I am very familiar with Tangier Island. A decade ago I was a volunteer pilot who flew into Tangier weekly to fly chronically ill residents to their treatment centers in Accomack VA or to wherever they needed to go. My service to them was free, but they often thanked me with packages of soft-shelled crabs. Landing on the island runway was always a little scary too because seagulls would drop clams onto the runway to break the clamshells open to get at the meat. Clamshells will tear up an airplane’s tires in a heartbeat, and there are no repair facilities on the island to fix or replace tires. Anyway, I have great respect and affection for the folks that live on Tangier, awesome people.⭐️

I also am very familiar with the island and use to fly Department of the Army Engineers out to survey the seawall vis UH-1H helicopter, this was in the late 80's. We'd fly out of Ft Eustis, VA got to Portsmouth pick up the engineers and fly to the island.

If there's that many chronically ill people on one island someone should look into what's making them all so ill.

It is illnesses like diabetes, cancers and heart disease. I think for the most part, people on Tangier are quite healthy…they just lack easy access to treatment. Their travel is limited by weather and just distance. That is where the mercy medical flights came in to help, not because there was any unusual amount of illness on the island.

Luke - this is important work you've done here. Tangier suffers miserably from a lack of exposure - meaning people simply don't know about it...and your content on this topic can go a long way to rememedy some of that. We have run out from Lewisetta to the island a number of times over the years and it is a special place with extraordinary people. Places like this are worth saving and I thank you for doing your part. Cheers buddy.

Amazing video! Great job Cameron! I spent my 90’s and 2000’s on the Island, duck hunting and hanging out in a crab shack. Stayed over at the Sunset Inn eating that amazing Cab Imperial and breakfast at the double six.. Real happy with your approach to getting resources for the Island, good luck to you. Glad you had Luke over to help tell the story.

I am an Antique Dealer. The Coca Cola bottle is called amber instead of brown, its from the late 1800’s, Early 1900’s when Coca Cola was still being sold by pharmacists as a “tonic”. Not entirely as a drink as we know it today. In case you’re wondering that’s a $150 or more bottle!

26:52 The history of McCormick bottles in Baltimore, Maryland, includes the company's founding, the iconic cream-colored building, and the bottles themselves: Founding Willoughby M. McCormick started the McCormick & Company business in Baltimore in 1889, selling products door-to-door from a cellar and one room. In 1903, he and his brother incorporated the company in Maine and then in Maryland in 1915.

Back in 63, I was born in Seattle.. one year later, we moved up to Friday Harbor, San Jaun Island (WashingtonState). I spent 5 years there. Then moved back to the city. Every summer until 1981, I would revisit. Power is still fed via a massive cable on the sea floor from the mainland. Mail, fuel, and groceries are still ferried in. The island is supported by fishermen and tourists. The house my folks built still stands and is a bed and breakfast.

A brown Coca-Cola bottle is from 1905 to 1916 so that is a good 119 years ago that is crazy. For the bottle he had on the table he could sell it for about $75 but if he cleaned it up didn't scratch it and made it look brand new if you get about $150 for it. Hope it helps.

It’s such a brilliant and eco-friendly way to stabilize soil, reduce erosion, and recycle glass that would otherwise go to waste. Not only does it benefit the environment, but it also helps preserve crucial ecosystems for future generations. If you're passionate about conservation and innovative solutions, this is definitely worth learning more about! #EcoFriendly #Conservation #LandRestoration"

I recomand the islanders to research what we do in Germany with our ''Islands'' in the North Sea for context the long Island of Sylt with its shape marks the old Coastline but some 200 years ago and some more we had some BIG floods rolling in wich greated this Muddy Tidal Sea. Our Islands a thriving with Tourism and some are still used for Farming. on Low Tide some are connected with rail wich is mostly used by the maintenace crew of the coastal protection. residence use them as well because they aid the cause. back then the carts were powered by wind with sails but things got modern. Amrum, Föhr, Pellworm, Norderney, Wangerooge, Langeoog and many more some even have Narrow Gauge Steam Trains on them. and most of them are not that much larger than Tangier or Smith Island. oh and some Island during winter storms get below ~20 feet of water when it gets ''Land unter''

Sounds like what Tangier needs is more jetties. You wouldn't want to build an actual seawall all the way around because then there would be no beaches or wetlands around the edge. But if you could have something like an artificial barrier reef, that would fix everything.

You do… The mileage and the fact that it probably hasn’t spit out a head gasket yet are what makes it a “rare gem.” And being a long bed adds a tiny bit to that but production wise they were quite plentiful. 🙃 Joking aside that is a sweet little truck! 3300 miles is nuts. It’s only needed one oil change!
