@Larry Larry, I typed up your solution with some debug print statements and finally was able to understand it. my problem is I have a hard time understanding what needs to be done let alone solve it. and nowadays many employers want to put you through the coding puzzles even though your job might be doing some mind numbing tickets one after the other.
