This project is very 'risky'.
Because it can turn from amazing to terrible in a sudden and in a few steps.
Last year, when all the chicks died, we kind of regretted the whole cam project.
And it was a sad moment when we found Hemag dead.
Their lifeform seems both so very robust and very vulnerable at the same time.
And it can be hard to understand this in a 'good' way.
According to researcher's stats, it's not unnormal that chicks die, at all.
The 'problem' is the cams.
We follow these incidents in HD and very closely.
It could seem contradictory that chicks die when the parents are so dedicated and devoted.
Sweetie and Guy are first timers. Maybe there are also some experiences they lack.
There are so many things we don't know.
We hope for the best for the rest of the kids.
This is only the second year with cams inside the nest.
Maybe it will become 'easier' if we continue this project for more years.

Ornitologists don't recommend raising a mag chick. It's really demanding in all ways. They need, as you say, proper attention all the time. Mag parents are as fantastic as they need to be (and even that is not enough some times), we are not. Unfortunatley raising a chick, even for rescuing it, will have big and permanent disadvantages for the bird. The bird is sadly hindered from becoming a magpie, no matter how well they are cared for. They will never learn to interact properly with other magpies. So taking a chick in to try to raise it is problematic and must be the absolute last thing to do. Hopefully your chick will do well. And yes, it's very tough to be a magpie in the wild. From 6-7 eggs only about 3 chicks in average will grow to leave their nest by their wings. And even though the magpies biologically can live until they are about 20 years, the average life span is just a little over 3 years. It's sad to know, but it's the nature's way.

They probably got too cold with Mom leaving and being away too much since they are way too young to produce and regulate their own body temperature.

Yes, you might be right. The parents were both first timers and very unexperienced. Besides the spring was unusually cold with little insects. Their dedication was massive, but it was not enough this time. This year it went much better. Sweetie and Guy nested in a tree about 50m away, so we could not follow them closely. But through the summer the parents 'presented' four chicks of their own in our garden. That is nice.

Yes, it could seem a little paradoxical: this life form could seem very solid, but still they are so vulnerable at times. It is amazing and impressive to see how dedicated the parents are. Still it did not work out this time.

@@picapicalife Exactly! I was able to record 4 nests this summer and only one older chick died while in the nest. You can tell though that the newly hatched chicks are very fragile and weak. Seems like they’re always on the line between living and not making it.

The chicks don't seem to be fed enough by the parents
@picapicalife
@picapicalife Жыл бұрын
We never really found out why these chicks died, but yes, you might be right. The parents were very didicated and tried to do their very best, but it was obviously not enough this time. The year before, the chicks died because they were infected by parasites. That was documented. This year (2021) it was different. What we know is that this couple, Sweetie and Guy, were first timers at the time and very young. More mature couples succeed more often. The spring was also very special, being cold for a long time with little or no insects. There were also building activity at our house nearby. This is what we know, but it could of course be other reasons. Since then this couple has successfully bred 4 chicks this year, in another nest 50 m away. Guy, being from the other side of the sea, has become much more trustful to us (the first year he was very wary). Sweetie, born in a nest next to our garden, has always been relaxed to us. They have just started to show some interest in the nest in the steel tree again, but the building will not start yet. So we will have to wait to see.

Parent birds are not clearing out their chicks throats! They are regurgitating food to feed their chicks!
@picapicalife
@picapicalife 2 жыл бұрын
Almost all birds have crops (this handy bag in between the mouth and the stomach). The adults use the crop to bring more food than they can solely in their beaks (to feed chicks or eat themselves later). They bring food up from this crop to feed chicks. Magpie chicks are fed insects in the beginning. Insects' shells (the exoskeleton) are made of chitin. This is tough stuff. Guess this is hard for little magpie stomachs to digest. The chicks regurgitate the parts of the insects that is not digestable for them. The magpie parents skillfully pick this out of their mouths/throats. We have seen it many times. Different birds hatch at a different developmental level. Seagull chicks for instance are at a far more self sufficient level when they hatch than magpie chicks. They have open eyes, downy feathers and can start walking on their feet just hours after hatching. We have never observed seagull chicks being 'helped' the way as the magpie chicks do. Magpie chicks are naked, blind and completely helpless when they hatch (and for many days). They need more subtle care in the beginning. Thank you for watching. It's very nice for us to be able to share this. Both parents were very dedicated and devoted. Still something went wrong. We have had visits from this year's chicks in this territory (from the nearby), so there have been a lot of successful hatchings this year. This was this couple's first time nesting. The spring was hard with few insects. Maybe the combination of those two factors was not ideal. They seem to plan to nest again in the same nest next year. We cross our fingers.

It was very sad to watch. It's harder to raise chicks in the wild than maybe we know. We believe it was because of one of three unhappy circumstances. They were unexperienced as parents. This was their first nesting ever. That spring was special. It was very cold. The insects appeared very late in the season. There was a house renovation nearby with scaffolding and much activities. Maybe one or more of these circumstances were the reason? It is documented that more experienced parents succeed more. We really hope for them this spring. Thank you for watching. Oh dear, I guess it will never become easier as long as we still care about the nature and those gorgeous creatures. Raising chicks in wild is much more difficult than I thought before, really. Guy is patient and Sweetie is cautious. They may be newbies but already be a better pair of parents than many humans. Mother Nature is cruel yet deserves all the respects from us. I feel sad for those leaving ones and feel grateful for those living ones. No matter what, the whole thing is worthwhile.🖤🤍💙

Thanks. You are probably right, but maybe it will be good to be a little more prepared. We don't know. Yes, it's tough some of it. But still, knowledge has a kind of importance. We are thinking about, we have not 'changed', the birds have not 'changed'. The only thing that has changed is the cam and the knowledge that comes with it. And then everything really has changed. They are not 'some birds' anymore, as they used to be. Knowing means caring, simple as that. We are thinking about all we don't know (in nature). We were not very prepared for the sad parts, but on the other hand the beautiful parts have taken us with big surprise too. Maybe it is really true you can't get the one without the other.
