An interesting video, here. I really like that new-style train at about 1:47. I remember the Underground well from my visits to London in the mid-late 1970s, while in the (U.S.) military service. I really appreciated the availability of the system to travel about the city to see various parts of it. Nothing like it in the U.S., really, as far as extensiveness, except perhaps for New York City. And my visits were well before there really was an 'Overground' or tram lines. Still not supposed to take pictures in the stations? I figured from all the KZbin videos of the 'tube' available that rule might have been relaxed. But I remember it well, in a sense, when I first visited London in 1976 I was admonished by a plainclothes officer at one station who strictly reminded me, 'no pictures'. I had no idea, and I don't remember seeing any signs posted about it back then. Guess it *is* still in effect, then, from what you stated in the video. But then how do so many people apparently get away with it? I would like to take a brief jaunt over again sometime to travel about London (and other parts of Britain), but for me that is out of the question due to the stupid epidemic and all its related restrictions now. Guess without a 'vaccine passport' I couidn't go much anywhere, anyway. Sad, *and a shame* . I don't doubt much has changed since my last trip in 1979, otherwise. By the way, you are so right about people who like to claim that the year 2000 was not the start of the 21st century!

I suspect many people here know this already, but the only reason why the Jubilee Line extension managed to open (just) in time for the 'Millennium' celebrations (such as they were) was because LU changed (hastily, in my view) the signalling system design back to (continuing) the old one already used on the remainder of the line. Thanks to that, it had to be then junked within 15 years or so at a huge cost to taxpayers. Apparently you can thank 'Two Jags' John Prescott for that decision.

I don't think you were wrong. The only possible exception might be Heathrow Terminal 5, but nobody should regard that as a line extension, since Heathrow is one place. Effectively, it is just a siding off the existing line. Any “line extension” must be to a new place, or have an intermediate station to count. And the tram, airway, or a Overground are not part of the Tube. Nor is the so-called Eliza-Crossrail-Purp line. And 2000 is the 20th Century, of course. No sackcloth or ashes, please.

That's a massive advancement for the people of Liverpool. That could and should happen in every other city in the UK. And we could have a rolling program of electrification too. After monday's adventures I actually attempted to use the tube today - although successful it could have been quicker, in part as I was hauling luggate. So Deepest South London To Moorgate - Straightforward no problems, up the two escalaters to the ticket hall via northern city line platforms area, noting to the deepest of the escalators descending staircase - presumably to the Elizabeth Line. Short walk around the ticket barriers to the H&C eastbound, and this Is where I think I missed a H&C as the next few on the indicator were circles or aldgates, went to Liverpool Street thinking of changing to Central Line, although no stairs I decided I didnt like the escalator descent with two heavy suitcases. Back to the Metropolitan Platform and STILL no H&C , after a total wait of 15mins eventually a Barking Service arrived, quite a few people boarded. Ontowards Mile End forgetting the station of Stepney Green adding to journey time but off at Mile End where I think I had just missed an Epping Central Line, but the one I got was short turning at Loughton. Now remember never to change at Loughton as it involves footbridges and so on so get off at Woodford, Eventually after another long wait an Epping Service arrived. Out at Theydon Bois for fun and games, after which , return journey, less laden but not much so, just catch a service going to Epping, Stay on train for return service to Stratford, the train waited a long time before setting off, but Stratford without incident, Jubilee straightforward to Canada Water, SLL ? ELL toward Clapham High Street just trundles around SE and South London, clatter down and up steps at Clapham High Stree / Clapham North, then the normal southbound Northern back to starting point. Just a tiring day, of course come crossrail and importantly lift access at more interchanges there should be some improvement and of course this is the longest delay to ones planned schedules.

@johnkeepin75273 жыл бұрын
@@RJSRdg Indeed. There are quite a few T5 improvement projects on the shelf. Years ago, I worked on one of them, which was one of the “southern link” ones. There is a a lot of ‘spare’ tunnelled space in T5 - behind the wall for another two platforms parallel to the existing two, from which the new line would bore out under the airport grounds, climb up then run parallel to the M25, then onto the Windsor branch facing east towards Staines. There would have been other tweaks at Twickenham, Richmond, and the former Waterloo International terminus. Never happened, but it will be on file somewhere. The other option in T5 would be to extend the existing track, underground towards West Drayton, climb out and join the GWML near West Drayton westbound, to create the possibility of through services (as long as they were short enough) to/from the west via Heathrow T5/T2-3. That didn’t happen either.

I’m sure the extension to Hayes will happen, if only because it would have been useful for me 20+ years ago and I’m sure Sadiq Khan wants to annoy me enough that I shout into a communication device….not sure “Sadiiiiiq!, Sadiiiiq!”.

And there was also the new parts of the overground
@Andrewjg_893 жыл бұрын
True. Was thinking if the London Overground could extend from Norwood Junction to East Croydon. And from Cricklewood or Brent Cross to Brentford via the newly electrified Dudding Hill Line and a new high level station at Harlesden and new station to serve Brentford Community Stadium (Brentford FC).

filming in Heathrow station is impossible I tried recently there’s always staff on the platforms for people who get lost so as soon as you get a camera or phone out they start walking over and telling you off and they keep glancing at you every so often it’s annoying even explaining I’m a student making a film for college doesn’t stop them which I am.

Getting picked up as a terrorist while filming? Tell you what I have done over the years to minimize such legal complications caused by fleabrained officers who watched too much "24" while growing to maturity... Get yourself a hardhat, a reflective vest, and some decent work boots, and march into the area you which to video, shooting handheld with a tablet while pretending to take notes, such as counting the lights that are not functioning in the station, monitors that are off color, etc. In the old days, we used to use a clipboard, but the principle remains the same. The psychology of this is knowing how coppers think (which is too often at a lower lever of intellectual horsepower than it should be). They function by the simple mental shortcut of looking for things that appear out-of-place. This does work some of the time, so it is how the average copper solves any crimes. So look like you belong in a category they understand and you should be alright. Another thing that works here in the U.S. (and might be duplicated on some level in London), is to carry my driving license, my Amtrak Partners In Security card - professionally laminated - and my American Civil Liberties Union card all together, so I hand the officer all three at once. That functions as a "this is who I am, the railroad thinks this is fine, and I know enough about my rights to be more trouble to mess with then you want."

Any form of photo ID on a lanyard hanging around the neck works too! If the lanyard says “staff” or is rainbow coloured helps…

I don't think the Dome was a massive flop in reality, only in the opinion pieces of certain elements of the press.
