Hi all. In today's video, I'll talk about a simple way to convert a computer power supply to produce 24 volts. At this voltage, a current of approximately 3 amperes can be obtained. With a higher load, the voltage will drop to 22 volts, but the current can be more than ten amperes!!!

The voltage regulation is done primarily from the +5V line. That is the reason why the voltage output increased when you loaded up the 5V line as it was simply idling with no load and needs either the regulation circuit to be modified or a permanent load applied to the 5V line. The higher the +5V load, the better the regulation becomes on the 12 V lines (there is a practical and sensible limit to this load to do what you want). Without the 5V load, there is limited regulation as the most important voltage to be regulated for a computer is the +5V line - that is why it is given priority for regulation. On some cheap power supplies, there is no regulation on any other line but the 5V line, so something to watch out for.

D5 can be omitted, its just a reverse voltage protection when used in computer. We can use same diodes as on +12v side. Remove the -12v inductor coil and wound same gauge wire as +12 on the same inductor. No need of winding another one. +5v side needed a load of 10w 1-3ohms wire wound resistor. This setup will increase the performance of the supply.

I tried replicating what you showed in the video. My idea was to cut the traces and add a separate schottky diode bypassing the low amperage pcb completely. But first I tried replacing the unused diode with a choke I got from an old psu. But after this step when I turned it on, the fan spun up then stopped. Now its dead and I can only hear some cirping noise every now and then. Do you have any idea what might have went wrong?

I think you made a mistake somewhere, but you didn’t notice it yourself, because if you did everything as in my video, then this couldn’t have happened. Now I advise you to put everything back as it was and check the details. First start with transistors and IC. Look at the supply voltage it receives.
