Just picked up a Rossi RS22M a couple of weeks ago and I will be going way down south to a friend's property near Temecula, CA were he has 20 acres with rifle ranges from 100 yards to 600 yards in increments of 100 yards. We will be shooting my my Rossi RS22M, Tan, 16" barrel against his CZ .22 Mag Semi Auto rifle with wood stock, not sure of the barrel length but the price of the CZ is double plus of the Rossi RS22M. And may the best rifle, regardless of price, be the Winner!

The .22 WMR actually gets its full velocity in only 13.5-14" of barrel, which I love about it. I have an RS22M and an RB22M, both with 14" barrels and suppressors, and they are fantastic. Great guns in a great calibre.

Appreciate the shoutout. I'm really surprised as well that the 16" barrel achieved virtually the same velocity as the 21". What's interesting though is that in my velocity test, I achieved notably higher velocity from both the Maxi Mags and the Hornady. I don't know if that's the difference between one lot of ammunition and another, the eviromental difference between location/elevation/temperature/humidity, a difference between our two chrono's (which are the same chrono), or a combination of all 3. Perfect timing on the video though- I'm sitting here sipping coffee about to load up the Durango to go make a gel video and hopefully a long range video with the RS22M today...
@TheHide
@TheHide 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, it's so hard to say with rimfire ammunition. Their loadings are so all over the place as far as consistency under normal conditions it's probably a small combination of all three. Be neat to get together sometime to test them side by side, lol. Awesome! Can't wait to check it out. I'm gonna have to get mine out to 150 and see how it does also. Thanks for watching!
@BuckeyeBallistics

@@TheHide Yeah we're not too far apart if I remember correctly (Indiana/Ohio?), so that should definately be doable at some point if you would like to. I took the rifle out to 300 yards yesterday, but it was all over the place shooting probably about a 4ft group at 300. Either that 30rg bullet is tumbling long range (doubt it), or my scope went kerbonkers. I'm taking it out again soon with a confirmed good scope to see what happens. If it's the bullet, then I guess I'll have to switch to 40gr for long range even though they're not as accurate from my rifle. I'm really thinking it's the scope though because it has been put through about 50 or more 12 guage slugs including magnums lol. Lesson learned if so...
@TheHide
@TheHide 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, shoot me an email at dixienormous5614@aol.com or message me on my FB page facebook.com/ThaHide and we can set something up! Ah yeah that true could definitely be a scope issue. I'd be interested to see if my results at 150 would compare to the results you showed at 150 using the factory barrel length... I only have 210yrds at my place but may have to give it a go out that far also... Ammo really is the deciding factor it seems. The most consistent load for me has been that Hornady load, but out that far wind will for sure come into play.
@BuckeyeBallistics
@BuckeyeBallistics 2 жыл бұрын
@@TheHide I don't have FB so I will email you. All I know is that I can shoot .22lr 300 yards no problem, so my .22mag should be able to do the same lol. I would definately like to see what results you can get at 150 & 200. Your rifle doesn't seem to be as picky about the ammo like mine, though both of ours did shoot the best with the V-Max bullets. I have been having issues with buldged cases from mine though (videos posted a while back), so I don't know if that affects accuracy or not but I don't think so.

Thanks from Downunder. I just put up a deposit while waiting for my PTA on a 22WMR Bolt action TRAKR version (same but tac' stock) which seems a bargain at $395 Aussie bucks with a 3-9x40 scope fitted. Liked the gun when Walk with Al just featured it and your hard work gives me even more confidence in my choice for a Fox/Bunny gun Probably also get a RB22 LR ( called 8122 in Australia) for quiet plinking and the club target range with cheaper ammo, and maybe swap stocks.

@@TheHide As a kid in the 60's my dad told me of a test done by the NRA where they cut a long 26 or 28 inch rifle, in 22LR, down to pistol length. Perfectly legal at the time. In the end sweet spot was 16 and something inches. I know large rifles gain a little speed from 22 to 26 but with some of our more advanced powders today I think even their sweet spot is all over the map. I love my 22 inch 25/06 it runs 3300fps with 110s. All I hunt is deer and antelope these days so don't see the need to go poking a 26inch barrel through the bushes any more.

I wont lie I was just as shocked as I think everyone else after doing this video. I also re-shot these loads off camera with the same results to just make sure it wasn't a fluke. The numbers were spot on to whats shown in the review. pretty crazy, my guess is that there just isn't enough powder in that small case to take advantage of anything over a 16" barrel. This was very interesting to me as I own a Rossi RS22M and love it aside from the trigger. Mags work great (Savage could learn a thing or two from Rossi) gun feeds, extracts and shoots just lovely. You don't need to say "best for the money" with this rifle. However the price is WAY better than any other .22 mag semi out there. I just may have to cut mine down now. Excellent video. I know it would probably be redundant, but I would be interested to see the velocity and grouping of these 2 rifles once you shorten the barrel on the bolt action rifle. Another idea, and it could be incorporated into that video, is to show your method for shortening that barrel, and how you finished it once it was shortened. I subscribed to this channel today btw.

I don’t care about capacity to awful much in a 22 mag auto, 10 is plenty. But a factory 16ish barrel with a 15-20 round mag would be a formidable home defense rifle for someone on a budget.
@joshklaver47
@joshklaver47 Жыл бұрын
@@hotrodglock Mine has a 14" barrel and a suppressor. The .22 Magnum gets its full velocity in about 13.5", so there's no drop in power or accuracy. A 15 or 20 round magazine would probably be much less reliable. I just carry another four 10 round magazines on my plate carrier. They're cheap, and you can easily stuff them in a pouch or in your pockets.

Great video and some very interesting results. I find that on 22 LR the sweet spot for barrel length seems to be about 16-18 inches, would have thought that 22 mag would have been 18-20 inches but apparently not. He did not use a 18" barrel ant from what I have seen that is where you get max velocity. Looking at getting a Savage B22 Magnum Precision it comes with a 18" barrel will have to get out and test it when it comes. The chart I looked at used 5 different rounds and showed the 18" barrel gave the highest velocity.

my understanding using the 40 grain that the max velocity was had in a 18" barrel. Should get a Savage B22 Magnum that comes with a 18" barrel and give it a try, you might gain some velocity. The chart I looked showed that any thing over 18" would slow them down a bit. and under 18 (16") is what the used they were also going slower than in the 18" barre.. going to have to get me a cromatograph.

Thanks I was wondering if that shorter length allowed for the complete burn and it looks as if it does. I want to take mine and have it threaded for my suppressor, but now seeing that the chop job has no real effect on velocity I may have at least 4 inches lopped off to compensate for the suppressor being added to the end. I'll need to measure the suppressor to see how long it is as i may have to chop the full 4.75 inches off. Anyway, thanks for the video.

A heavier load would reveal the difference between the barrel lengths. There's enough powder in that case to launch a 50 or 55 grain bullet. The lighter bullets are leaving leaving the barrel before the powder is all burned. In my 21 inch barrel I actually got more speed with the 50 grain than with the 40 grain. With an 18 inch barrel the 40 grain was faster. It's all about burn rate. Rim-fire ammo tends to burn slower than center-fire. So keeping the bullet in the barrel longer produces more muzzle energy.
