Love the old 243. One of the best dual purpose cartridges out there. I load the 100 grain Speer for mine and never had an issue on southern whitetails inside of 300. Long live the 243👍🏻

350 yards is a really long shot, The longest shot ever shot at a deer was 240 yards, and that was on the powerlines, The average range that I shoot deer is between 15 and 60 yards, which is probably why the 243 is very popular down here

I love the 308 and really like the 243. Many years ago I got a Remington model 7 youth in 243 for the kids. What a fun rifle to shoot! Once I had it set up, I had to try it out to be sure it would serve the kids well. 100 yards on an antelope and 250 on a nice whitetail proved its usefulness. The kids have used it successfully as well. I still prefer my 308 but don’t mind the ol’ 243 at all.

My buddy built an AR-10 in .243. He was pretty surprised and disappointed to find out that from a 16" barrel his 95 grain bullets were going nearly the same velocity as 150 grainers from his 16" .308. What really surprised everyone was that my .338 Federal with an 18" barrel was pushing 185 grain bullets faster the .243 or .308. If you don't mind having a 24 inch barrel then maybe the .243 has its benefits. If you want a short barrel it's not the ideal cartridge, that's for sure.

Here 243 is used pro hunters who takes long shots like fox etc. But if i am correct it is not allowed to hunt whitetaildeer here. Deers are mostly taken with 6.5 Swede and 308 Win. That s about here but you get my point....

Love the 30-30 but admittedly it's weak sauce. 375 win is a good step up and in the right direction. I could live out the rest of my days with my lefty Ruger 308win scout rifle and one of my lefty 375's.

I’m really surprised you referred to a 30-30 as anemic. Statistically it has killed more deer in North America than any other cartridge. I’ve shot many a deer with my model 94 and nothing made its past 5 step stagger most dropped straight down. Now I do mainly hunt thick Pennsylvania Forrest with plenty of underbrush so everything is usually within bow range maybe one or two have been 50 yds. I absolutely love that gun one because it’s a family heirloom and two countless deer, Fox, coyotes, groundhogs, even a few black bear. I have other options in bolt guns with nice optics in .30-06, 308, 300winmag, 300WSM, 378 wthby Magnum, 375 H&H, 338LapuaMag., 270, 7mm mag. To name some of my favorite but unless I’m expecting going over 100 yards which will end up being 300-400 yards out west for big or dangerous game I always end up on my model 94 to put meat on the table. Even that depends if I have tags left after archery season. However game meat such as rabbit and squirrel which I like to turn into a tricky game with my guys and instead of posting up with my .22WM I like doing 300 yard head shots with none other than my .243!!!! Truly a great cartridge. People like to tease me and say stuff like “I remember my first youth model deer rifle, or do they even make that anymore?” Well I’m here to tell you yes they do and if you like carbine shooting or like dropping groundhogs at 400 yards and don’t wanna pay the insane price of a 22-250 just walk into almost any gun store that has a used section and take your pick of a .243 Woodstock or synthetic! They are making a comeback I just can’t believe it took this long!!!

100 grain Nosler Partitions or Speer Grand Slams loaded over a full case of hot sauce kills extremely well. The 100 grain bullets are almost a necessity in this little cartridge - and they will outperform the lighter bullets at long range all day long.
@north61
@north61 2 жыл бұрын
Try the 90 grain A-Bond it has virtually the same b.c. as the 100 grain Partition and better than the grand-slam and the 90 grainer can be loaded gaster/flatter and with the same type of energy levels, even at long range. All I used to use was the 100 grain Partition but the A-Bond is really good. Neither bullet has the same type of killing power especially on marginal hits as does a 150 or 165 grain bullet from a .308 however.

I have owned and used the 30-30, 243, 308, and 358 Winchester also. They have all worked well for me, within appropriate ranges for each, and I like them all, but not the 243 as well as the other 3. The 243 has worked well in my useage but I have watched it perform not as well in other people's hands. I personally would not use the 243 on game larger than pronghorn, whitetail, or mule deer, not if I had a choice. But I do know people who have used the 6mm extensively on antelope, deer, black bear, elk, and moose, multiples of each species, with no problems, but I personally would not do that.

Good morning!! Im a much bigger 358 fan.. but the lil 243 can run 55g up to 105 ish with its 1:10 bbl. I make a right turn and like the 6mm Rem in a proper action length. (Its too long for a true short action) 308 for me is like a 30/06 boringly reliable. Both are great reliable everyone has one, has had one and knows what they do. I like underdogs, uncommons and less liked. Cause I have learned many folks are fickle and THERE reasons for pupuing a given caliber rarely alighn with reality or mine. I have had three 243's and have no complaints but a 6mm offers improved ballistics across the bullet range. This is even extended by use in a longer action. Another great video man!! 🤟🏽♥️🤟🏽

@@north61 a friend of mine used a 6mm to hunt deer, antelope, bear, elk, and moose when he was young. Took many head of each species, never had a problem. Eventually he wanted a new rifle so he built himself a custom Remington 700 in 25-06 with a beautiful feathercrotch walnut stock. He proceeded to take many head of all the same species with his 25-06. It was his most favorite rifle to this day. He told me that he never really saw much difference in terminal effectiveness between the 25-06 and 6mm, both served him wonderfully, but then he surgically places his shots. He has used many other calibers also but said that 25-06 was his all time favorite. He is getting older though and suffering from health issues, like I am, and he told me that he passed his beloved 25-06 to his oldest son. He is presently using a Christensen arms rifle in 280 AI, that his second son gave him, to do what hunting he still can. He told me that he probably won't be hunting this year as he is scheduled for back surgery this month.

@@fedup3582 I guess it goes to show the importance of bullet placement. Heimo Korth went to Alaska with a 444 Marlin. He then moved all the way down to 22-250, and it's his caribou and moose rifle. Those little bullets in the right place do the trick but he is an exceptionally cool shooter.

Curious, what game were you hunting with the 30-30, and what bullet/ammo were you using? Asking because my experience with the 30-30 using hornady FTX ammo has been quite impressive on deer and antelope, knocking down game as well as and better than, cartridges such as the 308 and 270 WSM. I believe bullet used in each caliber makes a big difference, but I have been quite impressed with the FTX in the 30-30, the majority of the animals I took, falling in their tracks.

White-tail deer in Saskatchewan in 1974-76. This was pre-FTX. I used 170 grain factory bullets whatever was on sale. Penetration was great but wound channels pretty narrow. This was my Dad's only rifle for his whole life. With a good hit animals would usually run for 40-50 yards and then pile up. In thick tangles sometimes hard to find.

Agreed, I have taken large medium game with 243, but not further than 350 yards out. Shot placement is important. Normally closer, but not too close due to the speed. It is also great for smaller game with lighter bullets. I like the 308 for smaller large game under 350 yards. For Africa large antelope at close range 308 is great, but a bit of distance out the 300 win mag or 300 PRC are great options on large game at distances >350 yards.

I have been able to find lots of 375 even up here in the Yukon so I have no experience. I personally wouldn't as it's possible to reform 30-30 brass and use .375 bullets. Also starline makes brass if you look hard enough.

I would say the best choice is both. When I was younger I owned only 7 mags and would argue ballistics with a rock. Now I believe they all fit certain niches and situations. Every rifle and caliber has a particular application where it'll outshine all others. So.... the best gun is a safe full of them.
