Ah, but a man's reach should exceed his grasp, Or what's a heaven for? - Robert Browning..... Of course the 22-year-old may not have the power needed for Wagner, but how magnificent it is to see the striving so brilliantly proceeding. Thank you for the manifold joys you bring!

It is very rare to hear such a "young Dutchman", who, as desperate as he is by his past and his failures, nevertheless retains the hope of a possible redemption. Sly's beautiful and clear voice expresses this wonderfully. At his age, it's a performance. Too bad the air is not complete. Thanks anyway for sharing.

I can't help but feel some kinship with 22 year old Philippe Sly. I'm 24 years old, commencing my first year of a bachelor of music degree. One of my audition pieces was "Titurel, der fromme Held" from Parsifal. Why my teacher let me do it I'll never know.

It would be unfair to compare him to Hans Hotter in, say, the 1944 broadcast of Dutchman; Hotter was in his prime and early 40's, but Sly has the potential to have a major career. Listen to his Giovanni (complete) from France. This being a live performance the balance between the orchestra and the soloist is not what it would be in an studio performance or an stage performance. This performance has put many young singers on hold; one can only hope that during this hiatus the artists will have matured. Sly certainly has the potential to have a major international career.

Such a pity that the mic couldn't contain the sound. It was a historical moment. Please, do go into Wagner, slowly. SLOWLY. Best wishes from Poland!

….I hope he can grow on that. It requires strict discipline and careful role planing. If he tries too much too early Mr. Sly will disappear longer than seven years…. All the best!

Sing at the center of each note, as Callas said. I hope you have read her master classes. Study the score mercilessly. Serafin told Callas that she would find everything she wanted to know in the score (there is a wonderful book about Callas in Greece). You have no natural tension in your voice, which is rare and good. There is a world in each note. Also, remember that Wagner is an Italian composer--not Italian enough, according to his nemesis Nietzsche (if you're going to stick with Wagner, read Nietzsche contra Wagner). You should try Bartok's Bluebeard. You might also find a partner and do Brahms' 49 folksongs. They are amazingly difficult to do well. Along with lieder, why not venture far afield and try melodies by Chabrier--you'll still be close to Germany, since he is the French Schubert. Also, Debussy's songs would be good for you--Debussy matures the voice, whether it wants to mature or not; he is too sophisticated to be resisted. And then, of course, there are those late vocal pieces by Rossini, who brought Schubert's aesthetic into French music. If you don't play the piano, you should--every singer should. Begin with something difficult--Rossini's "sins of old age," which are really penance for his youth. And read Stendhal's biography of Rossini! Stendhal wrote an opera without music, the Charterhouse of Parma, which is part opera seria, part opera buffa, and part rescue opera. Remember: you still want to be singing professionally when you are 70, so you have to become widely cultured. This will allow you to become wily and overcome desertions from your voice over time. Then people won't give a damn about your age! What about your voice. Check it with a doctor, find out all about its physical properties. You don't want hernias. And you don't want cancer of the larynx or pharynx. These are occupational risks.

If Herbert von Karajan said Mirella Freni was ideal for Aida, then he could have conducted Mr Sly in Flying Dutchman. Not for a house with 3,000 seats, but one like La Fenice.

We’re not talking about football here , where at 22 what is required is physical strength, agility and perception of the game. Opera, save in rare cases, requires maturity of the voice , not merely technique but actual physical maturity. This video reveals a very gutsy effort by an immature voice to sing like a guy twice his age. It presages all that wonder which is to come. An absolute capital effort. One glimpses a star in the making. A true Rolls Royce of a voice, with all the strength and agility of that car , but still developing in this performance of Wagner. PS I would say Philippe at that age was a star on the football field.

Do you think it wise to attempt Wagner at such a young age? Common wisdom advises waiting a few decades lest you ruin your instrument.
@Alexander.Christian-06123 жыл бұрын

Sorry. You are a light baritone. You don`t have the voice to sing the dramatic parts of Wagner. Better you sing Wolfram.
