Here, in west Texas, the cotton farmers use underground watering. Might be a good idea for y’all for the garden, bury a drip system about 9-12 inches under the surface. You’d get better usage and less evaporation, water right at the roots. If direct sowing you of course have to top water, which could be done with a top drip system maybe.

Derek don’t throw the baby out with the bath. Green tomatoes can be ground to a pulp and added to soups and stews. Let some of all of the seeds dry out so you will have seeds ready for planting. You can pickle green tomatoes and add the juice to hearty vegetables. Even marigold will reseed and make new flowers. If something’s too mushy the pigs will enjoy it so all is not lost. Dry what you can for new seeds for planting for a fresh new crop. Seeds might become more expensive so use what you got. I had good volunteer tomatoes and turnips but you got to get those and mix with mustards while the turnips are young. Take care.

Darren --- YES on the HOT compost: in similar climates in Europe (France, Italy, Greece) and the Middle East, people build the animal barns such that they share a wall with the home, and pitch the hot compost near that wall to conserve heat during the winter. Fresh bedding is added on top. I've never tried it, but you could try it, piling the hot stuff around and on the igloos. Check their skin for mites... I don't know when pigs go through their heat cycle and give birth - but I do know piglets are very sensitive to cold, especially right after they are born. Good luck with your wheelbarrow farm ; )

That soap you’re making is so healthy for skin and hair as well. It doesn’t have all of those chemically manufactured ingredients in it and you will feel clean and fresh and can the skin can breathe without hurrying to lotion up.

Wood mulch, you need to cover your soil to keep the roots cooler and hold what ever little moisture you get. Tree services will give it away for free. It eventually breaks down and becomes soil. It’s the only way that we can have a garden in these high temps, no rain summers! I have been adding mulch to my garden and food forest for 5 yrs now and it just gets better every yr. Also No more dirt blowing, no more mud.

The sunset was beautiful, 50 degrees is a veritable heat wave for us Scottish people lol... A time for digging out that solitary pair of shorts we own 😂 It is 10 degrees here and cold enough to make my hair stand on end without the warmth that goat hair could provide, it's on with the woollen sweaters and fleeces. All the animals are happy and content and Crystal you are beaming with pride like an expectant parent. No wonder all the does are lying down relaxing and chilling out... Your soaps are so gorgeous!!! WAY TO GO!!! I am going to start making soap for myself. After using homemade soap from a local maker, I cannot turn back to store made. I grow my own mint, golden rod and nettle grows wild in my backyard, and when I decided that I was going to harvest for it to dry for using in my soap... it snowed. Now it's almost gone, I am going to harvest tomorrow. Can't wait for them dry and grind them up for pigments and additives in my soaps.

I'm in rural northern NV, in a valley surrounded by mountain ranges, and for the last 3 years, my husband's mission has been to grow peppers in our gardens. Ask me if we've gotten a SINGLE edible pepper ONCE in three years. We can grow squash and zucchini like CRAZY, even tomatoes are decent if we get a "bushy" variety, but peppers? We can get pretty pepper PLANTS, but they either never even try to "head off" into a pepper, or we get these little weird looking ones that fall off within days.

I just have to say that the red wigglies can freeze and be unfrozen and still be good. It used to amaze the people from lower elevations when it happened after we sold them to them so we would tell them in advanced. I live at almost 9K feet. It was my summer income as a teenager. My great-grandparents had a ranch where they raised red wigglies so you could call it a family business. hahaha

I used food grade silicone gel rubbed on face to prevent the scauld it’s great to keep them wet proof!! It’s available at kitchen supply stores ... it’s used for a lubricant or seal on like slushy makers !! I have a store not far away but I bet Amazon has it lol 😂

Chickens are notorious for not laying well when it is cold. Feeding them warm feed (heated mash) will help keep them laying better during colder weather. My hubby would feed a mash of fish and oatmeal to his and had an abundance through the whole winter in Northern MT.
