22. WARAQAH IBN NAWFAL [00:01] Beginning and spread of the revelation Rasulullah ﷺ has now received the wahi, a historic moment you can't pay enough respect and attention to as it revealed the purpose of your creation. This revelation is a mercy from our creator because even if Quran hadn't been revealed, we would still be responsible to recognize Allah as the creator as there are enough signs around us. Even during the lifetime of Prophet ﷺ, the message of Islam left the Arabian peninsula with sahaba traveling to different parts of the world such as Sa'ad Ibn Abi Waqas going to China. You will find many graves of the sahaba in parts of Europe, Africa, Asia and so on. [02:19] Khadija RA comforts Prophet ﷺ Rasulullah ﷺ goes back to Khadija RA and says "Zami luni, zami luni- cover me." Most of us live ordinary lives so we not be able to related but the greatness and stress of a task can make a person shiver like this. Here Rasulullah ﷺ has just seen Jibreel AS in his real form and is starting to understand the task he's been given. Khadija RA consoles and advises him. [03:27] Ayat from Surah Al-Muzzammil (73) are revealed Although there's some khilaf of the ulema when these were exactly revealed but most common opinion is that 73:1 and 73:2 were revealed around this time and Surah 74:1 and 74:2 a little later. يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلْمُزَّمِّلُ قُمِ ٱلَّيْلَ إِلَّا قَلِيلًا - Oh you wrapped in clothes, stand all night in prayer except a little (73:1, 73:2) يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلْمُدَّثِّرُقُمْ فَأَنذِرْ - Oh you covered up, arise and warn (74:1, 74:2) [04:06] Hikmah behind staged revelation (نَزَّلَ) of the Quran upon Prophet ﷺ Hikmah of Allah سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى revealing the Quran in a staged manner (نَزَّلَ) has to do with asbabun nuzul (circumstances/context of revelation). If Quran had been revealed in one go (أَنزَلَ) we would have never understood the context, we wouldn't know which ayat are about say Jihad, property, inheritance, etc. Also remember that Prophet ﷺ is still a human being, getting this revealed in one go would've been very difficult for him as this is Kalamullah, this is not something light. [05:43] Responsibility given to Prophet ﷺ in 73:1, 73:2 (and by extension a Muslim) These ayat give us a beautiful understanding of what the responsibility of the Muslim, the mu'min, the da'ee is in the day and night. The first two ayat of 73 tell us to stand in the night except a little as this is the fuel for someone who is striving in the way of Allah, for a mujahid doing Allah's work. And the ayat of 74 give us the responsibility in the day of calling people to Allah, warning them of the day of judgement and reminding them of the purpose of their lives. [07:04] Woman's role in the cause of da'wah As discussed previously, Khadija RA comforted Prophet ﷺ and that is a beautiful example for our sisters to follow today in how to support the da'wah. We should remember that Khadija RA was instrumental in the spread of Prophet ﷺ's da'wah. She would encourage and comfort Prophet ﷺ. A man outside puts a tough face but looks for comfort at home, this is where he opens his heart and the wife is that covering (libas) for him as he is for her. [08:56] Monotheists looking for the truth (Waraqah Ibn Nawfal and others) Khadija RA recommends they visit Waraqah Ibn Nawfal who is her cousin. As mentioned in Fath Al Bari by Ibn Hajr Asqalani, his full name is Waraqah Ibn Nawfal Ibn Asad Ibn Abdul Uzza. Per many ahadith, he and some other people were not satisfied with the shirk happening in Makkah as they saw it to be wrong. This was due to their fitrah (previous lectures). Others with him per a Hadith by Prophet ﷺ were Ubayd Allah Ibn Jahsh, Quss Ibn Saidah, Zayd Ibn Amr and Uthman Ibn Huwairith. Some people try to put others in this same category such as parents of Prophet ﷺ, Abu Lahab etc out of their ghulu (exaggeration) or ta'assub (prejudice) but this is wrong. [11:39] Monotheists visit a Jewish rabbi / Reasons why people deny the truth Waraqah Ibn Nawfal and others went to Shaam which was considered the spiritual capital of that time as many Christians and Jews lived in that area. Zayd Ibn Amr who was their leader (mentioned in the last lecture) inquired about who the people of knowledge were and they were directed to a Rabbi. They asked the Rabbi on how to join his religion as they liked the idea of worshipping a creator but this Rabbi was honest and said they couldn't enter his religion without inviting the wrath of Allah (because the religion had been corrupted). This is similar to what we find today. Many people know that they're upon falsehood, there are things such as nationalism, "we are the chosen people", communal pressure that hold people back from the truth. Even when they're shown clear contradictions in their book they are not willing to accept the truth. This is because hidaya (guidance) is only from Allah. Some people just want to be in the circle that they're in and don't want to see the truth. [15:10] Religion of Hanif (methodology of Abraham AS) Waraqah Ibn Nawful and other monotheists now did not know what to do. So the Rabbi told them to stick to the religion of Hanif (not to be confused with Hanifi madhab), which is the religion of Abraham AS. Hanif refers to the methodology of Abraham AS which was tawheed, to believe in the oneness of Allah. [16:03] Monotheists visit Christians in search of the truth The group now visits the Christians who tell them the same thing that today our people have changed the religion so much that you can't enter it without inviting the wrath of Allah سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى. The group goes back to Makkah with some ideas. Waraqah Ibn Nawful took back a lot of the teachings of Isa Ibn Marriam but in the correct way meaning he did not worship Jesus PBUH but worshipped Allah alone. While others including Ubayd Allah Ibn Jahsh and Zayd Ibn Amr stuck to just worshipping Allah based upon deen-ul-Hanif. So we know (with evidences discussed later) that these were the people of Jannah because they did not make shirk. [17:32] Rasulullah ﷺ speaks to Waraqah Ibn Nawful Rasulullah ﷺ and Khadija RA go to Waraqah Ibn Nawful who is very well read, multi-lingual and is very old at this time. Rasulullah ﷺ tells him everything that had happened. Waraqah Ibn Nawful tells him that, "Oh son of my brother (a term of endearment), this is Namoos (another name of Jibreel AS). This is the same angel that Allah سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى sent to Musa AS. I wish I was young because no body has come with such a message except that his people have turned against him." Just as we see Musa AS was betrayed by Bani Israel so many times as well as Isa AS. Prophet ﷺ was shocked by this because he was loved by his people, he had no quarrels with anyone, he was after all the one who was chosen by them to place the Hajre-Aswad.

[21:24] You can't please everyone There are some people in our ummah who try to please everyone at the expense of angering Allah such as MTJ (a Pakistani scholar) who goes to all the conferences of bid'ah and instead of correcting their aqeeda, he praises them. Remember that the ones that are loved by Allah are the ones who speak the truth no matter what. Sufyan ath Thawri who was an earlier imma was told of a man who was loved by everyone. He said that if that's the case then he's a man who's never spoken the truth. When you speak the truth Allah and mu'minoon will love you but the kuffar, the munafiqoon, the mushrikoon will hate you and they are the majority. [24:12] Was Waraqah Ibn Nawful a sahabi? We know Waraqah Ibn Nawful was from the people of fitrah but was he a sahabi, meaning did he bring Iman in the message of Rasulullah ﷺ to the level that he can be considered from the sahabi? There's a khilaaf (disagreement) of ulema on this. Imam Al Tabari, Al Baghawi, Ibn Kani', Ibn Uthaymeen, Saleh Al-Fawzan and others took him to be from the sahaba. But the majority of ulema (thought to be more correct an opinion) like Ibn Kathir in Bidaya wa Nihaya, Imam Ad Dhahabi in Siyar A'lam al-Nubala, Ibn Hajar Asqalani in Al-Isabah said he was from ahlul-fitrah but not from the sahaba because at this time although he did not make shirk and said he would support Rasulullah ﷺ but died very early before knowing the risala of Rasulullah ﷺ. But no doubt he's from the people of Jannah based on a Hadith narrated by Aisha RA where Rasulullah ﷺ said he saw him in his dream wearing white because if he were from the people of fire, he would not be wearing white. This is something scholars who specialize in interpreting dreams use as evidence as well. In another Hadith, Rasulullah ﷺ said not to curse Waraqah Ibn Nawful for verily I saw him he has a Jannah, and in another riwaya two Jannah. So these ahadith tell us that no doubt Waraqah Ibn Nawful is in Jannah. [27:11] New form of bid'ah at funerals We do not guarantee Jannah except for those who we have evidence for. The same is true for Jahannam. Nowadays another form of bid'ah is people making speeches at a funeral where they say I knew this guy, he's from the people of Heaven. Really, how do you know? That is not for us to know or decide, only Allah knows. [28:13] Appearances can be deceiving: Waraqah Ibn Nawful vs Abu Amir Al-Fasiq Waraqah Ibn Nawful was a person of zuhad. He was a zahid which means that he was a person who did not love this dunya but his heart was attached to the akhira. He was trying to follow the message of Isa AS. Another person named Abu Amir (more on him in Madani period) was also known as a zahid, trying to follow the message of Isa AS but he's from the people of naar (fire). Why is such the case when both of them were outwardly the same, both of them were praised for their good character, both detached from this world trying to follow the true message? That is because Waraqah Ibn Nawful upon seeing the truth accepted it. Even though he was a scholar of many languages and knew the scriptures, he did not have kibar (pride) and was able to suppress his nafs (desire) in accepting the truth (that the wahi did not come to him but to Rasulullah ﷺ). Where as Abu Ami Al Fasiq being a person of kibar questioned why Allah had chosen Prophet ﷺ and fought him and the reason why he's from the people of the naar. Similarly Khalid Ibn Walid RA who no doubt was the most qualified accepted Abu Ubaidah Ibn al-Jarrah as the leader when ordered by Omar RA. So the lesson to take away is that don't go by appearances. Only Allah knows what is in our hearts and He chooses to grant anyone anything He wants. We see this disease in our Ummah today too where people question and are jealous if someone else achieves something that we thought we deserved for ourselves. [32:36] Refuting the claim that Waraqah Ibn Nawful wrote the Quran Many Christians, Jews, atheists believe that Waraqah Ibn Nawful wrote the Quran. Even though Waraqah Ibn Nawful was well read and knew many scriptures, there is no evidence that he wrote any books or that he was a poet. We also know from the consensus of both Muslim and non-Muslim historians that he died before a single surah was ever completely revealed. And that is why many did not even consider him a sahaba. What is correct is that he only heard about ٱقْرَأْ بِٱسْمِ رَبِّكَ ٱلَّذِى خَلَقَ. Secondly, if he wrote it why wouldn't he take credit for it? [34:35] Break in the revelation and its' hikmah Now a period began where Rasulullah ﷺ did not receive any revelation. The most correct opinion is that it was only a few days, other weak opinions include 6 months and 3 years. There was a hikmah of Allah سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى here. Firstly, it was not easy physically. Some sahaba reported the physical difficult Rasulullah ﷺ had when the wahi would be revealed. Once his head was in a sahabi's lap and it got so hot while a wahi was coming down that the sahaba felt like his own leg would end up burning or his own legs would break from the pressure he had. Secondly, it was to develop the love of Rasulullah ﷺ for the wahi. We also see this from the sunnah of the sahaba where they did not give lectures daily, rather it was once or twice a week. You will see students dozing off in lectures today where they're being given daily. [37:50] Rasulullah ﷺ's condition upon the break in revelation and a weak Hadith related to it Rasulullah ﷺ at this time became very anxious. This is because in the beginning when you realize the big responsibility given to you, you become afraid. But after you realize the benefits of this, or what it means for mankind you become anxious to do it. Rasulullah ﷺ now wanted to go forward with this but with no wahi coming, he started to contemplate jumping off a mountain per a weak Hadith. Even if this were a strong Hadith, Rasulullah ﷺ as a human being is going through an internal struggle, and again this is kalamullah, this is not something ordinary. [38:57] Wahi begins again, brief discussion of Al-Muddaththir (74) After a while, the wahi begins again as is reported in a Hadith by Jabir RA mafru' from Rasulullah ﷺ, "I saw Jibreel AS (in his actual form) in the sky sitting in the chair and then he revealed to me يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلْمُدَّثِّرُ قُمْ فَأَنذِرْ." And so on. Look at the message and the importance of da'wah. Ayah 1. Arise and warn ( قُمْ فَأَنذِرْ) - This is what we need to do. Today everybody wants to just get along, they want to hold interfaith meetings, hold hands and hug but what about warning people, warning about the day of judgement that without a doubt is coming near, warn them of making shirk. Da'wah is not just because we want to grow our community but we don't want people to go to the fire. Ayah 2. Revere your Lord ( وَرَبَّكَ فَكَبِّرْ) - What do you want to call towards? Your Rab, to praise him, to worship him alone. Don't call them to yourself, to impress them with how many degrees you have but call them towards Allah. Ayah 3. Purify your garments (وَثِيَابَكَ فَطَهِّرْ) - ثِيَابَ here doesn't only mean libas (clothing) which no doubt is important to have clean clothes, but Ibn Qayyin Jawziyyah here took this to mean to cleanse your heart as well. This was a statement of the Arab that meant to clean your heart from riya (showing off), from hasad (jealousy), from shirk, from bid'ah, from being a coward, from bukhal etc. Ayah 7. And for your Rab, be patient (وَلِرَبِّكَ فَٱصْبِرْ)- With all this, don't forget about being patient in the mission that you have. [42:22] Three ways in which Quran was revealed 1. Directly from Jibreel AS in 2 ways: Either by appearing in his actual or human form (we have some ahadith where even sahaba saw Jibreel AS in his human form) or not being visibly seen but bringing wahi upon the heart of Rasulullah ﷺ 2. Direct dreams from Allah سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى. We know that dreams of the Prophets are a part of wahi. If the sahaba saw a dream and Prophet ﷺ confirmed it, then that's a hujjah. If not, then it is not considered a hujjah. It is important to note that the dreams of regular humans are not wahi and we can not derive ahkam from it. 3. Allah سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى spoke directly to the Prophet ﷺ, like on Isra' wal Mi'raj [44:44] Components of revelation Wahi doesn't only mean what is in the Quran. There were many ahadith that Jibreel AS brought to the Prophet ﷺ with ahkam in it which we don't find in the Quran but they are preserved in the ahadith.

It is not permissible to name children after chapters in the Qur’ān as the great scholar Al-Hāfidh Ibn al-Qayyim also said: It is prohibited to name children the name Quran or any chapter name such as Tāhā or Yāsīn.
