Yup. I had gotten a bad cold and it left me talking like Froggy from the Little Rascals. Dr. scoped my throat, said a vocal chord was paralyzed and it will hopefully come back on its own. Strained to talk for 6 months, then all of a sudden the vocal chord started working. Fortunately I wasn't singing for a living.

The intensely scary and horrifying amount of Time spent going from one doctor to the next to find out what the hell is causing this defect is disturbing in itself. Tom was and still is one of the greatest singers of the wonderfully insane late 80’s and 90’s. His voice was impeccable, and they still remain one of my few favorite bands. This guy was also absolutely beautiful during this time. Those lips and smile were almost impossible to comprehend. There is one scene in the music video Gypsy Road, where he is smiling, and it’s unfathomable to me as I see that realistic moment of gorgeousness. I’m elated he beat this condition into the ground.

I can still remimber hearing Night Songs for the 1st time and thinking how is he getting that sound. There was no internet in those days. you had to listen over and over, I had alot of good times playing Tom's songs. I Never met him but he changed my life for the better, these guys worked their butt's off to get were they were in the 80's. Never in the history of rock has there been such a back-lash against the bands. They lost their glory and legacy. Which was not fair and I lived that era, I was 15 in 1990 and we liked everything from the 70's to grunde. if it rocked it was cool. When grunde hit we just thought great new bands, new music. We didnt think it was going to destroy the past.

I've never heard Tom's natural speaking voice in all my years as a fan. He sounds like a very intelligent individual to me. So sad to have heard of his vocal problems all those years ago. Love his work.

Let me end my statement with this. I love his writing and singing and performances. He gave it all and even more. It's too bad he had to deal with it, but he seems to have death with it and moved on and still performing today. All the best to Tom.

I have so much sympathy for what he went through. I had a bad cold that messed up my left ear. For six years I’ve had a constant shrieking on the left side. And to make it extra fun, I hear notes about ¼ tone flatter than in the right ear. F-ing viruses.

I noticed something happening with his voice in the Russia concert in '89. Something the was subtle, but you can tell that his voice was struggling near the end of the set. Granted that because of his singing style that would tend to happen, but there was something in his eyes or mannerisms that gave me the clue. Now I find out all these years later that is was starting to affect him back then.aybe it just started, but it was a toll on him back then, and he knew it.
