Hey guys, I’ve been seeing a lot of comments about Tea & Moonshine here because of way number 53. I honestly didn’t know what you guys were talking about until I looked it up. Somehow, my dumb ass forgot the name of the hilarious show. Sorry for any confusion I may have left you guys in the comments saying I didn’t watch it.

Super. I am guilty of a few, like pulling the wheels off of one locomotive to make another locomotive operational, or dragging the derailed car till it hits a rerailer or switch. I also have eight different couplers in use on my model railroad. Kadee knuckle, X2f hornhook, and radial versions of both couplers, Maerklin Relex, Mantua loop, Proto 2000, and Link and Pin couplers, along with a few scale dummy knuckle couplers for show. Hello from the Tracy Mountain Railway in Colorado. 💙 T.E.N.

Bro, why the fRIcK do you have eight types of couplers-
@tracynation28205 күн бұрын
I also have a crane car and a boom tender that have the European screw couplers mounted on each end, so, including the dummy couplers, that makes for ten different types of couplers in use on my HO pike. The trolley line uses radial Kadee Knuckle and radial X2f Hornhook couplers (ever seen those?) that I bought around forty to fifty years ago, while older rolling stock came with The Mantua Loop, Maerklin Relex, or X2f Hornhook couplers, which all operate just fine, and it just isn't worth my time or the expense to replace or upgrade a system that already functions quite well. The Link and Pin couplers I added to my logging branch locomotives and rolling stock myself, and my more modern main line models come equipped with various brands of knuckle couplers. All replacements for any broken or missing couplers are Kadee Knuckle types, but a fleet of coupler conversion cars and Ten different types of couplers, only five of which will couple together, (The Mantua Loop and the Maerklin Relex will couple together automatically, and the Proto 2000s will couple to knuckle or hornhook couplers.) make for some interesting logistics and operation. Even if I was rich, I wouldn't replace hundreds of couplers that are fully operational, plus this offers more "play" value, as well as allowing me to operate any rolling stock I purchase without any modifications before putting it on the rails. No matter which brand, or what countries rolling stock or locomotives I buy, they will fit right in on my railroad, and although I try to model North American trains, I occasionally operate some "foreign" trains that I really just had to purchase because they were awesome models. 💙 T.E.N.

@ man, you’ve got quite a lot of lore behind your railroad. I hope you’re able to store all that stuff easily.

I try to keep everything on live functioning track, if I can. My layout isn't very big, but I have one wall with live track display shelves (15) that are connected with switchbacks, extending out beyond the shelf's edge, and going up or down between each shelf, utilizing 10% grades with a spur coming from a wye on my layout connecting to the sixth highest shelf, which also has the only passing siding on the entire wall. Each shelf is a 10' long 1"×6" mounted to the wall and painted the same white as the wall, which really makes the models stand out, and has two tracks. (One and a half storage, one half switchback or storage.) Just operating that part is interesting, as my "fiddle yard," or vertical staging tracks require two large diesels locomotives (For now, an EMD SD45 + a GE U33C.) to pull a three to four car train up or down the switchbacks. The only problem is the "scale time" required to retrieve or park something without using the "0-5-0" hand switcher, and also, 10' long shelves won't let me display some of my longer passenger trains unless they are on two or three different shelves. The Burlington Zephyr, the Union Pacific M-10,000, and my commuter trains fit pretty well, but my 18 car heavyweight B&O Royal Blue express passenger train is 22' long with two heavy 4-6-2 Pacific steam locomotives, or almost 24' long with five EMD F7 units, so for display, in order to see the whole train, it takes three shelves, plus removal of anything else in the way, but storage alone only takes two fairly full shelves. This wall was made before DCC, and is still fully wired for DC control. (And DCC now.) For track section power control, there are 68 electrical switches and two power indicator light bulbs. (One master off.) Including three on the layout wye switches to connect to the display shelves, there are 59 turnouts on the shelves alone. (all salvaged, mostly free Atlas, Tyco, and AHM left, right, three way, single & double slip Switches + flex track. I got lots of free used track. Lucky me.) and 60 turnout control switches. (One master off.) Most of the track and electrical was bought used, or salvaged, or scrounged, and it only cost me about $180.°° for everything except the lumber, hardware, time, wire, and paint. The control panel is 15" × 24" and is just a piece of plastic, with 15 drawn shelves and track plan, and 132 miniature switches, screwed to the end of my layout, with two power on light bulbs, (So you know what is turned on.) having two MRC 2400 powerpacks which mostly are only used for the turnout and signal controls now, unless I feel DC motivated. Sounds horrible, but everything was easy, one piece at a time. Easy powered storage. Nowadays, $180.°° would barely buy one decent HO locomotive. 💙 T.E.N.
