Thank you for all that you all do and the Mount Vernon Ladies Association to preserve this beautiful estate. So important for our young people to come and learn how Washington and his family helped shape our nation from the very beginning. Merry CHRISTmas Mount Vernon!

I hate to hear about the tree. It’s probably seeded several others there though. Thanks for taking care of this beautiful place for us to be able to visit.

They should keep the part of the tree with the civil war markings and the rest of the tree should be made into a piece that should be put in the house on display like a chair or table so that the tree will always be a part of Mt Vernon.

I was gonna say exactly the same. Preserve the area with the markings and use the rest to make a desk or chair for the house

First off, thank you so very much for such an informative video! I simply love visiting Mt. Vernon, and have been doing so since August of 1968 (with my mother and brothers when I was an 11 yr. old child). In 2017, I actually had the honor of being chosen (I'm a USMC vet.) as a participant in the formal wreath laying ceremony at (and in) the Presidential (and family) vault. But, when there, I always seek out as many "witness trees" as I have time for (in order marvel at what they must have seen over the years). So, I am saddened to see this video, but am thankful that I probably have already said goodbye to this majestic giant when I was last there. Thanks again!

We've gotten many questions about what we've done with the wood from his tree. Check out our newest video to answer that question: kzbin.info/www/bejne/oWfYlmqmjbmasKs

I have an ink pen produced by Mount Vernon’s woodcarvers from a Swamp Oak tree, circa 1771. Very cool artifact and wonderful means to share the memory of these old trees.

Most interesting! Other than counting the rings when it has fallen, how do you tell the age of the tree when still standing? Did GW "inventory" many trees and these are the last 10 of them? I would assume that the 350-year-old tree is not in the public area.

I always wish that you could hook up a microphone and recorder and it would tell its story. Sad , sad day.

You should leave the tree whole! Of course you've already cut it in half! It should be preserved and set up as a memorial so that the carving can be seen for years to come! You're wasting history by carving it up and selling it off piece-by-piece!
