slaves in the Land of Goshen within Egypt. To punish Pharaoh for his obstinacy, God set ten plagues upon Egypt

The lyrics with comments in between in order to explain. The comments are prefixed with **. Slaves, Hebrews born to serve To the Pharaoh Heed, to his every word Live in fear ** The Hebrews (Abrahams offspring and God's chosen nation) were enslaved by the Egyptians. Faith of the unknown one The deliverer Wait, something must be done Four hundred years ** It was foretold there would be a deliverer that would come and free the Hebrews. So let it be written So let it be done ** This phrase essentially meant the events would be recorded as prophesied. I'm sent here by the chosen one ** "I'm" is the "Destroyer" or "Angel of Death" speaking....but in reality it was God that sent him not Moses (the chosen one). So let it be written So let it be done To kill the first-born Pharaoh son ** This is the last plague out of 10 to come upon the Egyptians since they ignored pleas to let God's people go in the prior nine plagues as the 10th is death to the first born of Egypt. I'm creeping death ** "Creeping death" is the "Destroyer" or "Angel of Death" sent to invoke the 10th plague (death to Egypt's 1st born) Now, let my people go Land of Goshen ** "Land of Goshen" is where the Hebrews lived near Egypt. Go, I will be with thee Bush of fire ** God told Moses in the burning bush (prior to the start of the 10 plagues) he'd be with him as he told Pharoah to let his people go. Blood, running red and strong Down the Nile ** God turned the Nile river to blood which was the first plague. Plague, darkness three days long Hail to fire ** There was plague of flies, frogs, and darkness for three days as well as Hail the burned as fire on the ground So let it be written So let it be done I'm sent here by the chosen one So let it be written So let it be done To kill the first-born Pharaoh son I'm creeping death ** Again, the "Destroyer" or "Angel of Death" was sent to kill the first born of Egypt. Die by my hand (die) I creep across the land (die) Killing first-born man (die) Die by my hand (die) I creep across the land (die) Killing first born man (die) I rule the midnight air The destroyer Born, I shall soon be there Deadly mass I creep the steps and floor Final darkness ** The event of the "Destroyer" doing his task of killing and fulfilling the 10th plague. Blood, lambs blood painted door I shall pass ** The Hebrews were instructed by Moses to paint their door post with lambs blood to indicate to the "Destroyer" or "Angel of Death" to "Passover" that house. So let it be written So let it be done I'm sent here by the chosen one So let it be written So let it be done To kill the first-born Pharaoh son I'm creeping death ** Bear in mind, the reason for the different plagues was to humiliate the various God's of Egypt and to show that they were inferior to the True God (the Creator of all things). For example Amon-Ra the supposed preserver of all the firstborn which of course were the targets of the 10th and last plague which showed was inferior to the True God since he could not stop or reverse it.

There are going to be so many people telling you check out the moscow 91 live version....
For someone from the Netherlands.... you sound like a American or even Canadian. No accent to our ears even a Brit one. Also Metallica DOES NOT BLOCK Videos or most Live concerts. Also, Metallica did do a couple ballads that some Thrash Metal purist were not fold of like off their Black Album from '91. Yet today the album is iconic and the ballads even more well known now. They are "Nothing Else Matters" and it does have a video and "Unforgiven" for another side of Metallica still in their prime.
