Oh Damn…you were born too late! But the good thing is that all of this amazing music is saved digitally. It is there for you and your age group, and mine (almost 60!). There is something about this music that hits you ‘emotionally’. And it is missing from so much of todays’ music (though there are good songs). The 60s had some great music, the 70s had a lot of great music, and the 80’s had an avalanche of new sounds and original new amazing bands, singers and sounds. I think the 80’s did so much in the way of ‘new’….no other decade will ever be able to match it. New doesn’t equal ‘good’, and a ‘bit different’ doesn’t equal ‘original’ or ground breaking. I think all of those ‘bests’ happened in the 60’s to early 2000’s (grunge/garage….the last of the truly original music).

The chord progression and the down beat was not the traditional sound of the times. So many did not 'hear' the creative sound they had. My father was a classic rock/blue style fan. And I do love that style as well. But he couldn't 'hear' the same sound(s) that I did of these masters of the new wave. I tried to teach my sons the understanding of chords working together and harmony (even off set harmony) and the both of them say as for today's music it doesn't have anything that compares to previous genres I have introduced them to. I appreciate KZbin for allowing me to hear and experience a piece of years gone by.!.!. ( this is not a plug for KZbin........However.......

I’ve heard a few spiltz enz cover bands, but they won’t play “poor boy”, I suspect because no one can replicate Eddie Rayner’s brilliance on the keyboard. Still love this song, all these decades later. I saw crowded house, when they did the secret tour of Australia, 1986? 1987? trying out their material, to find out if loyal spiltz enz fans, would like the new band, the new songs, - give them a chance. It was in a small adelaide nightclub, only 300 capacity, just in case it all turned pearshaped I guess. I couldn’t work out why it was in such a small space at the time, but at least we could all see the musicians. Brilliant. It was all the songs that ended up on the very first crowded house album. Eddie Rayner was there too.

@MrTonaluv Жыл бұрын
What album are we talking about? True Colours?
@davidtaylor351 Жыл бұрын
Their early songs were recorded when they were in the UK in 1976. Partly financed By a NZ Arts Council grant. And later albums were recorded in Aust. But to clear things up a little. Their recording contract was with Polydor records NZ. Which was a subsidiary of Polydor records UK / Europe. It wasn't that people couldn't record and mix in NZ. EMI NZ had a new modern studio in Lower Hutt (Wellington area), as did the NZBC at Avalon Lower Hutt. And there was, Marmalade Studios in Wellington City, Stebbings in Auckland etc. The point about recording in Aust was....You qualified for Australian broadcasting quotas. NZ never had quotas. And at the time, in early 1979. Split Enz, in association with Polydor, were working with Mushroom records in Aust, to break into the Aust market. So there was an incentive to record in Aust. The Albums were released by Polydor records in NZ and Mushroom records in Aust. Later on, the recording thing didn't matter. Because under the Aus NZ trade agreements. NZ recordings, were included in Aust quotas. Anyway, it is slightly ironic, given that one of the top producers in Aust at the time, was NZr Peter Dawkins.

1980 is one of the most futuristic years in our history. This band Split Enz & Mi-Sex and hundreds of others that were caught in the New Wave net had this cosmic and far out sound. The late 70's and early 80's could be the pinnacle of Western culture. Then Devo's De-Evolution started to become evidentiary. The music today is very ordinary and sometimes horrible and diisgusting and that is the so called Rock bands, they are trying too hard instead of being organic, real and sincere. In the late 70's and early 80's I was out at venues seeing as many Bands as I could, 5/6 nights a week. Spent way too much money enjoying my youth.. I saw Mi-Sex many times, yet the gig that stands out in my mind is one at The Govenor's Pleasure which was in Dickson St The Rocks, Sydney. I can tell you that they are not forgotten, obscure or unknown in a lot of people's minds and hearts. They are much loved. One of New Zealand's finest. Great front man in Steve Gilpin. RIP mate

Tim's vocals were special in the Enz. This song is all about da' bass!!! Great melody & talk about "vibe"? Fugheddaboudit!! Saw Tim in concert last night - he opened with this.
