Throughout the years I’ve bought (and still own) 24mm, 28mm, 35mm, 40mm, 50mm, and 85mm primes , as well as a 24mm - 120mm zoom, and I definitely know which I used the most and which I use the least. If I could only own one lens it would be the 35mm - but I wouldn’t be very happy. But if I could only own two it would be the 28mm and the 50mm. Those two as a team really can handle a lot of situations.

Can't agree with you more. I like variety but ultimately I try to only pair 2 lenses at a time.
@fritz98803 жыл бұрын
My favorite focal length is 28mm - I think that it's your favorite focal length too since you grabbed a Ricoh GR at the end. 28 mm takes in enough of the background to put your subject in it context, making for a better "story". 50 mm tends to isolate the subject, making your photo look like a page out of a field guide.

Thanks for the video. Over the decades, I have tried 21, 24, 28, 35, 40, 45, 50, and 55mm for one lens/one full-frame body street photography. All worked well. The 24, 35, and 50mm lenses work well alone or with others. Here are three three-lens kits that I like to use for street photography: 24/50/105 24/35/85 24/35/90

In my Canon days 50 & 85mm were my main tools and 35 was only accessory. It all changed with the X100 and 35mm became my favorite focal lens. Now I wanna try 24mm. Things change and your videos help so thank you Samuel!
@AB-lx8cf3 жыл бұрын
i shot leica for years loved the 50mm and the 28mm. the 35 was kinda this strange focal length that was either too wide or too tele if that makes sense. the 28 is amazing for close up street work and the 50 just seemed so natural and cinematic to me. 35 to me was the red headed step child in my family.

I am so glad to have come across this video! I recently bought a 35mm XC lens, and fell into that mistake of thinking it gave a 35mm focal length. However I actually really like the idea of finding better isolation in subjects with my 50mm focal length, and your examples of how to approach a scene really help

Your videos always make me happy! I found with the Ricoh that 9/10 times I would crop the image in post to around 35mm equivalent, so I use a 50mm and a 35mm for virtually all my work now.. As you noticed, the 16mm f/2.8 is much wider than the 18mm. But that is also because the 16mm f/2.8 actually is not 16mm, but closer to 15mm. I don't know why. But if you compare it with af full frame 24mm or even the Fujinon 16mm f/1.4, you can see it is wider. A bit strange. But this gives it a little more distortion.

I always felt that it was overly simplistic, but that said when Robert Capa said "if your pictures aren't good enough your not close enough" I don't think he would have suggested that one use a longer focal length . . . .
@paul89145 жыл бұрын
Were you back button focusing? You seemed to focus so fast. It still takes time to click the back button focus and then the shutter so I was surprised at how fast you focused. Also your exposure compensation seemed to change on It's own?!. How did you do that? Or are you just that fast at turning the exposure compensation wheel?

@juancatalan30955 жыл бұрын
It is worth to mention that even that you have a crop factor on apsc, that makes you look like if you are using a longer focal, you still have the distortion of the glasses that the lens is built. So even that it seem like a 24 mm lens, the distortion still from a 16mm lens... that it is not something that many tell...
@maspriyayi5 жыл бұрын
Rather than comparing angles of view from different images, you made it live. 23mm (normal) is versatile for traveling, but to take picture of building across the street/temples, 16mm (wide) is necessary. OK Samuel, 16mm for next Tokyo trip. Nice vid!

@bwc19764 жыл бұрын
This makes me want all three! (or a zoom with click-stops in between, if there was such a thing) But I can definitely see how 35 seems the most natural to me out of these, and why 40 was popular on old film rangefinders like the Canonet.

TBH, I pretty much live and die by 40mm and 70mm primes using either a KP for my APS-C body or a K1 for my Full Frame. I use a similar setup with a 20mm and 42.5mm Panasonic lens (40mm and 85mm equivalents) on my GX85 for my lightweight mirrorless kit. I'm on the edge of selling off some of my gear to pick up a Sony a7c to get a rangefinder style full frame. The Sony 40mm and 85mm are reasonably priced with pretty good results from what I've seen.
