Also to mention, the word "cjepidlaka", or "cjepidlačiti" has its own meaning and means "to nitpick". You can say for example to a friend, who is constantly overanalyzing ("nemoj cjepidlačiti o tome" = lit. don't nitpick over this) or if someone is looking way to detailed into something ("Ne volim cjepidlačiti, ali kasnite već 2 tjedna." = lit. i don't want to nitpick, but you are already two weeks late)

I used to regularly cross the border between Croatia and Hungary at a village called Gola (which means naked). For a long time I thought it was called Gola Gola (so good they named it twice) but the road signs actually say "Gola Golá" the second word being the Hungarian spelling.

Krivi put area is very fruitful with funny toponyms. For example, on other side of Senj there's a peak named Kurčev vrh (for obvious reasons), also if you go to Vratnik, you'll find Pizdolinova jaruga. My mate's family is from there 😂 And since you mentioned Komiža, you MUST have heard of Pizdica. That is one of if not only water well near Komiža (or on Biševo, I'm not 100% sure). @@PaulBradbury The lakes were created when people, who were digging for gravel, found a water source. It's a pretty nice place, very important for the local community too. During summer a lot of people come here with their families to have fun and relax in the beautiful clean waters of the lake. The nearby place Molve is also beautiful and there's a urban legend that the church that was built there was suppose to be built in Bjelovar but the architect ,that was involved in building both churches, fell in love with a Molvarka and switched the building plans.

Cug *is* a train in my kajkavian dialect, because it's the transliteration of the German word Zug, which means train. What does a German word have to do with it? Kajkavian part of Croatia used the German language, which was one of the official languages of the Austro-Hungarian empire, to oppose and undermine Hungarization which then-viceroy, Khuen-Héderváry tried to impose on Croats. Speaking German was therefore an effective measure of opposition. So for example, we say "cukr", from the German word Zucker (sugar), or "isscajg" from the German "Isszeug" (eating utensils), or you'll often hear us use the word "beštek", from the German word "Besteck" (silverware).

Cug is actually German Zug for train. North Croatia is filled with German words turned into Croatian. Mz relatives from that area especially older ones wil say ambrelo for kišobran which comes from umbrella, špiglo for mirror with comes from Spiegel, badencimer for bathroom wich is actually Baden Zimmer. They woul say cipelcug for walking, cipel is short for cipele, we have špancirfest in same region, which comes from German words for walking and to celebrate something. There was a place pičkovac which got its name during ww2. Ladies in certain houses were entertaining men from all armies and groups had a nice time and did not chase each others so place was spared from brutality. Only thing was there were certain number of newborns who growing up obviously had German and Croatian roots, coz women daily served Germans, partisans and domobrans. In modern time it is more like legend and no one is sure did it really happened or is it just made up story.knowing Croatian history i believe it did happen in past. Vukojebina actually is a term for a place which even God forgotten, pripizdina is a term in conversation as a backward place far away, like I came from pripizdina barely found way out, or I can't wait to get out from this vukojebina...

When I was 10, my parents sent me packing from New York to Ugljan Island (near Zadar) for an entire summer. I stayed with my cousins and my language skills were terrible. I somehow managed to get by, until one day my aunt asked me what I wanted for lunch. Since I was missing America (and wasn't home for July 4th celebrations), I asked for a hot dog. Unfortunately, I didn't know the proper words so I tried the literal translation of "hot dog" as "vruci pas". My aunt and uncle looked at me, horrified, wondering what my parents were feeding me. "Upper hear splitter lower hear splitter- you can choose to split your hair large or small."..you get me here- eyes wide open- what does it mean? PS Cjepidlaka can also mean- giving injections to the hair- CIJEPITI- do not necessarily means ODCJEPITI, Pocjepati- whats basically really layered wordplay considering Vaxing (Vaccination) Cjepiti Dlake- its one of my faweret disciplines....and you are NOTICED- Big or Small- you say? Not upper or down, no? Kurba Vela and Kurba mala- as well as other islands, are named by their impact on the ship. Kurba was difficult...babin Prdac also names the straight of the wind on a particular part of Kornati (those islands were dangerous to ships and sailors) . I advise you to inform yourself on Kevina Jama and Babino Vrelo- ...looks like you are in it...- and you need to have SANITARNA ISAZNICA to be there . I hope ain't worst than that when we come to Babin prdac...- behind names of Kornati is much more Historical VISDOM and geological descriptions of what you say- skipping over Love island with- a child -as if was a joke- producer....When we say casa (cess) you say pool...

I am saying worst than that on Babin Prdac- as it can be- after Kornaty Tragedy it was pretty obvious - there are some gas- or another easy flammable element under Kornati- and all that what they knew about locations - before Franjo Josip- they did map by naming the islands... Damir Milos in his book Kornati Travels also gives a glimpse of that pre- 2WW concentration campsa= knowledge (big bubbles of "air" travelling out of the water)- presumably that can be that grandma ass...."You have Katina in Poland, you have Katina on there- the second 2 island next to grandma's ass is - "nursery school "island, and "City alone" island- I don't know...._ i read bit of mapping of El Shatt history on there
