Ian, I was on a course with someone from the Environment Agency a couple of months ago in Bristol. They were explaining one of their main roles was caging, vaccinating badgers against TB and marking them. We didn't get much time to talk but they mentioned about licencing to carry out this, and other activities, where TB is affecting cattle. I was wondering if it's worth you speaking to EA/DEFRA or even the NFU about any options available to you - although I'm not sure of costs etc.

Happy new year Ian, I was talking to a farmer friend in Pevensey (East Sussex) and he has reactors too 😢. Hope your 60 days hasn’t been lengthened too much. 🙏🏻

Has electric exclusion fencing been considered?. 2 or 3 wires high near the ground could exclude the badgers and possibly addtional wire also exclude the deer.

Thank you. I like you explaining nature stuff. A longterm goal of mine is to be able to recognise a tree by it's leaf, wood or silhouette against the sky, with and without leaf. I'm a bit weird, I think trees are very mysterious. Rudolf Steiner called them: solidified willpower. Think about that; there is something in that.

First off, Happy New Year to you all! 🎉. Now, I don't understand why badgers are protected in the UK. Not being from there it seems odd that the government would protect an animal that is deleterious to an income stream. Or a food source. Is there no way you can trap them and move them elsewhere? Especially if they won't let you deal with them in a more final way?... I just don't understand it. Could they not trap them and test them for TB and exterminate the ones that have TB?

I’d have a bunch to say about badgers, but I’ll release my angst elsewhere, this time. The Blue Bell Wood/Ian’s wood, seems a grand place for a yung’un to be playing

Is there any badgers at the other farm were you made hay this year or silage other year you could bring it back in the feed .

Maybe treat the Badger for TB! It is a hard bug to kill.
@robertmann77863 күн бұрын
So what happens if someone where to take them out. Is the fine more than the cost of losing cattle? And would someone get caught out in the middle of farm land. Asking for a friend?😂😂😂
@robertlaing55023 күн бұрын
How about gathering some badger fecal samples and submitting them for TB testing. Just to settle the discussion once and for all. Perhaps then the " experts " can decide whether they should take some responsibility for your financial losses.
@pixie7063 күн бұрын
I think he is determined that it's the badgers fault even though it's not proven. Once farmers have confined all our badgers to zoos I'm sure they will find something else to cull.

Potentially a very expensive campaign to help reduce badger access to your farms (let's not forget you have two farms now). Badger deterrent fencing, gateway improvements. Hedge filling and barriers, and clearly identifying all access routes and badger pathways and runs yet alone preventing badger access to your barns, food stores, drinking water sources, etc... Might, however, be worth looking at starting off by fencing off badger latrines to prevent access for your cows and other live stock (sheep and geese + dogs) and looking at how you can reduce your live stock and the badgers coming into potential contact. Sorry Ian, no easy answers and you are going to sadly have to change or alter practices and systems you and your dad have operated for years. Good luck

Not to condemn the pesky black and white creature, But I am presuming a local livestock owner (or contractored help) near where I am in the County, has taken things in there own hands. As I passed a fire on the corner of some woodlands today, there was a god arwfull smell. There were several of the said creatures burning approximately 8 that I saw may be more. And about a mile further along was a pile of said creatures rotting in another corner of said wood. I am presuming a set or two have been taken out.

Technically, they are protected in the uk. A lot of problem ones seem to get knocked down by cars and end up on the side of the road. Vile things.

Not necessarily. All wildlife can spread tb
@FarmerP4 күн бұрын
That's true, but no creature is better at spreading it than the badger, Their diet and habits make them by far the most efficient of all our wild creatures in transmitting TB, On top of that we are surrounded by Sets, we can get dozens of them out foraging on summer nights.
@jackiedonaldson52184 күн бұрын
@ oh absolutely. I walked round the ground yesterday and saw several new sets with obvious new activity.

Could start using a bull with better genetic resistance to TB, will take a few years to bear fruit though.
@stu.smith794 күн бұрын
Umm this is a tricky one .brian mays documentary demonstrates what we should be doing rather than the old fashioned and not accurate way of testing for tb which wont change as the government have to much money invested in TB . Deer when they have been tested for tb have tested positive for TB

I think anyone who really understands the Countryside knows that 🦡🦡are the main cause of spreading TB. They ae not cuddly innocents. Thought this current ad kzbin.info/www/bejne/rmK2pHyFms53qbssi=-QOsuNZ0bnirN50q shows the vicious reality (surprised Brian May hasn't complained about that too) Anyway a very Happy New Year to You and Yours - lets hope 2025 is better than the last one - thanks for all your videos (and can I just add your Beef is Brilliant 🥩🥩🥩)
