Regarding a good wood filler. Years ago,when i was a much younger man we mixed Plaster of Paris with the proper Japan color,to darken the pores.Then we sanded all this down to the wood.Works great but it is work,lots of work and hark work too.Just tossing this out there.This was the accepted filler that was used for years upon years.Good luck.

Jerry, when you asked the other day I suggested you use pumice and shellac. I doubt you ever used that. When done properly it’s the best wood filler you can find. No need for 21th century technology when the old stuff is the best. 😉

Used this on my one build. Definitely rt equires technique but seemed too work fine on sepeele. Not a one step process for a novice. Besides, Shellac is a good sealer and base coat for a lot of finishes.

Love the videos, love you Jerry! Thing about wood I love, is it resists my intentions from start to finish because it's got its own integrity, and to work with it, sharp tools and understanding is required. Filling pores just gonna be a 3 or 4 step process, no matter what you use, but, I'm gonna read all the comments and hope to learn I'm wrong. (happens all the time :D) BTW, watching you and others do things I do, but differently, before I go to work makes me happier to be free to do my own work my own way, without anybody telling me how or what to do or think. Hope I don't come across as other than just telling you how I think. Also, my Gramma used to say "It's six to one, half a dozen to the other" all the time, so do I. Thanks again!

I think this is the first time I've seen anyone freehand a dovetail joint. Jerry you are truly an animal, respect brother. I have ragged aquacoat filler up one side and down the other. I think I even threw it out on camera. It was my own Padauk guitar I was using it on. Hate it! I would have and may have said that Timbermate is the best most sandable product I have used. But it still takes two to three applications. And like you said with all the things we can do now it just seems like someone could develop a filler that works the first time. I've Zpoxy as well with ok results but many applications. I just got some Simtec easy sanding sealer and I'm liking it a lot as a filler-sealer. I will be sharing results in a video soon Please stand by!

When I do router work ona small end like that, I use a sort of extension table made from some wood scraps well fastened to the long axis of the work piece with clamps. The added “table surface” adds immensely to stability of the router base.

I love the way you deal with accuracy when you are building a guitar I know it doesnt have to be that close on the rough in but the finished product when it comes to guitars does have to be accurate if you want the quality so you try to be as accurate as possible with the rough in so it comes out perfect as far as man is concerned when its finished

Really enjoying this guitar build series! Amazing woodworking skil ! You make carving a neck look easy! Cant wait to see how you get that one degree angle on the neck. I don't know but maybe the wood grain pores shouldn't be covered because that way the wood can breath and dry out over time and then the guitar will sound better with age? Don't know just thinking out load. Thank you for sharing your knowledge, I know its not easy shooting these videos and putting them together.

I'm of the same mind you are with the lack of quality pore fillers, Jerry. I saw a guy on a builder's forum once using egg whites and sanding dust and thought that might be worth trying, but I haven't yet. @danawheeler65176 жыл бұрын
I think any filler that cures by evaporation will shrink and require multiple applications. So that leads you to resin products like epoxy that cure by chemical reaction and fill pores easier. Of course that may have longer cure times and cleanup issues. Life is trade offs.

I don't think there's a grain filler on the planet that will fill the grain in one coating Jerry to be honest. I commented previously that I use Zpoxy finishing resin and it will fill your grain - it will however take 2 or 3 applications to do so. Robbie O'Brien has just uploaded a video on how he uses Zpoxy so it might be worth checking that out. It is also much harder to sand than the Aquacoat you used here. I'll follow your progress with interest and all the best from Scotland!

While thinking about those pores and filling them. Wouldn't a slow curing CA glue work? Just pour the deal and spread it with a credit card or pick? I mean, if you want to veneer the headstock, apply to said piece before shaping and gluing, sand it down until its smooth and nice and it would work ( I suppose?).

Jerry. Again, you say it’s sad we can’t come up with a better filler. I wasn’t going to comment on any of this until your very last statement. Until you try the SIMTEC product, you really shouldn’t say that they aren’t worth a darn. It works perfectly and is simple to use. It’s there, if you decide not to use it, that’s your issue. Oh, by the way, Dane Nichols is now using it, look what he says about it...
@RosaStringWorks6 жыл бұрын
So you're saying it will fill in one application? I've searched eBay and Amazon and can't find it. I search Google and found a gallon of something called simtec sanding sealer and it's almost $100. Quite a bit to spend on a test when I'm not sure it's going to work any better than the dozens of other products I've tried. Do you have a link to what you're referring to?
@budandbean16 жыл бұрын
You can’t get it from Amazon or EBay that I know of. It’s available only on their site. Http://www.simteccoatings.com . If you are interested in watching someone use it, Texas Toast Guitars has been doing a complete set of finishing videos on their KZbin channel. You can see the 28x50 EZ Sanding Sealer in action there if you like. I’ve only purchased it in gallons and only asked about gallons but It seems to me they had smaller amounts, all you have to do is call them and ask.

By the way, no I didn’t mean to say you would be done in one application, I’ve gotten it to fill in one application but then after sanding to level it, you will need to hit it with another application. Here is the Texas Toast video, it might explain more: kzbin.info/www/bejne/qIqTh3uYfZl6jK8

Your job is to invent a filler formula that fills in one application. Good luck to you.
@buckhorncortez6 жыл бұрын
You're over working the filler. I just did a 28 x42 inch walnut table top with ONE coat of wood filler - all of the grain is filled. You need to figure out the best direction for the filler - I use 90 degrees to the grain for most wood. But, for the wood you're using 45 degrees might be better. For a small area like you were doing - put the filler on a bit heavier and just go across the wood one or two times. The more you work the filler, the more you'll pull it back out of the grain. For the walnut table top, I went 90 degrees to the grain and then worked the filler in with burlap in a circular motion. You need to have a visible coating of filler on the wood so that you're sanding throught the filler to the wood's surface. If you're using a water-based wood filler, you need to wet the wood surface first and let it dry - then sand to 240 before filling. If you don't do that, the wood will be opening up and expanding due to the water in the wood filler - making the grain larger. By constantly fiddling with the filler and trying to get it as thin as possible, you're defeating the purpose of the filler by pulling it back out of the wood pores. Honesly, I'd love to visit your shop and show you how to use wood filler. I'm betting you'd say, "Well, that was easy."
@hulaguitar6 жыл бұрын
Seems like the pick was a good applicator but not so good as a squeegee. If you used a larger edged tool like a credit card in one pass at 45degrees it might work better.
