Another Oscar winner, I was holding my breath when you you were taking the wire clip of the end of the shaft. Good video John.

Yep.. I've got a jingling bendix! I can rotate the bendix along the shaft and it doesn't snap back either, so need to look at that too. Thanks john

Also know as an inertia starter. This method also works well for the classic Mini which uses a very similar (9 teeth) starter. Brits call "vise grips" "Mole grips". many thanks for this.

Had a couple of those springs fly around the shop before, that can be fun right! Great video Mr Twist

Very useful - thanks! I've got the 'jingling' starter issue. I've changed the whole bendix unit as my last one didn't have the retaining clip. Now it's even worse! I wasn't clear on the 'judicial use of a hammer' to sort it though...? Hammer it to close the outer housing?

Hi John I've cleaned/lubed the shaft on my ZB starter but the bendix is getting lazy and won't always return.. is there a return spring inside that may need replacing maybe ? Thanks Ian

Sorry John but you've let me down this time man. With a workshop like yours, you should be quite capable of making a tool for opening up the M35G. I asked my local steel workshop to make up a G-clamp style tool with a fork on one end (to compress the spring), and a sharp point on the other end (to connect with the shaft), tightening up the device compresses the spring. This way, there is no chance of catching a flying tool with your teeth, or your eyeballs...

Is there ever a locking ring on the cog at the bottom (you said they can be hard to get off). Any tips to getting them off if they will not budge?

or even better, use a dedicated spring compressor.

Oem tools brand valve spring compressor did the job. Now to figure how to remove the clip holding the bendix to the shaft so I can renew bushes….

Always wondered why the MGTD was followed by the MGTF. What happened to "MGTE"?

Allegedly skipped the TE due to the difficulty in pronouncing 'TeeE' ...compared with 'TeeDee' and 'TeeEff'.
