I was terrified of cuckoo clocks as a child. My grandparents had one. After they passed away within a short time of each other in 1985 and 1986, we attempted to take down the clock, but decades of dust and nicotine had glued the thing to the wall. We tugged hard at it until it gave way suddenly and hit the floor with a calamitous bang, shattering into a hundred pieces. Fine by me.

I have an 8 day German Cuckoo clock with a wooden bird that keeps perfect time. My Father bought it in the 80s when he was visiting Germany. The chime is always on and anyone who walks past it winds it up if the weights are low. I think that clock is gonna live longer than my grandchildren.

That is a quail. There is a type of cuckoo clock known as a quail and cuckoo clock. Basically, the quail calls every quarter (15, 30, 45, hour) and the number of times it calls depends on the quarter (one time on 15, twice on 30, three times on 45, and four times on the hour). After the quail calls on the hour, the cuckoo calls as it normally should. On some quail and cuckoo clocks, the cuckoo also calls on the half-hour, but on some it only calls on the hour.

@@nalinilinges9043 Yup, I had that very problem with my latest cuckoo clock acquisition. Speedy cuckoo. That, is one of the easiest problems to overcome. It’s all about the weight. If you get a lighter weight, then the cookie will slow down. On many of the weights there are numbers actually stamped on them. If not, you have to get a good kitchen scale and weigh yours. Purchase a weight that is a bit lighter than the one that’s on the clock. That usually turns out very well. A lot of folks are selling weights on eBay. If you accidentally chose a weight that is too light, hang it anyway and add some hardware onto the weight until the speed is good. Weigh everything and that will give you your optimum number that you have to shoot for. Don’t go too late because the cuckoo may not work or be sluggish to start. Experiment!
