Hillary! Was such a nice treat to see your video show up today! Do enjoy you so much. Speaking of things not to spend money on needlessly, my sister and how she entertains her grandsons (3 and 5) comes to mind. The boys have toys GALORE at home, including huge motorized vehicles of all sorts. When sis has them, her motto is " don't need to spend money to entertain children". Taking them to the library, the zoo, the local gardens, to the park, to church, the beach, just long meandering rides thru town, or maybe even a very special trip to the dollar store with each boy being treated to a single "treasure" they decide on. And always with snacks and drinks in a cooler in the car. The boys love these outings with her and she so enjoys just spending time and creating memories with them. Win-Win all around. Cost: almost zero. Looking forward to your next chat, Hillary! Til, stay warm and take care. Barb

On the online shopping, I now leave things in the cart but wait at least day before actually buying anything. That helps clarify what I actually need (like food and medicine)

I no longer buy accessories like scarves and jewelry. I'm a creature of habit and wear the same jewelry all the time. The pieces are sentimental. I rarely buy books because I can get them at my library or inter-library loan. I don't buy regular décor or holiday décor. Thanks for a great video. It was nice to see you this morning!

I am so enjoying watching you videos again. You were talking about presents for made up holidays. I recently became aware of an internet trend (tictoc maybe) of pushing elaborate collections of gifts for kids/friends - a "Boo Basket" of stuff at Halloween, a "Brrr Basket" when the weather turns cold," etc. It's like unnecessary gifting on steroids! My no buy list includes craft supplies (because I am trying to use up the mountain of stuff I already own) and books because having an in-home "library" had become more of a status symbol that I was not proud to perpetuate. Now I get more of a rush out of looking at the long list of items I have borrowed from the library over the year. That's my new status symbol to myself.

You are so right. I’m 66 years old. My husband and I have been practicing these common sense lifestyle choices for 45 years. Life changing in a financially positive way. Not always understood or accepted by many. (One must have a clear understanding of the goals and not be a slave to peer pressure) Maybe I should be thanking my parents for the tools they taught me to graciously refuse the cultural pressures of my youth. Thanks mom and dad.

Hillary, I just discovered you and laughed along with you. “Baskets all over my house will make it look like a cottage”…….or as I have discovered at a wise 72 years young….it will still look like your house, but with a whole lot of baskets!! I love them, for some organization, but like anything else, they can become clutter. Can’t wait to see more of your humorous, practical living ideas. Glad to have found you❤😊

I donated the majority of my basket collection to local farms I support each year that go to farm markets and festivals to sell. They were all just sitting in a pike in my basement, and it made me feel good to know they would be used in the future. I did keep a fee for harvesting the garden and flowers, but literally gave away dozens (Yes plural), lol

So well said as always Hillary and I am in total agreement with your dislike of all these invented holidays to sell stuff. I used to buy a couple of house improvement magazines a month several years ago. Not cheap and full of dream items and adverts for things you could not afford or not your real style. Gave them up to save the money and stress. I can now actually view them free on the library website if I wish but that season of life has moved on.

Gift giving is my nightmare, oh the expectation is too much. I've started to just give nice little things to friends & family throughout the year: a homemade soda bread, a homemade cake or a plant that I've potted up from my own plants (spider plants are the best!). I just find the over buying of tack too much and do friends & family really want/need more 'stuff'!

I am so guilty of being a “future crafter”! I get an idea, buy the things, then somehow I don’t do it. So, the new rule is finish what I have and THEN if I want to continue I will allow myself to buy something. Also there are so many ways to thrift craft supplies. They don’t have to be the newest and greatest. And while I don’t journal, I am addicted to journals! lol. My daughters and I have a running joke about having 20 journals and writing in none of them. You know….maybe I can use one to write down my “looking for” clearance list! 😂

I just came across your channel today I absolutely love your energy. My favorite piece that you talked about was having the dunks iced coffee I was exactly the same way. It became an addiction for me just to have that cup in my hand so I started especially in the summer saving the coffee cup and filling it with ice water and that is how I broke my obsession / addiction to Dunkin donuts.

2 pairs of boots (snow and suede) , black shoes, brown shoes, Birkenstocks (sandals and clogs-20+years old), tennis shoes, black fancy shoes. The tennis shoes need replacing fairly frequently, the others last. I decided many years ago to only wear black and brown shoes and that has simplified everything,

I have 12 pairs of shoes BUT I have a good excuse. I have rather small feet with high arches, so finding comfortable shoes that actually fit is rather difficult. So when I do find some shoes that actually work, I buy more than one pair at a time. In the long run, it saves me a lot of time, stress, and money to shop for shoes that way. So right now I have three pairs of the exact same sneakers, two of the same boots, etc. And they do get worn. It just means I don't have to hunt for shoes for probably another...7-10 years? ^_^

I have waaaaay too many shoes, but almost none of them are bought new, and I use a lot of sneakers (errands, exercise and grubby for outside work). Plus my ADHD is so bad that I misplace my shoes all the time, and I don't have the time or energy to track down where I hid them, so a few extra pairs help me stress out less.
@erindixon2877
@erindixon2877 9 күн бұрын
The best way to not misplace shoes, is to get an open shoe shelf system that sits near where you take off your shoes. My daughter has adhd and she finally broke down last year and bought a tiered shoe shelf from Amazon that’s in her coat closet. Now she takes off her shoes when she gets home and puts them on the shelf. It’s slowed her habit of thinking she needs new shoes for an event because she can just look at the shelves and see what she already has.

Trying to count shoes without getting up - 1 winter boots, 2 sneakers, 2 work shoes (1 for dark clothes, 1 for light clothes) 2 work sandals (1 dark, 1 light), 1 black loafers for casual wear, 1 sandal for casual wear, 1 "slippers" that can pass for shoes without anyone knowing they are slippers and 1 regular slippers. So - 11.

All that cheap tat eventually has to go somewhere. People need to wake up and think about the amount of stuff this planet has to dispose of! What many people don’t realise, including all the influencers who constantly promote these products, is that it isn’t about making our lives better, it’s about making these big companies RICHER…don’t fall for it! If we choose to just stick to the main holidays and not falling for all these consumerist big business invented events, we’ll have more cash in our pockets and won’t be building wealth for the super rich! Lovely to see you 😊😊

Hi Bonita!! You could go across the border into Mexico and get your glasses for 1/2 the price you pay in the states. My late husband had horrible eye site and we spent almost $800 per pair in the US. We went to an amazing optometrist in Mazatlan MX and he walked out with TWO pairs of the best glasses he ever had for around $300. We went there yearly. He also said it was the most thorough eye exam he had ever had in his life and he was over 60 and wore glasses since he was about 4 years old. When he was about 62, he had his cataracts removed and got lasik surgery at the same time. He passed away at 67 and I never did get used to seeing him without glasses. lol
