I’m a left hand man who has been playing right hand for over 20 years, I just bought a left hand Michael Kelly f-5 with a neck fracture and I have to do the dubble scarf joint. Thanks for all work

Somehow, I missed this one back when. Playing the mandolin backwards, to me, means playing like a guitar. Basically, the top four strings of the guitar. Now you made me want to try it lol.

Your friend, Harry Wagner, plays what I call "upside down" (and I think a few others call it that). The late, great country artist, Dan Seals, played that way and was quite an accomplished picker. Also, Jim Rooney--totally awesome picker. Adam Steffey, who plays right handed, is a southpaw by birth. After noticing him signing autographs left handed, I asked him why he chose to pick mandolin right handed. "Because its cheaper." LOL Slim Whitman was opposite Steffey. He was naturally right handed and learned to play that way until he had an accident that severed the end of one of his fretting fingers, after which he restrung and relearned to play left handed. Paul McCartney, a natural southpaw, credits Whitman with being instrumental in his learning to play guitar and bass left handed, after seeing a poster of Whitman with his guitar properly strung for left handed playing. Great job, as always, Jerry. A joy to watch you work and to listen to.

My dad (who's left handed) taught me how to shoot a gun, bow and play pool.....all things I do left handed! I'm right handed but for the life of me I can't do those right handed. If you play a left handed mandolin, right handed, you're really just playing guitar :) Thanks for the video, Jerry!

Off point! I once watched a quartet and the lead string was an older gentleman. He played a guitar right handed and then would pick up his banjo and picked it left handed. Never seen that before or after, but it was amazing.

Some things are easy, resonators, mando shouldn't be too hard (mines teardrop).. floating bridges, intonation, whatever nut trick you prefer (some you can basically spin around)...you get used to doing it..(edit; got the tailpiece cover off...this is going to take a little work!).

+Rosa String Works - You do great work!! A lot of luthiers might not have detected that elusive "humpy dealie" in the nut slot, and then just blamed the resulting poor playability of the mandolin on the LH modified state of the instrument rather than their own less than thorough job skills. I want to thank you on behalf of all us left handed players for the high quality of the work in this video (as well as ALL your work). It's hard enough trying to live in a stupid right handed world, without being told to "just learn to play right handed" by lazy guitar techs.

Dane - Hendrix played a right-handed guitar flipped over, but it was strung for a leftie. Freddie King OTOH DID play upside down - his "bends' are all pulls - and it sounds unique. Check out this vid with Freddie and SRV kzbin.info/www/bejne/o4HGeH2Xnc-mfrs

I think you and Tioga Fretsworks are saying the opposite thing. I was sure Hendrix played a right handed guitar left handed. But I'm not sure about how he strung it. Dang, now I won't sleep to night. And I have to get up in six hours.

That was a lot of fun Jerry. I'm ambidextrous so I usually use which ever hand is convenient, therefore I learned guitar right handed, for lack of a left handed guitar. I have always wanted to have a left handed guitar, but was afraid to just reverse the strings, nuts, bridge,m etc.I look forward to seeing you build the LH guitar. As I expected, their must be some structural differences. Good video as usual. Regards, Solomon

Great video. You did an awesome job. I have never heard of that brand. But it's a beautiful color. That fact that it's all solid wood is a plus. I am left handed and I play guitar right handed. I always thought if I had started left handed. I would of been a better player. Gerry you did a good job playing that mandolin. As always I gave you a thumbs up. I would like to see you build that new guitar. Thanks for sharing your videos. I hope you have a blessed week.

We southpaws have to do this kind of thing more often than not. There's only one company I have found that sells left handed instruments at the same price as righties, and they are very good guitars. Usually, I get to pay 15 - 20% extra over the cost of a right hand piece.

Taught myself to play a right handed ukulele, strung right handed, left handed. I also play bass, and can play a rh bass upside down. I don't like to do it, but when I happen into the local music shop and a jam is going on, I can join in on the bottom end.

It's hard for me to know whether or not I should play one left or right handed. I am left-handed, but I am used to plucking with my left hand just because I play violin and there isn't really such thing as a left-handed violin. Just not sure what I would be more successful doing.

You did an awesome job!! I am new to mandolins but I was wondering how would you intonate it? Would it be done on the bridge and saddle like a guitar since it is movable? It seems to me in my mind I would have to to figure out a way to fix the bridge and saddle and slowly file the proper angle? I am just curious is all. I find what you do very interesting. I love the videos.
@RosaStringWorks
@RosaStringWorks 6 жыл бұрын
On a mandolin intonation is simply getting the bridge and saddle in the right position. When it's in the right position the notes will be correct. It's the same way on a guitar it's just that most guitar bridges are not movable.

My grandfather has an older Gibson dove, could that be converted to left handed?
@RosaStringWorks
@RosaStringWorks 5 жыл бұрын
I suppose it could. The biggest problem would be the pickguard in terms of the looks. I don't think you could ever make that look correct. Mainly because it would leave a scar where the pickguard was at on the right hand side. Also the internal bracing would still be for a right-handed instrument. Bottom line is I don't think I would recommend that.
@Scoobadoob777
@Scoobadoob777 5 жыл бұрын
Rosa String Works yeah for sure, just wondering if there would be any problems with the bracing and sound? Where abouts are you btw and where can I message you pictures to get a quote?
@Scoobadoob777
@Scoobadoob777 5 жыл бұрын
Rosa String Works didn’t see the last part on the bracing, reckon that answers my question, how about a flat iron mandolin? I know it would look a little wonky upside down, but it’s my most prized possession and I wanna play it.

What size saw did you use on the nut to cut the string slots? I was told you needed to have different sizes for each string -- is that correct?
@RosaStringWorks

It's a fret slotting saw and I have my own technique for using it and making the slots different sizes. Been doing it for about 35 years that way. I wouldn't necessarily recommend it to anyone else.

Welcome to the world of left handed people. We have to learn to do everything backwards (and still understand what we're doing) [don't be rude, people] After spending a lifetime learning how to use all kinds of tools and instruments both backwards, or just plain how "everyone" uses it, I can say you have only just started. Isaw you hesitate a few times there, and I can understand the way you have to get your head together. It all comes natural now, but it takes a l.....o.......t of practice, to use circular saws, screw drivers,cordless drills, can openers, guitars, RULERS, etc, etc, etc. with either hand, and understand what you are doing. Sorry, but you are a babe in the woods as that goes.
