I don't care how rare they are with all of this money that they are just basically handing out why don't they feed the homeless the sick he dying babies even animals something that is more valuable then all of these things.. then they can say which brag is not an idea. but if they want to spend your money on something that would be more valuable impressions that they could ever buy.. save a life

The Crown of Thorns wasn't bought. You can't buy religious items of such ilk - even parts of saints' bodies can't be sold, only given. The Crown was owned by the ruler of Constantinople at the time it ended up in France (sorry, I can't remember names and dates - it's early morning. IIRC, the French king was one of the early-middling Louis ;-)) He needed military and financial help to protect the city. Louis sent that money in "livres" - the coinage of the day, and (I am 99% certain. Feel free to correct me - about anything! - if you know better) where the British pound gets its name from. The amount of money sent was either the equivalent of half or the whole of France's GDP for a year. Basically, Louis sent everything required, and as a symbol of gratitude, the Crown was sent to him in Paris as a gift. The chapel in which it was held (I believe it's been moved but I stand to be corrected. I watched a documentary on reliquaries and the chapel was visited. You can go inside it and if you're in Paris, I thoroughly recommend it) was specifically built to be a reliquary of sorts. The walls are full of stained glass, telling the story of the Crown, including the scene of Louis and his brother carrying it in its protective case on their shoulders using long sticks to hold it. They were both dressed plainly and barefoot to show their humbleness before God. Over time, as gifts to rulers of other Christian countries, particularly those he wanted to keep on his side or as gratitude for something, and to certain nobles and other well-connected people, he would break off one of the thorns. Hence its sparseness of thorns, at least more sparse than one would expect. These thorns would end up in their own small, but stunning reliquaries of extremely expensive materials made by the greatest goldsmiths and jewellers of their time. Even for an atheist, particularly if you're into art history, it's a fascinating story.
