After a lot of grinding, you actually can escape from the nether without anything First, get wood from nether trees and make wood tools Second, go to a basalt biome and get black stone, then you can upgrade to stone tools Third, get to bastions and get the gold tp trade Fourth, trade to get obsidian and iron Fifth, find gravel and get flint Sixth, make a flint and steel Seventh, make and light up a nether portal

A couple alternate ideas, for when you don’t want to sever friendships. You could build a two way elevator to the top. You could use healing 3 arrows at the top of their afk farm. Use a water maze, or instead give them exactly 3 flame resistance potions. There’s plenty to not kill your friends but gamify traps or give them a good scare. Alternatively, you can cover your traps in hoppers to collect their items and funnel them to their base. They’ll die to the trap, and wake to see their items safely stored in front of them.

a good one is to put the afk person into a regenerating cobblestone wall room and fill the room with water. Place a conduit and a elder guardian nearby, and it could take hours to mine one block, just for it to repair itself (it will take a lot of time thou (like a lot))

about the nether portal trap - it's actually not inescapable in new versions, since the nether update gave nether piglins and trees, even players with empty inventory can mine nether tree, find iron nuggets in fortress or bastion, find obsidian and build portal, make an iron ingot out of nuggets. finding flint is easy in nether since there is a lot of gravel. and thats a speedrun idea "minecraft speedrun but we start in nether"

Fun fact: If your stuck in the nether you can get back to the overworld. Flint from gravel. Obsidian from fortress chests. But its pretty hard as not all fortresses have obsidian plus fortresses are super dangerous,with mobs.

There is a way to get out the nether if they do that,just find gold to trade with piglins. Or craft a pickaxe to mine the gold in the nether and make a furnace to smelt it, trade the piglin for obsidian then make a firecharge to light the portal and get the flip out of there!
