Wahoooo an international flight attendant layover in GERMANY! This was one of my favorite trips to date. What must I do next time I'm here?! A Christmas market, depending on the time. Also try visiting maybe a castle or visit wine country. And you pronounced Mainz just fine. Yes, these pillows exist, we also have square shaped pillows often happen to be smaller. At a hotel though they should be a nice square shape. There's a whole lot to see, explore and enjoy. Come back for vacation and let us know beforehand. Maybe we can help make your stay a bit more enjoyable and memorable.

What I love in Frankfurt is the „Goethe Haus“, the house where the famous German author Johann von Goethe was born and grew up after 1749. Unfortunately the house was bombed in the last war I think, but it was built up again and is an exact replica of the original. If you like quaint old buildings, that‘s the place to go. What I also liked in Frankfurt was a tower near the main station, and if you go to the top, there‘s a lovely restaurant and bar with a view of the whole of Frankfurt. It‘s called Main Tower, Main being the name of the river that goes through Frankfurt. „Main“ in Main Tower rhymes with wine!

In Frankfurt? Or Germany as a whole? Frankfurt is arguably the least interesting city in Germany, unless you're into banking/stock exchange stuff. However in every German city you should be able to get curry wurst (curry sausage) that's delicious 😁 Berlin and Munich are nice cities with international airports. Hamburg is nice too if you like to party. My fav city in Germany is Dresden. It has a lot of history and (rebuilt) historical buildings and great food. But I don't think they have international flights hehehe

Hi Julia, I wrote a comment a few days back but somehow i cant see it :) When you are next time in Frankfurt you could visit Heidelberg. It's only one hour train ride from Frankfurt and it is a beautiful tiny city with an old university, lots of students and the beautiful Heidelberger Schloss (Heidelberg Palace). Also it is one of the more sunnier and warmer places in Germany. When we were students we used to chill at Neckarwiese and have a picknick. Also Philosophenweg is nice.

In WW2 my dad crossed the Rhine just south of Mainz “Mines” with Patton’s 3rd army. Patton famously stopped mid crossing and (let’s say tinkled) in the river. Was on a Rhine River cruise in 2019 and didn’t think to look for where that was until we were past the spot. Gives me a reason to go back.

If you want to take longer river cruises, go with a Danube River one. Rhine cruises are less scenic; there are numerous industrial sites along the Rhine. The Danube has a lot of beautiful towns like Buda and Pest in Hungary.
@DavidWood22 жыл бұрын
If you cruise either the Rhine or the Danube, you will likely do most of the cruising at night other than the particularly scenic bits (the Wachau Valley on the Danube and the Middle Rhine between Koblenz and Rüdesheim on the Rhine). I'd choose more by the port stops than the river. I have cruised the Rhine between Rotterdam and Basel (which I believe is the entire length navigable by cruise ships) and the Danube between Giurgiu and Regensburg. It is hard to choose between the two. You are right to say that there are more industrial sites and perhaps also more commercial traffic on the Rhine, but the Danube also has its share of commercial sites and commercial traffic. Another way of choosing is that a typical Danube cruise will give you capital cities (Budapest, Vienna and perhaps also Bratislava). A Rhine cruise will typically feature one capital (Amsterdam - it's not on the Rhine, but most Rhine cruises go there) and some smaller towns and cities (Strasbourg, Basel, Koblenz, Köln). Even so, what you see is itinerary-dependent - pick both the itinerary and the cruise line wisely, as they are all different. Julia has mentioned elsewhere in the comments that Eric is half-Swiss, so perhaps this would tilt them towards a Rhine cruise. I was in Mainz on a river cruise last year and have happy memories of visiting the Gutenberg Museum that Julia went past at 3:50.

You got a late harvest Gewurtztraminer. It should be fabulous! Usually, late harvest wines are on the sweeter side but I've had late harvest gewurtztraminers that are not very sweet (thinking about how sweet a late harvest reisling can be). I'm interested to hear what you thought of it :-)

Hi Julia. So glad you are enjoying Germany. I lived there for 13 years. The first 4 years, in the Air Force, in the city right across the river from Mainz, called Wiesbaden. The City Hall is called a Rathaus.
@jjquinn20042 жыл бұрын
I know Wiesbaden better than Mainz and I remember seeing all the U.S. servicemen and women when I visited in the 80s. I used to work for GM Overseas and would regularly visit Opel just up the road in Russelsheim and we'd stay in Wiesbaden (My boss lived in Konigstein.) I don't like Frankfurt, so even when I attend the Frankfurt Auto Show or Automechanika, I stay out in Wiesbaden.

The Rheingau is southwest of Mainz. This is a famous wine-growing area and offers a great landscape. The Schwanheimer Dunes in the middle of the city is worth a trip. Also the river Main and the shore in the evening is great. The Römer, the city hall. Apple wine is typical for Frankfurt. Walk along the Museumsufer. The iron bridge. Maintower for an overview of Frankfurt(Mainhattan). The Gewürztraminer you bought for you and Eric is a great wine with intense aroma. The grape comes from the Tramin area in South Tyrol which belongs to Italy. The Dolomites are spectacular. You pronounced the city of Mainz perfectly. I am German and i am very happy that you like my homeland so much. The old town of Mainz and Frankfurt. Spätzle is said mainly in the south of Germany. Handmade spaetzle(noodles) taste the best. Many greetings from Stuttgart

Hi Julia, I am glad that you enjoyed the city of Mainz (your first pronounciation was 👍) That city is much better for a 24hrs.-layover than Frankfurt: smaller, a more historic city center, almost everything within walking distance. In general, it is a 'cozy' town. I was a flight attendant with Lufthansa (yes, it's me on the wing of a 747-400 at the airport of Santiago de Chile) from 1982-2015, and your layover reminds me of my countless layovers in the US, which I enjoyed very much. I can also remember my layovers in Dallas, which were extraordinary, because in the late 1980's to the mid 90's we used to stay there for a couple of days, flying from DFW to Mexico City and back to DFW before flying home to FRA the next day. I really enjoyed it very much and I will never forget it! When I came to the US, I always felt like home away from home. Thank you very much for sharing your impressions of your layover in Mainz, and always happy landings!
