Edward Burne-Jones is sometimes called the last Pre-Raphaelite but although his work represents the medieval period of myth and legend he uniquely creates a timeless dream-world knights, lovers and femme fatale.
An affair with Maria Zambuco became public and created a scandal so that he received few commissions during the 1870s but in the 1880s his reputation grew and he became one of the most famous international artists in the latter part of his life.
His reputation declined towards the end of his life and did not recover until the 1990s. His work is essentially Victorian but is now seen as an important stepping stone to twentieth century art in terms of its influence on international Symbolism, and as a stepping stone to the deeper psychological and sexual insights of the twentieth century.
