13:30 you can tell someone has been turning wrenches for a while when they freeze as a tool or bolt falls. After dropping enough things you come to realize that you're not going to catch it and the best thing to do is to hold still and listen to see if you can determine exactly where it stops.

Not just dodge! I had to replace so many coolant quick connects on GM 6.5 back in day. Made of crap metal that would snap off moment you tried to remove them.The front ones were not to bad to drill and tap out then replace with barbs but man when the left back rear busted , such a pita . First few I removed intakes to drill , then about the 4th one (done about 150 total in SC working for Bellsouth) I learned to do it without removal but still such a pita. working flat rate I did make some damn good money on 6.5's and up to 95 G van 30 min dash heater cores.

We mounted the lift pump and fuel filters on the frame rail and installed a fuel pressure gauge. We’ve been able to monitor lift pump performance and change it out before damage occurred to the VP44.
@mannypuerta5086
@mannypuerta5086 5 ай бұрын
A couple of side notes for those who may attempt this… The Woodruff key is matched with the pump for timing purposes. Do not lose the key that came with the new pump. If the tappet cover is leaking, now is the time to replace the gasket, or better yet, get a billet cover with o-rings if you plan on keeping the truck for any length of time. Those gaskets on the original tappet cover will harden and leak. You don’t want to pull the VP44 again to fix the leak. Those stock, Carter lift pumps are pretty poor quality. FASS makes a high quality, direct replacement pump. They also make a remote pump/air separation system that mounts by the fuel tank, which is the best solution. Those VP44’s are really sensitive to low lift pump pressure, so having a fuel pressure gauge on the A-pillar is almost required to save the VP44 when the cheap Carter lift pump fuel pressure approaches 5 PSI (more is better). I run Diesel Kleene with each fill up to help the VP44 last with today’s low sulphur fuels. FWIW…

Communication problems with non-experienced people inside the car can lead to injuries... Me and my mate had to push-start his car once, while his girlfriend was at the wheel. We told her to let the clutch out when we gave her a sign, as we signalled her to do so, she simply turned the key, what weakened the battery even more. The second attempt after we told her the procedure again, she left out the clutch that hard, that my mate slipped off of the rear left fender, where he was pushing,running alongside of the car and I hit my knee on the rear bumper, because the car stood still immediatly in first gear, although we told her to use 2nd gear... So much for communication in such situations... :-D Thx for showing us another interesting job! :-D

As it turned out the service department manager was a friend of mine from high school. Like you he said they were having to replace a lot of the pumps. He placed the blame on the new low and zero sulfur fuel. Who knows?? But in my 53 years of driving, it's the only vehicle I wish I had never sold. 2000, Cummins dually,

The lift pumps were garbage on the vp44. Most of the time barely made enough pressure and eventually took out the injection pump. That’s the reason everyone goes with a fass or air dog. The rule of thumb was a minimum of 10 psi of fuel while driving. That supplied the proper pressure and also was enough to pop open the return line spring so you could circulate fuel and keep the injection pump cool

The male end on the fuel fitting to the low pressure pump looks like an SAE J2044. Several companies make mating female line end - all go on easy but can be a pain without the removal tool to get them off as you have found out. They are popular since they only need one hand to make the connection and can be verified either with a tug - the style you are working with - on a assurance feature that either acts as a secondary lock or just an indicator.

I've owned dodges with the Ve, P, and Vp and common rail. Agree the Vp ones are more problematic but just two things will keep them happy and running, one is they don't like to pull their own fuel from the taknk so keep them feed, second is keeping them cool so I always try and keep the tank at least half full in the hot summer days. Fuel pressure gauge and a working fuel gauge has kept me from ever replacing a Vp 44. Knock on wood I probably just opened the door for Murphy to show his head.

Interesting note, I got 14 years out of my original equipment batteries on my 2004.5 Dodge/Cummins, close to 300,000 miles. Finally one gave out and I put in a Walmart “Value Power” battery and drove it another couple years before I was forced by COVID disaster to sell the truck. Thinking back I can’t remember if I ever removed the battery cables a single time in those 14 years. Super reliable vehicle, I truly miss her every day….

The working areas are all very, very clean and unbelievably good organized. Places/shops like this are extremely rare and I hope that they don't have the usual problems to find expert employees. Thanks a lot for making teaching explaining recording editing uploading and sharing. Best regards luck and health to all of you (including the great critter/rodent detector of course).
