I am very lucky because I have a full finished basement. After 2020 when I couldn't get meat, I invested quite a bit for shelves, buckets, mylar bags, storage containers and 2 more freezers. We have made this a lifestyle. I also have sensors that are easily accessible so I can monitor the temps in my freezer and the basement. I am so glad I did this when I did. I have saved so much money by rethinking the "new normal". We have had a situation where we needed to use the preps when my son who lives with me had accute Liver failure. That was January 3 this year. He just went back to work last week. I pray people try to get prepped because there really are no safety nets. God Bless 😊

I just met you tonight, and boy, do I like you and your personality!!! You are regular folk. Not some marine trying to prepare us for the apocalypse!! I’m pretty sure the majority of us will not be strapping a backpack on and run into the woods to make a tent out of bandaids and drink our own urine! I’m 60 years old and if the world collapses, do I really want to be one of the remaining? Don’t think so! BUT, I do see the availability of food items becoming hard to get. Look at covid, and way back when our area had a power grid go down. People panic. I’d like to have enough to last a month. You teach so much, so beautifully. You should have your own tv show! Thank you! I subscribed right away to see what else I can learn from you!

A tip: maple syrup only lasts forever if it is never opened. Once opened it can get mold in it and often does. My solution is to store it in small bottles instead of large ones and only open a small bottle at a time. If mold gets in it , the strands can grow through the whole bottle so I throw it out.
@berniemeyer1643

I bought a gallon when travelling through maple bush country. I gave it to a young couple thinking I was giving them a treasure. When I later asked them how the maple syrup was going they said it went bad and they had to throw it out. I was upset that they were so careless with it. My parents would keep a large container of it in the freezer. It would stay liquid and they would top up a small bottle for the refrigerator as needed. The pint jug I have now that I bought from the grocery store says to refrigerate after opening.

I was recently gifted 3 old tins of spices nearly 100 years old, cinnamon, nutmeg and ginger, half full, I was shocked to find that you could still smell the spices. My neighbor recently passed and they came from her mother when the Rawleigh Man used to make home deliveries. Can't say as I would use them but the smell is really strong, especially the cinnamon.

I had a friend who would toss EVERYTHING out when "expired". I tried to tell her she was wasting her money by doing this. Also, all those spices we buy have been in huge piles in warehouses/boats in foreign countries before they ever get to a USA store. Great video. I am giving list to some family who needs to get educated in for a future food crisis. If I buy spices in plastic containers, I put in glass spice jars.

Buckets Only vs Mylar Bags in buckets: I have had two buckets split open at the bottom, both of them were unused. I guess it was just age. If I had stored grain in them without mylar bags, I would have lost everything and created a huge mess. It’s now bags in buckets only for me and my house. Mylar bags protect the grain while the bucket protects the Mylar bag. YMMV.

When we got an extra free room I turned it into a walk in pantry. I love it, I can close it off, keep it pitch black, dry, and cool without too much effort.. I can go in there and just look at it, it gives me peace to know we can handle things coming our way. It feels so good and to me it is fun to go do a little straighting, or reorganizing, or pulling old forward and putting new back. I keep a couple cloth tote bags that I keep one in the kitchen and one in the pantry. Then when I need to shop the pantry more than I can comfortably carry I have a sturdy bag to get the goodies. It feels wonderful to shop sales in the stores to keep us stocked but meal shop in the pantry.

Good morning Leisa! Did you know that there are a lot of different trees that can be tapped for syrup? I believe it is over 30 different types. Maple, sycamore, birch etc! Apple cider vinegar can be created using a sugar water and apple scraps. You can also make other types of vinegar from your favorite fruits as well. And the juice in a can of chick peas can be used as an egg substitute in baking!

That’s all the liquor we have in our house. But it is so worth it!!!.I learned that soy sauce lasts forever bc mine hasn’t gone bad & I’ve had it a long time.

Grandson looked in the pantry and very quietly (I heard him) said wow 🤣. Wait till he sees the toilet paper/paper towel/kleenex stashes on the upper shelves in the office. Many of these channels have recipes for dried meals in a jar. You would take some of those recipes and adapt them to how you cook. For example, I do not have the pressure canner or 20,000 glass jars that they say y'all need to fill to have food for a year. So I put mine in vacuum sealed pouches. Many of the dried meals in a jar are for the instant pot. I do not have an instant pot. I do have a 6-1 rice cooker that operates on my pocket solar USB power bank or the truck and other alternatives. So I put together meals so that I can put 2 cups of water and the contents of a pouch in my cooker and press a button for a quick meal. I chose 2 cups because water is sold in bottles that contain 2 cups in my area. Recipe example Fried Rice Parboiled Rice Dehydrated carrots Dehydrated peas Dehydrated onions Soy sauce powder. I can add meat if I chose later. I can add other vegetables if I want.

Great info again Leisa! I double and tripled up on the rice with my dogs in mind. If dog food runs low or if it's crazy expensive since it hasn't stopped climbing, I can make them food with rice and veggies and the juice from the Ugly Chicken!
@melodyclark4347
@melodyclark4347 8 ай бұрын
You can season rice for the dogs with low salt bullion, beef or chicken. If there's any meat you can set for future use, dehydrate, smoke, or freeze dry, powder it if possible, add to homemade dog food. It is necessary to Rehydrate meats first, as it will swell in their stomachs, It could dehydrate the animal in the process, or possibly form a blockage. You can fit this in when you cook the rice or beans. The juice from canned meat, think beef. Chicken, spam, tuna. Sardines or kippers are a good flavoring, the oils help their digestive system, just watch the sodium level. Cats will eat flavored rice, add a few veges, like frozen mixed bags. And a couple diced sardines or kippers. Watch the salt. Human milk gives cats diarrhea. It's crazy to me to have written all this lol. God bless you.

Love Jello, fruit on the side and sometimes whip-cream on top - but real whip cream - nothing from a can or a plastic tub. If we are having whip cream the bowl is chilled along with the whippers, there are just somethings I won't budge on and a little splash of homemade Bourdon Vanilla. Great information, I love the list because every item is the beginning of something great 🥂

I am not a big beans and rice girl, but with a tighter than usual grocery budget, I've broken into my buckets and am experimenting with new recipes and ways of incorporating them into my meals to extend them. People are so concerned about bugs in their wheatberries, rice, etc. Insects are ground up to make flour along with the wheatberries and no one has died from ingesting them. When you're ready to use your berries, rice, etc. just fill a basin with water and dump in the berries or rice, swish the basin around and the little critters will float to the top where you can skim them off with a strainer. Problem solved. I never pack anything into mylar bags because I feel the chemicals will eventually leach into what you're trying to store. When you put items in the freezer to kill bugs and then take the items out, condensation will form on the items and bring about fungus growth and mold. I tried that method on corn kernels and got some nice fuzz on the corn. MUCH worse than eating bugs. I store all my dry items in glass jars with oxygen absorbers and desiccant packs -- desiccants on the bottom and O2 on the top. Bay leaves didn't work for me. My 2 cents.

I totally agree with oxygen absorbers and Mylar bags! 👏👏👏 also the gama lids for easy access. I do have dried beans and a hand crank grinder. I also was told beans will become too hard and will never cook. Hmm not had beans so long as this to happen. But I figure you can buy bean flakes and bean flour, so why not be ready to grind my own? Flour, my thought on the “too hard” beans. 🤷🏻‍♀️

I have a month or two of stocks stashed where i can find space. My big issue is water. I will not drink water out of plastic bottles due to leaching chemicals and microplastics and it takes up room i don't have. Not really sure how to tackle that issue.

I'm in a tiny senior living apartment in way Northern California. Room and funds are also an issue with me. The last few months, since in shop once a month, I've tried to buy at least a couple containers or large canning jars, and double of one pantry staple (flour, sugar, cocoa, etc.). It's helping me to get a small stock going. I read a helpful comment for storage ideas, but also realized that, since I've been decluttering and downsizing, I can actually store several large coolers or bins under my raised platform bed!
